Yall must've had a helluva antenna!Jim, Woody Assaf, and Dick Rice... the trinity of MS weather in the 70s,80s and early 90s
I grew up watching Jim, he was on seemingly all day long. He was on the early morning show, he was then on Midday, and then he was on at 6:00 and 10:00. I don't know when he wasn't on. When they needed him he would read the news tooMan, this all really makes me miss Jim Gibbon
I could get Jim and Woody because of where I lived kind of in between them and was then introduced to Dick Rice when I came to MSU. I was amazed when I moved back to Starkville 30 years later he was still doing the WTVA weather AND that Buddy & Kay Bain were still on. Well I think Buddy was dead by then but Kay was still carrying on. She's still alive now but Buddy died in 1997Yall must've had a helluva antenna!
Understood. And for the record what you do is really cool.He and Gabe have left WTVA and have started their own 24 hour weather site on YouTube at Mississippi Live Weather. He will start with a primary focus on the northern half of the state and then, as he able, expand to the rest of the state.
I didn’t ask wrap it. Arnept made a claim “Allen is about to see what happens when they 17 around with local meteorologists”.Wrapit literally answered your question. Allen is barely solvent as it is. When they tried to cut their local mets before, there was a huge backlash. There's no path forward for them if they can't find a buyer, and that path is much shorter when they run off their viewers who, as arnept said, only watch the news for the weather.
Pro tip. If you are planning an outdoor event and you need perfect weather, go to the local Guard or Reserve base/station/armory and ask them for their upcoming drill/UTA schedule. Guaranteed that the nicest weekend that month will be the dates on that schedule.Dave Brown up in Memphis one year, maybe in the Fall, predicted a precipitation free day on the day his daughter was to be wed. Rained that day and affected the wedding. Man drove up to the station, walked right in and punched ole Dave in the nose for missing the forecast. True story, well sorta……

Special Report: The time Dave Brown got punched in the face
It's a story as legendary as the man himself – the time Action News 5 Meteorologist Dave Brown got punched in the face. Besides questions about the weather, Brown says more people ask him about that incident than any other question. Now, after 36 years, he is ready to set the record straight.www.actionnews5.com
We are not funded by him or anyone else. As a 501(c)3 we operate entirely off of donations, sponsorships, and Facebook monetization. How much we're able to do is solely dependent on the generosity of others.I am guessing he will eventually make more money being on his own because he gets 100% of all funds. Additionally, he will have significantly less overhead. I would think this brings more funding for the Mississippi Storm chasers.
I literally explained it. Matt is beloved in NE MS and people revolted to get his job back. He has a fierce community backing, as do many local chief meteorologists in one market cities.I didn’t ask wrap it. Arnept made a claim “Allen is about to see what happens when they 17 around with local meteorologists”.
Like wtf. Is the entire north ms area about to stop watching wtva? No.
SameI could get Jim and Woody because of where I lived kind of in between them and was then introduced to Dick Rice when I came to MSU.
YesIs this the same Byron Allen that used to be on that 80's show Real People?
I was talking about being on his app and him giving them a big shout out on his first show should draw more donations and sponsorships. We are not funded by him or anyone else. And according to some reports, 90 days delinquent on debt service. The future is uncertain. For what it's worth, from Wikipedia (Allen does own The Weather Channel, so in the difficult environment of local news I can understand efforts to cut costs)...
"In January 2025, Allen Media Group announced plans to have local weather coverage on its sister Allen Media Broadcasting television stations be centralized from TWC and its Atlanta studios, including use of its meteorologists and forecasting technology. AMG argued that this change would "dramatically improve reporting capabilities, especially in high-stakes weather situations" and provide "additional visual storytelling capabilities". The change will result in planned layoffs of meteorologists from stations across 21 media markets, with some being reassigned to work from Atlanta. AMG's announcement faced criticism over how it would impact severe weather coverage, along with the plan to lay off meteorologists with strong connections to their respective communities. WBMA chief meteorologist James Spann stated that he "hate[d] that so many colleagues are involved in this", but admitted that "media consumption is radically different now, and we have to change how our products and services reach you".[36][37] On January 23, 2025, it was reported that AMG had elected to maintain some of its local meteorologists instead, citing feedback and criticism over the announcement.[38][39]"
Don’t be dissin on my boy Johnny DPoor old John will be clogging up your tv now
You young 17'ers don't even remember Don Buser on WTVA before Dick Rice. He predicted snow every damned time it got cold in the late 70's & early 80's.Jim, Woody Assaf, and Dick Rice... the trinity of MS weather in the 70s,80s and early 90s
No. I switched to channel 9 to see if Matt was on. If he wasn’t , then I looked online. Matt was so far ahead of online weather alerts that it wasn’t even funny.Everyone in the post and up in NE Mississippi looks at their phone for weather alerts first.
Well, I'm 60 and get my weather exclusively from the written forecasts/radar on Weather Underground. I have no idea where they get their info from and don't care.your weather is being presented by a guy who has never even stepped foot in the state of MS and is broadcasting from 6+ hours away. That's what Allen's end goal is. It saves a buck for them.

You have to realize you are debating a full blooded troll. He is good at it. He had me fooled for a long time.... no longer.I literally explained it. Will WTVA go out of business? Probably not, and I hope they don't. But Matt would have never started this new gig if he thought his job was secure.
Matt is a bigger brand than WTVA and has been for years. Whoever replaces him is a downgrade, no matter how you put it. Residents don't have the connection to the new person, and with Matt directly competing with WTVA now, he will take many viewers away from WTVA.
Viewers = money. Leas viewers = less money.
Let me know if you need me to dumb it down even more.
Well, since WTVA under Matt was always ahead of everyone else and they had a great phone app, yeah I looked at my phone first. Now I will look at Matt's app.No. I switched to channel 9 to see if Matt was on. If he wasn’t , then I looked online. Matt was so far ahead of online weather alerts that it wasn’t even funny.
Nah I just like people to be direct and to the point. You have to realize you are debating a full blooded troll. He is good at it. He had me fooled for a long time.... no longer.
