So what are Mullen and Crew doing different with 2015 class than 2014? ...

That would be the most likely explanation. And it's about damn time.

What it looks like from an outsider is that they have given up on 2014.

You can barely put any stock into recruiting rankings in dec/jan of current year. I am not sure what it a commit really means when it is over a year out from signing day. I guess the plan is to try to get on guys early and hope they are loyal b/c of it.

What's the reason for the uptick in quality early commits?

The answer is: Tim Brewster.

He he told us we had to start getting on kids earlier. We have basically been recruiting the 2015 class as long as the 2014. We are basically a year ahead of schedule compared to Mullen's first couple years.

We also have some inroads to kids in 2015 in state too, but several if those haven't even paid off yet.

Answer 1b is the fact that Mississippi is producing some absolute freaks for 2015. More than usual. I think both schools have been scouting those guys more so than a lot of 2014 prospects for quite a while now.

I'm ok with spending this class on depth. Get some quality depth and future junior/senior starters out of this class, get your start first year starters the year after. Oline is just now starting to fix itself. Every other year we need to grab a line class like this one.
