So why does Jon Gruden's name come up for every college vacancy?

he's young, passionate, a bonafide big name, proven winner, seems to have the personality to recruit well, and has a 17'ing superbowl ring to flash to the recruits. I think he'd be an awesome college coach.
You don't get mentioned on a regular basis unless there is some reason these schools think he might be interested. Makes me think that an agent or somebody is throwing his name out there. Maybe just for publicity, I don't know. But you don't hear Bill Cowher, Tony Dungy or Mike Leach get seriously mentioned on a continuous basis. Those are probably bad examples but are the first ones that popped into my head. You get the point.
And everytime UT would talk about firing Phil Fulmer, or after Lane Kiffen left, his name would come up as a possible replacement.
The only time I can ever recall his name coming up in a college vacancy has either been UT or Miami, and UT has had two coaching searches the last two years, so it probably does seem like his name comes up all the time.

Because he went to college there, and is a legend there. I don't know if anyone has the balls to hire Mike Leach, but I would if I was UL-Lafayette. He would dominate the Sun Belt. I can't see Cowher as a good college coach, but then again, I didn't think Mike Sherman would be any good either.
The whole key to hiring a NFL coach is to make sure that you hire someone like Ed Orgeron that knows how to recruit. That's a big reason why Pete Carroll was so successful at USC. That's also where we screwed up with Croom, other than well, hiring him.
Personally, of all of the NFL coaches out there currently coaching, the three that I think would be the most successful would be Sean Payton, Rex Ryan, and Tom Coughlin. Pete Carroll would be attractive, but he also has a lot of baggage now. I think Jason Garrett would be really good too, but I think he wants to stay in the NFL.
