Blatter has always been an idiot, but this may be the worst of his ideas yet. I wonder if you would get any points if you lose in the shootout (NHL system)

BUY on the golden goal. I see no reason not to do this. How often does a team score on a possession after an opening kick off? There's nothing unfair about a golden goal the way NFL OT is unfair. Let the team with the most corners have kick off in OT or something like that to give the most offensive-minded squad what little advantage you get in having kick off.

Golden Goal does need to come back, although I would take "silver goal" (if someone scores, you finish the 15 min OT period you are in). Overtime in the world cup usually ended up with 2 really tired teams walking up and down the field not doing too much because they were afraid of conceding. I have always been a proponent of allowing a 4th sub if you go to OT as well

It was done away with because it produces a more defensive overtime, where teams are scared of the golden goal instead of going for it. As for PKs in group matches, that's just stupid. PKs are a last resort. There is nothing wrong with draws in group matches.

Also buy on going straight to PKs in the group stage. They should give 3 points for a regulation win, 2 for a PK win, and 1 for a PK loss. They should also make head-to-head the first tiebreaker. This would reduce ties at the end of the group stage and almost eliminate goal differential as a tiebreaker, except in the case of 3-way ties. I don't like having who beat the worst team in the group the worst determining who advances and who doesn't. I also like the idea of a 4th sub in OT that someone else posted.

Holy crap, this is an awful idea.<div>
</div><div>"He wants to put an end to defence-minded teams playing to get a draw."</div><div>
</div><div>OK. Now they'll just play a defence-minded game in hopes of getting to a PK shootout, where they could be rewarded with 3 points instead of 1. This is just awful.</div><div>
</div><div>
</div><div>And bringing back golden goal? Sell for the same reason 1984Dawg gave.</div>

"We ended up looking at a proposal to merely shift the penalty shoot-out
to BEFORE extra-time, with the winner of the shoot-out taking the
contest only if the subsequent extra-time remains level. Such a change
would induce the team that lost the shoot-out to attack since they have
to score to win. If they succeed, then the other team also has to score
to tie the extra-time, putting them back in the winning position."
