Soccer Post - Gooch makes noble gesture: will play for no pay after injury

This is pretty darn cool - and a noble gesture on Gooch's part. After being injured and not playing for AC Milan all season, he's asked for a one-year contract extension with no pay. I don't doubt his sincerity at all, but this is also just great PR for him. I'm sure the fans of AC Milan will embrace him in a big way (and so will some sponsors) since its antithetical of major sports stars today.

Could also hurt him down the road if Milan signs some new defenders and he isn't getting playing time. They won't feel like he has to be sold mid season since he isn't costing them a thing to sit on the bench. Great PR move, but maybe not the best career move</p>
