they sold it to someone who decided to only show the game via closed-circuit TV. It's on at some bars, but that's about it.

The final qualifying game on Wednesday will be a must-win or draw vs Costa Rica. If we win or draw, we're in - barely. If we lose, we will have to play the "play-in" game against a South American team. Luckily, the game is at home in DC, and we play well at home. Unfortunately, the World Cup is not at home, and I'm convinced at this point that we will qualify, go to South Africa, and get drilled.

We have to win this. Costa Rica is up 2-0. Mexico has already clinched 1 out of 3.5 spots (0.5 spot being playoff between CONCAF 4th placed team and S. American 5th placed team). If we don't win this, it'll come to US v CR in the last game.

We don't want to leave it to until the last game to qualify. I don't want us in a playoff vs S. America's 5th placed team..that'll suck donkey balls.

it shouldn't be tied b/c Honduras looked onside on the goal called back. Great goal to make it 3-2 as well. Nail biter now.

Well done on the road.

Now we've got to figure out how to capture those performances from the Confed Cup and bottle them and take them over there.

I pray that we don't end up in one of those group of deaths.

We need to play different people from now to WC to get an idea of the final team composition.

I went to the only place showing the game in Alabama. I was the only white guy there. There were two fat white chicks there though.

Great game. The US caught a break on the missed PK, but the second goal for Honduras shouldn't have counted because of a missed offside call before Howard was even pulled out of the net. The goal that was called back was a good call, the guy who scored was a step ahead of the ball.

We won and we are in our sixth straight World Cup. Two of the previous five, we've advanced out of the first round. One of those, we've made the final eight. The countdown to the December draw begins...(I'm assuming that is when it is).

That quarter final game vs Germany in 2002 is one of the lowest I've felt as a sports fan. To this day, I want to kick that referee in his 'nads for denying us that goal. First, it crossed the goal line. Even if it did not (IT DID!), the 17in German player handled it..it should have been a PK at the worst. Dammit, BYU game quality refs in WC annoy me!

Soccer fans, see it for yourself (3-4 minute mark in the below video) and then blast me for bringing this memory back. But damn, what a game we played that day!

If they do the draw like they have done, we'll be in another strong group. For WC 2006 info, go here. They'll put teams in "pots" to keep the best teams apart but also to vary the groups geographically as much as possible. It all depends on what other continental zone they throw in with ours. Last time, it was Asia, which forced us into a group with one of the top 8 (a given), a European team, and either an African or South American team. That all but guaranteed we'd be drawn into a tough group. The two weakest zones were in the same "pot" and we happen to be in one of them. Until we get seeded in the top 8, we can probably count on this happening.

the group. That is the only way we'll even be considered for it.

Regardless, there isn't going to be an easy group. Going into WC2002, our group appeared to be a tough one. We had a home team and Portugal which failed to live up to hype. However, prior to the tournament, it appeared to be a tough group.

In 2006, we were in the Group of Death, by many people's accounts. It was nice to be considered one of the better teams that helped make that the GoD instead of the fourth team that just happened to be in with three good teams. We all know how that ended.

I'm hoping we can win Wednesday (it is at home, so we should, although CR will be playing to avoid the playoff). I don't know what the schedule looks like prior to December (when they normally hold the draws) but I would be nice to get a few friendlies in and hopefully improve our standings. There was talk of us possibly being seeded last time around but it didn't happen. Maybe it can this time.

FIFA hasn't yet announced how they are going to calculate the seedings for the 2010 World Cup. But if they go by the seeding calculations they used for the last 3 World Cup seeding system (2006, 2002, 1998) we have almost no chance of getting a top 8 seed, thanks to the turd we laid in 2006. Also, our Dec 2008 and Dec 2007 rankings were 22 and 19 respectively. We are currently ranked #11..assuming we rise upto #9 or even #8 in Nov 2009 rankings and teams currently ahead of us (Russia, France, Croatia, Argentina) fail to qualify as per scenarios given below, we still have a tough shot at being seeded in the top 8.

Rankings

Russia and France lose in the European playoffs
Croatia (out of even a playoff spot unless Ukraine lays a turd vs Andorra)
Argentina (clinging onto the last automatic spot in S. America...have 1 pt more than Uruguay and needs a draw in their final game @ Uruguay to clinch. No easy task)

South Africa as a host takes up one of the 8 seeds which I think is horseshit. The same happened to S. Korea and Japan..they got 2 of the top 8 seeds. As a host nation, you get an automatic qualification and you get to HOST the damn World Cup...that should be more than enough. Giving a seed (or two, in 2002) to teams ranked in 60s and 70s is ridiculous.

Anyway we will get to know our fate on Dec 4 when the draw takes place in Cape Town (Link)

Oh, if you thought NCAA was run by a bunch of cronies, get this: The FIFA decided to seed the 8 European teams in the playoffs just when 2 games remained for the conclusion of the qualification games so that they could protect the bigger teams like France, Portugal, etc....not at the draw of the qualification groups, not even a game or two into the qualification games but 2 games before the conclusion of the qualification. (Link)

PS: I just hope that some team keeps that POS Christiano Ronaldo out of this World Cup by knocking out Portugal in the playoffs (Portugal needs to win their final game vs Malta to secure playoff spot).

PPS: I just noticed that ESPN has done a story recently about the US' unlikely chances of being seeded. (Link)

You always hear stories about that stuff being done "under the table" and you have people who are conspiracy theorists...but damn...that is right there in the open. They aren't even attempting to hide it. Have they given a reason "for" doing it? It seems too obvious to me!

but just now decide to do it that way is ridiculous. Like the Ireland goalkeeper said, that should have been decided before qualification started.

Clearly, Given is correct. There is no way around that! They are protecting the "big boys."

Hopefully, enough hell is raised about this that they have to pick the method before play begins.

The procedure for the draw for the play-offs in the European zone, scheduled for 19 October in Zurich, [has been] approved. Teams will be seeded on the basis of the next FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, which will be published on 16 October.
Just one damn sentence..that's all. It is blatantly obvious that money is the root of all this. I totally agree with you, patdog and millions of others in that I wouldn't have had a problem if they had laid the rules before the qualifications started.

Couple of articles blasting FIFA for this: SI, Goal

The articles were written before yesterday's qualification games. BBC Sport has a nice breakdown on up to date European qualification scenarios (Link)
