Probably the biggest game the US has played since the World Cup and it's on the pay/sports package channels and not a national network. Meanwhile, 100% of the 50k televisions in Mexico are watching, not to mention the game being played in the Rose Bowl, but it sounds like Mexico City.

Here goes little Rob,

We haven't
won a World Cup, ever! We wonder why more of our better athletes do not
play soccer. Supposedly USA is trying to make a push to make the sport
more appealing to younger kids. They have been doing a lot of work and
advertising the past few years to try to build up USA soccer. They have
created multiple, highly competitive SOCCER training facilities around
the US, where the top kids go. They have schools, dorms, etc, and are
designed to help develop our better soccer players.

Most of our
youth are only exposed to the major sports, football, baseball, and
basketball. They are not exposed to soccer on regular television as a
child. Had this game been on a regular channel, some 5 year old with
Pele type potential could have seen it and said, "Hey, I'd rather play
soccer than football, baseball, or basketball".

making me waste 3 minutes and 56 seconds of my life elaborating on my
previous post. You should get off the couch and get out more.

The gold cup winner goes on to play in the confederations cup at the site of the world cup a year prior to the WC.

You know that thing we placed 2nd in to Brazil in 2009 and whipped Spain's ***(and should've won the damn thing)? Sure it's not the world cup but it's a pretty big deal.

exaggerating a bit but that IS how those two competitions are looked on in the wider football world. The Confederations Cup especially is regularly mentioned as a totally meaningless competition (which it is)that should be done away with. European club managers have pushed for years to quit having to release players to what they call a minor competition, the Gold Cup. The only reason that it hasn't happened is really that there are so few players that play over there involved.

its not a big deal in Asian or Europe or South America, but it's a pretty big deal in CONCACAF. European managers don't like releasing players, period. Whether it's for Copa America, WC qualifying, or whatever.

your mind the only tourney that matters is the WC? Tell that to Copa fans. I can guarantee you they care about the Copa.

European Championships and as you mention the Copa. Then there are MANY club competitions that are more prestigious than the Gold Cup, MANY.

Clearly all the training together, tourneys, qualification games, and friendlies are meaningless. I think the way to get the team ready for 2014 is by only having them together in training after the European season is done in 2014. The time together and the meaningful games are key to the team's success in 2014.

Of course club managers are going to be upset that their players are adding mileage to their bodies during the off-season. All the club managers care about is the good of the club. Do you think Liverpool was happy when Torres was forced into action in the WC coming off of that knee injury?

Winning the Gold Cup would have been a good sign of the times. Sure, the copy boy forgot to email this story to the editor at Sport, but it otherwise carried a whiff of notoriety. Maybe only a few pubs carried the game, I don't know. But it showcased our weaknesses and proved once more how we could cater to a larger stage.<div>

not a fan of the international game in general. I've seen to many players lost to their club during bogus international comps or friendlies. I'm mainly a fan of the club game, esp in England.

i mean you aren't becoming a world power because you win a few gold cups, but i'd rather win them than lose them. the gold cup just showed how far ahead of us mexico is right now with under 25 talent. bradley needs to play young guys and only play a select few of the guys who will be 30+ by the next world cup.

soccer is my 2nd favorite sport to watch behind football these days. i really didn't start paying much/any attention outside of the world cupoccasionallyuntil about 4 years ago, and since then it's really come on strong for me.

Try getting someone from another continent (who doesn't know the rules or strategy)to enjoy a 10-7 football game.
