Once every four years where so many fans in the United States pretend they care about soccer for a while.

Whoa... I think times have changed. I do think people pay special attention to the WC but USA's qualifiers had great viewership. Average American cares more about soccer then they ever have.

not the AVERAGE American, just the illegal immigrants. And if I were in charge, I'd have the USA'S head coach fired for saying "we don't have a chance". NEVER should a HC say that despite the odds.

Go back to your trailer, 17ing bum. Illegal immigrant?

I don't disagree that a coach should never say those things, but under Klinsmann's leadership we've beaten several European juggernauts, won a ridiculous amount of games, and moved up 20+ spots in the FIFA ranking. If you genuinely think he should be fired, you don't deserve to be in this conversation.

Soccer isn't about wins and losses, as hard as that might be to process for you. We're building for 2018.

Not to mention that NBC has been drawing better rating than expected with the EPL this year in the 1st year of a 3-year deal. I've started watching and it's been great. What sets it apart from American sports is that the late season games at the bottom of the league are almost as exciting as the ones at the top of the league because the stakes are arguably even higher for those teams. I've been in withdrawals for about a month now.

So many people I'm friends with have adopted "futball" as their football offseason sport in just this last year. It's been great having the Copa Del Ray and all these meaningful games on in prime time here. If you give the Americans a legitimate sport during the offseason, we'll follow. Especially with baseball becoming less popular and basketball postseason becoming increasingly boring.

I didn't care about soccer 4 years ago today. I've watched every U.S. qualifier and every friendly the last four years, as well as innumerable MLS, EPL, UEFA Champions League, and Liga BBVA matches.

You couldn't be more wrong. Not to mention MLS attendance began outpacing the NBA in 2011.

White southern born Merican here.....

Soccer is a good sport and I enjoy it. I will not try to make anyone understand why soccer is good but..... What anyone has to like about soccer..... 45 minutes of action without commercial. Then another 45 minutes with no commercials.

This reason alone had pushed it ahead of baseball and basketball in my sports hierarchy. (Minus MSU baseball and basketball)

I would have a problem with an ignorant redneck being in charge.

there's nothing redneck about assuming illegal immigrants enhance t.v. soccer ratings here in the U.S. I'd be willing that they do and stating something factual is not redneck.

And there was more continuous action than football, baseball, or basketball provide.

The only people who complain about a 1-0 score line in soccer are the people who don't have a 17ing clue what they're watching the rest of the time.

I'll freely admit to not knowing the game...

...but please explain to me what the appeal of so-called "continuous action" is if it doesn't actually lead to anything? Guys are running around a lot? Why not just watch a marathon on TV? Guys are running around a lot there too...that doesn't make it intriguing.

I didn't say average legal Americans don't watch, I'm just saying that illegal immigrants probably make up the bulk of the soccer viewership. nothing racist about that. now go back to watching soccer.

How many illegal immigrants do you think live in the US? And how many do you think sit around and tune into European soccer? Enough to alter national ratings?

ESPN FC has exactly 0 Hispanic anchors.

Watch a MLS game and you see a lot of 20-35 white hipster demographic. Immigrants do follow the game, but more so for their home country national team and leagues. Efforts to build MLS franchises based on support of immigrants haven't gone well. I'd guess your EPL on NBCSN demographic is overwhelmingly white men under 40.

Average final score is actually 2-1. In a little under 2 hours. The average NFL game has 5 touchdowns. In a little over 3 hours. That's pretty close to 1 score every 40 minutes for each sport. The difference is, the soccer game featured 90 minutes of action. The NFL game, about 12.

So if soccer changed its rules to award 6 points for every goal immediately followed by a penalty kick for a chance at one more point you would be more interested?

Fantastic point. The US-Nigeria game was basically 14-7 if we are going by that logic. Thats a perfectly fine score in the NFL. And Germany beat Armenia the equivalent of 42-7. The only people that complain about the 1-0 games are people who don't understand the game AND have an unfounded and unchanging dislike for the game.

Only if soccer also changed the rules so that players had to stand around and do nothing for 40 seconds every time they kicked the ball while we all watched the same kick 3 times on replay.

That first score line is considered a complete beat down in the EggBowl, though.

Come on, guy. Y'all got beat down in the 4th quarter and OT with Dak gaining almost a 140 yards in less than a quarter. The rest of the game was obviously not a beat down, and anyone that claims it was is delusional. It's just embarrassing on y'all's part that you couldn't beat us with our 3rd string QB in.

I've never cared for soccer unless the US was playing in the World Cup (as previously stated). That being said, I've really gotten into watching any time the US plays in an event or a friendly (can't believe I just said that haha). Ever since Landon Donovan scored that goal against Algeria 4 years ago, I've actually been interested.

Hell, I have even watched a handful of Champion League events in the past 4 years. Granted, that adds up to probably 4 matches, but that is 4 more than I had ever watched before.

Unlike baseball where there is very little action

unless you count watching the batter adjust his batting gloves for the 50th time or the pitcher scratching his crotch and spitting. And the final score still ends up being 1-0. Baseball scores generally aren't that much higher than soccer scores but in soccer the action never stops while baseball is 3 hours of game time with about 15 minutes of action.

I won't begrudge you your enjoyment of soccer. If more Americans are getting into it, great, although I'm not one of them. However, you can't seriously be arguing here that it is superior to American football as a spectator sport?
