Final Regular Season Game and big SEC Tournament implications.

I posted this before, but I’ll post it here too. We get a first round bye (top 4 seed) if:

1. We beat Georgia and South Carolina loses or ties against Vandy.

2. We beat Georgia and Tennessee loses or ties against Alabama.

3. We tie Georgia and Tennessee loses to Alabama and South Carolina loses to Vandy and Kentucky loses or ties with A&M and LSU loses or ties with Florida.

We go beyond that and we’re into common opponents and goal differentials.

We can get as high as the 2 seed (if we beat Georgia and South Carolina beats Vandy and Alabama beats or ties Tennessee and we somehow win on tiebreakers) or as low as the 8 seed if we lose and South Carolina, Kentucky, and LSU win.

For the soccer uninitiated, a win is 3 points, a tie is 1 point, and a loss is 0 points.

Also, here are the tiebreakers.

Tiebreaker Rules

The tournament will be seeded 1-12 based on the point system implemented to determine regular season standings. If teams are tied, the following procedures, in order as follows, will be used until the tie is broken:

Two-Team Tie:

  1. Head-to-head competition between the tied teams;
  2. Points earned versus common opponents;
  3. Goal differential versus common opponents;
  4. Goals scored versus common opponents;
  5. Won-Lost record of the two teams versus highest seeded common opponent and proceeding through the No. 16 seed, if necessary;
  6. Goal differential versus highest seeded common opponent and proceeding through the No. 16 seed, if necessary;
  7. Goals scored versus highest seeded common opponent and proceeding through the No. 16 seed, if necessary;
  8. Coin flip by the Commissioner
The following procedure will be used until the tie is broken. If at any time this tie breaker results in only two remaining tied teams, then the two-team tiebreaker (above) will be used, beginning with subsection 1:

Three or More Team Tie:

  1. If all teams have played one another, then most points earned in those matches only;
  2. If all teams have not played, but one team has defeated all teams in the tie break, then that team breaks the tie and shall be placed highest. Remaining teams will continue with the tie break procedure;
  3. If all teams have not played one another and a team does not have all wins over the tied teams, then use Subsection 2 in the two-team tie break procedures and continue through the two team tie-break procedures until ties between all teams are broken (except Subsection 8 will read “if three or more teams are still tied, the Commissioner will conduct a draw”).

Game hasn’t started and there’s already a long unexplained video review.

Harrison is GK again.

Perry just took a bad hit, went down, and is hobbling around.

Perry moving better and has had some good touches.

We’re clearing the ball and reversing the field in this game. Been looking for this all season.

Yeah. That looks like a permanent change. You don’t go back & forth with your GK. Also good news / bad news. Aidia Symminds is out because she got called up to the U19 national team.

Man, we left a UGA player wide open and she just overshot the goal. Lucky there.

#27 for us (Elsa Johnson) is the fastest player on the field. If she can figure out how to fight and obtain possession, she’ll be a dangerous player.

Jibril took an ugly hit, but no foul called. Jibril may not return to the game.

ETA: Nevermind. She’s back.

0-0 at the half

We have 0 shots on goal and Georgia has 1.

We’ve had 2-3 opportunities just outside their box, but overshot the entire goal each time.

Pretty ugly game in wet field conditions. We’re giving Georgia way too much possession in our half. Got to get more possession & in their half.

Dammit. Our best opportunity all game and Taylor couldn’t get the shot off in time. We’re at least playing on their side of the field now.

VAR for a possible foul on Buxton. Possible PK coming for Georgia.

ETA: No PK!

There is a foul called on the offense on every corner kick.

Wild sequence where Georgia got 3 quick yellow cards. We’re getting some looks now, but we haven’t converted.

Jibril just made a perfect slide tackle that probably would have resulted in a Georgia goal.

25 mins left. Still 0-0

Ref finally had enough of UGA persistent fouls. Great tackle by jabril to save a terrible turnover by her.

17. Bad turnover and we couldn’t clear it out. Georgia scores. 1-0 with 15 minutes left.

Full time. Georgia wins 1-0.

We’ll be somewhere between a 5 & 8 seed in the SEC Tournament.

That's a rinse and repeat of most of the goals we gave up this season it seems
It absolutely was. I feel like most of our game-deciding goals in our losses were 2nd and 3rd chance shots or a turnover by the back line. This was both.

Lot of 2nd chance goals given up this year. Both goalies have to learn to clear the ball out of danger instead of kicking it right to the foot of an opposing player. But part is they’re pretty helpless due to defensive lapses. After watching the new GK, I’m not a fan of the change. Its just very hard to play GK at this level when you’re 5’6”. The other 2 GK are both 6’0”. We almost gave up an own goal on what would have been a routine header back to either of the other 2 GK.

If you had told me we’d be 5-4-1 & a top 8 seed I’d have been happy. But the way it’s played out we finished pretty weakly. Ally Perry has virtually disappeared since the red card. Need to get a lot cleaned up for the postseason.

BTW, watching the USWNT vs Portugal. And even though it’s the B-team for USA, the difference in quality between this and SEC soccer is huge.

I watched it too. Did you watch the game Thursday? USWNT looked a lot better today.

You’re right though, losing 4 out of the last 5 has sucked, especially the way we lost each one. I wouldn’t be surprised if we’re one and done in both the SEC and NCAA tournament.

Did not watch Thursday. Sounds like it was bad.
