There was a MSU fan that died in section 119 right before the game. They worked on him for quite a while, but it took 15 plus minutes to even find a police officer or EMT at the stadium to come help. Probably the worst response time you could imagine at a large public event.
Prayers for the man's family, especially his wife who was with him.

It was ridiculous how long it took the EMTs to get there. god bless the state fans who stepped in to try and resuscitate this poor fellow.

I saw the EMTs trying to find the section and I was in 109. It was not their lack of response as much as the confusion surrounding were to go. I was surprised at the lack of police in the general stadium area. I knew a lot of the officers on the field. Sad situation. I don't fault the EMTs. Communication was bad inside the stadium.

Jesus, the Liberty Bowl I thought was great, but they need to quit hyperfocusing on things like capacity and ignoring like capacity and stuff like this.

Really hard to look past the inability of the staff, but to have MSU football somehow intertwine in his legacy... Prayers sent.

Wow. From 117 I told my brother I thought someone may have died. His response was that there's no way they could take that long if it was an emergency. Horrible.

Not necessarily EMTs fault on responding but it took at least 10 minutes to find someone, anyone who had a radio to try to get police/EMTs up there. After EMTs arrived it took another 10+ minutes to get the medical golf cart up there to try to take him to the ambulance. It was horrendous emergency management on the part of the Liberty bowl.

He was an older gentleman. Was just sitting there and then slumped over. People were doing CPR on him as soon as we realized that he was more than just passed out.

Two state folks and a rent a cop worked on him at least 15-20 minutes before the EMTs got there. There were others but I don't know who they were. Felt so bad for his wife who had to watch this whole thing transpire. If only this could have happened after the game rather than before.

If info comes forth, We should honor him. No publicity, nothing like that, just a respectful memorial to him. Again, not a SPS thing, but a fellow bulldog thing. We are family.

This speaks why AT&T needs to beef up their networks in stadiums. If you have a
AT&T phone it was useless till after halftime tonight. At DWS it's good for nothing more than a camera.

AT&T worked in DWS this year. I'm not sure what all they did but every game my phone worked perfectly.

We were 8 seats away on the same row. It was absolutely ridiculous how long it took for the medics/security to arrive. Not only that, but the two women sitting behind us said "Oh my God, are they going to shock him with all of us sitting on the aluminum seats. I'm getting up." They were on the row behind us and were worried about the EMTs using that apparatus on a lifeless human being because they didn't want to get shocked? Some people amaze me.

It's amazing

with all of the advancements in cellphone technology that they're little more than paper weights at events

We have shocked people hundreds and hundreds of times in ICU and never have I seen the current transmit to another person. You have to physically be touching the person to get shocked during defibrillation.

For what ever reason that stadium has always been like a maze for me. I was in 117 and after going up & down, retracing my steps once, climbing over a few people - I finally made it to my seats. Told the folks I was sitting beside that I should of had a map. I remember either in 2007 or after the Memphis game a few years ago it took me forever to find an exit. Everywhere I went was a closed gate & fence.

That could have played a part in delaying the EMTs.

Mine still didn't work. I know Stricklin said AT&T had space rented in DWS to put repeators but said there was no timeline as to when this could be done. Did you use data in DWS or phone. I am deaf as hell and would never even attempt to place a call on a stadium but I know my data was useless this last season too

AT&T 4G is useless in DWS but you can stream in HD on LTE.

I don't think I ever made a call in stadium but text and data worked for me.

It happened a few rows behind us. I agree it

Was a shame it took so long but the fans did the best they could and should be commended. Prayers to his family. That stadium needs handrails to, it is just plain dangerous.

What row was this on? I was in 119 on row 12 so unless it was before I got to

my seats or it was behind me I somehow missed it......

It was on row 71. It was three rows behind us. A guy who sat in front of us was a paramedic and jumped right in to work on the man that went down. My wife look at the clock and it was 35 min until they got to him with a d fib unit and other help. It was a bad start to the day for sure.

Someone told me this morning that he was from Madison and they thought his name was Joe Johnson. I felt awful for his wife, and the fans around him definitely did as much as humanly possible. Who knows what could have happened if we had a defibrillator a little sooner but CPR was started within a minute of him slumping over.
Mods, please delete if this is tmi.

I was a section over. I didn't realize it took that long to get someone over there- I didn't want to get anywhere close because there were already enough people in the way. Then I noticed some EMT's like 20 minutes later looking up to find the guy and was shocked they were just then getting to it. I thought they were up there the whole time.

Sorry to hear he died.

Part of the problem is it's an old stadium and it's just hard to modify it the way it needs to be to be more prepared for things like this, but they still need to be a bit more prepared. They probably needed to have staff up there roping that off and making people take detours. Hard to do, yes, but it would have made it a lot less confusing and it's worth ticking some people off that don't realize what's going on anyway.

I thought handrails were required now. Some of us old farts with bad backs and knees are committing suicide trying to walk down steps without a handrail. I remember before they were installed in the Hump it was extremely dangerous.

You'd be surprised how many places are not in accordance with federal and state regulations. One of our assignments in PT school is to go out in the community and do an environmental assessment in local businesses to see if they meet standards. Several don't and some are missing some pretty key things.

I do realize a lot of places are old and you can't just install a standard sized wheelchair ramp or whatever, but it's scary to think about when things go wrong.

Regardless, they need to have an overhaul of their emergency response protocol. That was pathetic.
