The Bulldogs lost more games to non-BCS opponents from 1998 to 2007 than any SEC team not named Vanderbilt. They also suffered as many losses at the hands of I-AA foes as they had nonconference victories over BCS opponents. Take away Mississippi State's 6-0 mark against Memphis during that span, and the Bulldogs are just 9-7 against I-A competition from smaller conferences. Don't look now, but this season began with a 22-14 loss at Louisiana Tech.

Take away Mississippi State's 6-0 mark against Memphis...
Did you take a look at what other SEC teams records would be if you took away Memphis and other CUSA opponents?

Until we can beat non-BCS teams with regularity we don't need to be playing the WVU and Ga Tech's of the world.

sandwiched in between LSU and Bama, and it's for this.

and what kind of cherry-picking ******** is this?
Take away Mississippi State's 6-0 mark against Memphis during that span,
nice, alter the facts to line up with your beliefs. Mr. Neuman would fit in well here.

...how "power conference" teams load up on cupcakes & sometimes get beat (ie, embarassed) instead of sticking to real football programs when it comes to scheduling.

I agree with the article's premise.

Just think: If MSU had substituted @ LA Tech for @Oklahoma State or @Kansas the first game, the first loss of the season (an away loss vs. a decent team) could at least be put in context. (Just like Ole Miss's loss @ WF can be put in context).

But since it was a loss @LA Tech, the only context the loss can be put in is: "Miss. State sucks."

Also notice the other teams listed in the article are about on par with MSU as far as the data.

but if there were a 16 team playoff instead of a 2 team matchup, you'd see far better non-conference schedules. If you took away the bowl games too then there would be no point in loading up on cupcakes as merely winning 6 games wouldn't be good enough for the postseason.

we lost one I-AA game to maine, right?

i think this is a load of crap. EVERY win we have, other than our out-of-conference games, is over a "powerhouse SEC team" (as the non-bcs schools put it). why the hell should we make it hard on ourselves and play other bcs schools out of conference? we have plenty of hard games. besides, we actually struggle to beat la tech and tulane and houston, so i think we're right on par with the teams we ARE playing out of conference. until we can beat them like we should, there's no need to make it more difficult on our poor coach... actually, these numbers will probably change under our new AD, who just was quoted as wanting to continually have a home-and-home series against a bcs opponent, giving us one OOC BCS game each season. </p>
