and not miss a beat. I wish that could be us.
Neither of those are good examples.usually come from within and prefer the same style of football. Some look good year one but never really improve much.
i.e. Michigan (so far) and Florida
My observation is that generally when a coach comes in and is successful right away it is because the previous staff had recruited pretty well and just couldn't coach them. Bo's early success was due to Suh and company, most of whom were Callahan recruits. There may be a few counter examples but not many.and not miss a beat. I wish that could be us.
I agree. Which is why you need both good talent and a good coach. I don't think we've had that combination since Osborne retired. My observation is that generally when a coach comes in and is successful right away it is because the previous staff had recruited pretty well and just couldn't coach them. IMO it's more getting the elite players than coaching yes you need a good to great coach but look at TOI agree. Which is why you need both good talent and a good coach. I don't think we've had that combination since Osborne retired.
I agree. A perfect example is Miami in 2001. They had elite talent but not elite coaching.IMO it's more getting the elite players than coaching yes you need a good to great coach but look at TO
He was the coach when we had Mickey Joseph we struggled to win TO was the coach when we had tommy
Frazier same coach but tommy was a elite player Charlie McBride I recall in the mid 1980's most people
Wanted Charlie run out of town couldn't coach when we finally get elite players Charlie is a genius, I don't
Know if coach Riley is the answer or not I do know BO left the cupboards pretty bare before you boycott games just remember TO's struggles in his first years and in the mid 80's losses to Iowa state Missouri tie with okie st couldn't beat OU we just remember his last 5 years, think about this what if TO wins 3 titles in the early 80's instead of mid 90's and he retires in 97 win a 9-4 record I believe that changes our presentation don't get me wrong I want a conference championship really bad I hate that we've almost lowered our expectations to beating freaking Iowa
and not miss a beat. I wish that could be us.

Michigan didn't after Lloyd Carr left, OU didn't after Switzer left, Texas didn't after Mack Brown left, USC didn't after Pete Carroll left, Ohio State didn't after Tressel left. It took a coach or two, or three before the teams mentioned got back on track. It happens to the best of them. Hell, it took more than a few years from 1979-1992 for Alabama to win a NC, and they had a few coaches in that time period.and not miss a beat. I wish that could be us.

What was TO's record over those 3-4 years with Joseph? Pretty good really. No not NC caliber, but we would be ecstatic to have that record now. Did we have elite talent then? Nope not overall. So how could we possibly win so many games?? Because TO had a recipe to stack the odds in his favor EVEN without the best talent. This type of team must have elite talent to compete. There's no other way and that's a tall order in Lincoln , like it or not.IMO it's more getting the elite players than coaching yes you need a good to great coach but look at TO

Actually, quite a few on this board say they want Frost to get some experience as a head coach first, which he is doing now, obviously. Then they would welcome him back. I wouldn't be opposed to that at all if he has success. There are many examples of a coach taking over a team and after a year or two improving the program but I can't think of too many year 1. (I really hope p.j. fleck isn't the one to prove me wrong, I hate that fake) Emotions are High and the passion is why we watch the game. As an Iowa fan there were alot of names thrown out after 14 of who was going to be our next HC. Bohl, Diaco, Narduzzi, and Stoops are the ones I remember, who knows who we would have actually had a chance with. If you guys had it your way who would you have coach Neb? In an efdort to have a good conversation please be somewhat realistic. We would all love Bill B, or gruden but that pry isn't going to happen. I'm guessing Scott frost is pretty high on the list?
