make the prediction on The Head Patterson that is referred to in this article posted at 12:01 a.m. on January 22?

http://www.timesfreepress...eads-msu-recruiting-haul/

Yazoo City defensive end Fletcher Cox is Mississippi's No. 2 prospect and Tupelo receiver Chad Bumphis is No. 3, and each has committed to MSU. The state's top prospect, Macon receiver Patrick Patterson, committed to the Bulldogs before Croom was fired and is now considering Alabama and Ole Miss, but Newberg thinks he will wind up in Starkville.
WTF? Yeah, I realize we're talking about Newberg, but, still, that's got to make some of our reb regulars a little antsy. It's a good thing Bruiser doesn't follow recruiting.

He's been saying that since Mullen was hired. He interviewed Coach back in December for his television show and said he couldn't imagine Patterson signing with anyone other than State with Mullen's offense. He also reaffirmed the prediction in a Rivals article earlier this week.

perfectly into the offense because of how often they throw the crossing routes. And according to everyone that has seen him play, that would be his specialty. That is what is so baffling about the situation. I would say that he is afraid that we won't have a QB to throw to him, but tenn.s' QB situation is no better than ours and bama has no proven QB. The only one is Mississippi, with sneed who will be a junior next year. Go figure.

He's just a receiver though, so he falls near the bottom of my personal wish list for the close of the rest of our class. He and Marlon Brown both. The star-gazers are the ones hanging on Patterson and Brown. Let us pull the miracle and land Bobby Massie and follow that up with Cotton for a QB, and I'll be happy. The rest would be gravy to me.

And nothing would surprise me with Patterson based on what he's been saying and doing.

He's at a position that's one of the least of our needs. I don't care what they rate him, I'd rather have Massie and Cotton before him, and I'd also rather have Drummond (the DT), and a LB or two out of the remaining guys on our board. After that, then I'd like to get Patterson or Marlon Brown.

See, some of us actually look at something besides the rankings when looking at a recruiting class or individual recruits. For me, I'm looking at the fact that we lose 3 of our 4 DB starters after 2009 (we're signing a ton in this class), and we lose 3 OL starters after 2009 (so OL is a high priority in this class). We lose two starting LBs after 2009 (LB is a priority). We lose three of our top 4 DEs after 2009 (DL is a priority). We will only have 2 scholarship QBs on campus after 2009, assuming Snead doesn't go early (so QB is a priority). We're alright at RB, and we have a good crop of young WRs. So that's why guys like Patterson and Brown (regardless of ranking) fall near the bottom of my want list.

That may not make a lot of sense to you, but that's just the way I look at recruiting. For instance, if I were a State fan, I'd be pretty upset about the lack of OL in this incoming class (only 2 commits and no Juco help on the way). You have one very good O-lineman on your current roster (Sherrod) and a bunch of projects, so you need O-linemen in a BAD way, yet you are not even close to addressing it with this class. I don't care how many Chad Bumphis's, Dennis Thames's, or Fletcher Cox's you sign, you still won't win games if you don't have an O-line. Those guys may make your class have a pretty ranking, but you won't be winning anything until you get someone to block for your offense.

That's true if you plan on running the Texas Tech/Memphis style spread where you use the short passing game as your running game, but if you run a spread option style offense, you better have someone to block for you. For that matter, you might want to ask Graham Harrell if he wished he had a better OL. He did have a decent OL, but if you have a weak OL, even in a passing spread, it's going to still make things difficult.
