Collins. I saw a 3-1 count with Detz at the plate. We had runners at 1st and 2nd in a tie ballgame in the bottom of the 7th.
Next thing I know, live stats says that Collins got thrown out by the catcher trying to steal 3rd. That can't be possible. Please explain what really happened for those that can't watch.
That was actually a "Run and Hit". Yes, stated "backwards" on purpose because it's different from a hit and run. On a run and hit, the batter only swings at fastballs in order to protect the runner, but takes off speed stuff under the guise that he'll be able to straight steal successfully on those. In that case(a 3-1 count), Detz' job was to only swing at a fastball STRIKE and put a bat on that pitch -- while taking everything else.
What got Collins hosed was a worst case scenario on a high ball that essentially worked as a pitch out once Detz swung through it anyway. Big mistake on his part -- and it left Collins out to dry. Leave the bat on his shoulder there and they are loaded for Rea.
That said, I hated doing that in a situation where one of our hottest hitters already has RISP -- and a hit likely scores Collins in either circumstance with what was always pretty likely to be the winning run. Should not be making 3rd outs at 3rd base.
Last night was kinda a "worst case scenario" where everything we tried to do in the small ball game and on the base paths backfired on us. As such, it gives the appearance as one of Cohen's most overmanaged game in awhile, which I actually believe it was.
