Collins. I saw a 3-1 count with Detz at the plate. We had runners at 1st and 2nd in a tie ballgame in the bottom of the 7th.

Next thing I know, live stats says that Collins got thrown out by the catcher trying to steal 3rd. That can't be possible. Please explain what really happened for those that can't watch.

Why are we hitting and running with a 3-1 count, two outs, and the lead run on

second?

Not to mention our hottest hitter at the plate in Detz. We just took a scoring opportunity out of Detz's hands.

Bases loaded no outs... Dude threw absolutely nothing but breaking balls. Lazy pop fly, K looking... And then Robeson hesitating to run home, gets thrown out.

Now Robson thrown out at the plate trying to score on a wild pitch

Had bases loaded with no outs and didn't score. Two innings in a row the third out has come on the basepaths.

A win is a win and I'll gladly take it, but if we duplicate the hitting and base running skills that we showcased last night this weekend against Arkansas, we will be lucky to win 1 of 3.

That was actually a "Run and Hit". Yes, stated "backwards" on purpose because it's different from a hit and run. On a run and hit, the batter only swings at fastballs in order to protect the runner, but takes off speed stuff under the guise that he'll be able to straight steal successfully on those. In that case(a 3-1 count), Detz' job was to only swing at a fastball STRIKE and put a bat on that pitch -- while taking everything else.

What got Collins hosed was a worst case scenario on a high ball that essentially worked as a pitch out once Detz swung through it anyway. Big mistake on his part -- and it left Collins out to dry. Leave the bat on his shoulder there and they are loaded for Rea.

That said, I hated doing that in a situation where one of our hottest hitters already has RISP -- and a hit likely scores Collins in either circumstance with what was always pretty likely to be the winning run. Should not be making 3rd outs at 3rd base.

Last night was kinda a "worst case scenario" where everything we tried to do in the small ball game and on the base paths backfired on us. As such, it gives the appearance as one of Cohen's most overmanaged game in awhile, which I actually believe it was.

I'm not sure I agree Cohen over-managed last night. He did make the right pitching moves at the right time. SE Missouri played well and #36, that last pitcher did a really good job with his pitches through the bottom of the 8th. You are right about Detz, he should have been taking that last pitch. I was sitting behind 3rd base and I don't know where Robson had his head but that passed ball didn't go far and he waited too long. Ministroni was trying to get him to move sooner. Not much of a lead either.

Henderson did a good job to take the slider to left center. Talked to him after the game and he said they were all flat after the Vandy series. Said Cohen made that point quite well after the game. You know baseball better than most on the board and sometimes a coach has to manage more small stuff than normal with a flat ball club. Not that it's an excuse but it happens. Even Holder struggled a little (with some help from Blue). All in all, they kept it close and won it.

Glad brusier wasn't there....they'd still be trying to jumpstart him in the ambulance.....

I agree with you on the pitching moves -- but it's worth noting that those are basically all Butch. Cohen gives him as close to complete autonomy to "manage" our pitching staff as almost any pitching coach I've ever been around.

The "overmanagement" part of what I'm saying really comes from bunting Pirtle over to 3rd with no outs in the second inning when we started the game hitting very well. I hated that call even though we eventually got the run home. To me, nothing makes a team "flat" faster than early sac bunts that put the bat on their shoulder right when we are seemingly starting to get going offensively. Playing for one run against Beede is one thing -- against SEMOSt is quite another. And we struggled at the plate for the majority of the rest of the game.

Also, didn't like the "bunting over" attempt by Randolph in the 7th with Armstrong on first. Just let him straight steal into scoring position there.

That was a pop fly bunt by randolph..

Looked like SEMO was about to double us off. The 2nd baseman was 10 ft from the plate. I thought he should have been pushing the bunt toward 3rd but maybe he was and got under the pitch.

Tell you one thing though it was cold as my banker's heart we gave a couple of pitches long rides early. After the sun set I don't think we could have hit the ball that far. It had to be like hitting an eight pound cannon ball with a boat paddle.

I was there. And I am still alive, thank you!
