I don’t remember much about the place. I only went there once with my older sister and brother-n-law which were in school at the time. The year was 1970 or 1971. I was only 13-14 yrs old. The way I remember it was pretty much just a filling station. A Gulf oil or Texaco.

In my day, Johns was also called the Wood Pile.
What I knew it as. Only went once because word had it they had Bud in longneck bottles for sale. One of those dumb things that was "cool" because beer around here all came in what looks like a Miller Hi Life bottle as I recall. Bought a case and they came in a packaged in a waxed heavy cardboard box. As a PBR guy, thought I was one big spending cool guy that day.

Len Lews burned to the ground in the early/mid 80s. I was inside when it caught on fire. It was early afternoon. I was playing the Miss America pinball machine drinking a long neck Bud heavy. The Budweiser guy was delivering beer. He went in the bathroom to take a piss. He came running out of the bathroom yelling the ceiling was on fire. The 2 employees went to the bathroom to take a look. I didn't pay much attention until they started freaking out. The four of us went outside and the roof was on fire big time. We went back inside and the employees saved the cash and stereo equipment. I filled up the trunk of my car with cases of beer. The fire dept eventually showed up but it was too late to do anything. It burned to the ground.

I have no idea how the fire started but the origin was in the attic space. I think there was a wood stove heater on the back wall. The chimney/stove pipe may have caused the fire.
I remember those pinball machines when you got to winning the magnet kicked in and it would take it back and they tilted really easy. Do you all remember that guy from Sturgis George Rhodes who was strong as an ox got drunk one night and started fighting and it took 7-8 deputies to take him down. He was a man among boys..

Len Lew's, The Crossroads and Echols were all were all classic "beer joints" back in the day. I wish everyone on this board could have experienced them. You would have loved them.
What was the other club close to Len Lews, but across 45 on the east side? Wasn’t right on the highway, but not too far off.
I was a Pike, and got into with an E one night. He couldn’t take care of himself though, so I had to be blindsided by two of his buddies. I ended up in the infirmary ER, but I must have got at least one good lick in because I ended up with a fractured hand. Lol!

YES! I bought many cases from there in the early mid 90's
In its later years it was a BP station but I don't recall what it was when I was in school. There were massive crowds that hung out there on Sunday afternoons, big gravel parking lot would be full and it was both black and white folks but I don't remember there ever being a problem. You'd have to park out on 45 and walk through all the vehicles and people to get to the store

Early 90s here... I was from Columbus. Mostly everyone wanted to go to The Club or Classix, I was meh but went and had a good time none the less and retired to my family home often. I enjoyed more the apartment parties at College station and Chadwick. Cheers was ok too but small.

Starkville finally has enough night life, today's kid stay in Starkville to party. Only time my kids go to Columbus is for Cracker Barrel.
My recollection of Classix from my one trip. Lotta electronic dance music and lotta people on ecstasy or something similar. Might have been a one off night, but I preferred the drunk crowd and did not return.

If I was a businessman with some serious capital, I would invest in 2 new (but old names) in the Starkvegas area. 1) Open up a brand new Len-Lews and 2) a Sarge's cafe specializing in a good ole' greasy breakfast. Maybe even build them at or near their old locations.
I consider myself old, but neither of these have I ever been to. I think that your demographic has shifted to some of the newer old places being where the money is. I hear of several repeated here that were after my time but are no gone Flo and Eddy's (sp?) being one of them.

John's/The Wood Pile was North of the Crossroads at corner of 45 and Old West Point Rd. Back then it was on the NE corner of that intersection, now its on the SE corner but not sure its even open anymore. Old W Point Rd was one of the alternative routes back to campus if you heard there were roadblocks going back to Starkville on 82 or Artesia Rd.

here's a couple of pics to jog your memory. It was packed on Thursday nights as I recall.
When I went to State, I had to catch a ride back on Sunday afternoon and the guy I rode with always stopped at LenLew's for a beer(or two) on the way..I developed my taste right there(a lot time ago and not still today) along with the best hamburger I've ever eaten..I have always said if they were going to hang me in the morning, my last meal would be a cold beer and a hamburger from Lenlew's:):)

In my older age my memory is a little fuzzy. I do remember a friend of mine was living in a mobile home behind Len Lews and working there when it burned down. Friend called multiple people back in Starkville to say Len Lews was burning. There was a caravan of cars leaving Starkville to go see it burn. I was one of them. For the longest time I had a brick from the building that I collected that night.

Extra credit: wasn’t there a filling station on the corner of old hwy 82 and hwy 45 that sold beer to just about anyone?
Yes , bought 2 sixers of Lite there one night after leaving the Landing at 1 a.m. Was underage, paid $20.

I had the honor of meeting Jack Cristil in Len Lews one evening. He was on his way to call a basketball game and stopped for a cheeseburger on his way to the game. I sat the bar stool next to him and we talked sports. Great guy and hated The Mississippi Webel bear sharks just as much as I do. I had been listening to him for my whole life and was thrilled to actually meet him and talk for a bit. That was about 1973 or 74.
