the tie breaker over Ohio State if both went undefeated.

Can someone explain to me how that is so?

The old Big 10 tiebreaker for the Rose Bowl was whoever had been the longest time ago to Pasadena won the tie. Obviously if you are talking about the BCS championship game that is unrelated to who the Big 10 would have decided to send to the Rose Bowl under that system.

If both go undefeated, then OSU is going to the BCS title game so the debate is moot.

said you MUST win your conference. If MSU holds a tie breaker over Ohio State, then if they both go undefeated, OSU won't be in the title game.

I dont know if the "MSU holds the tie breaker" thing is true or not. But there is no way they would pick OSU if they don't win the Big 10.

Tie breakers are used for seeding purposes for bowl and championship games. Example: Ole Miss claims a piece of the SEC West in some year (2003 maybe?) despite never making it to Atlanta. Since the Big Ten has no championship game, an undefeated OSU team would be considered a co-champ of the Big Ten and thus eligible for the BCS Championship game regardless of the other tie breaker scenarios.
