RECEIVING No. Yards

Vick Ballard 4 45
L. Perkins 1 11
P. Hanrahan 1 4
S. Hemphill 1 3
Robert Elliott 1 3

We have completed 90 passes on the year with only 8 going to our RB's (only 5 to Ballard or Perkins). On top of that, we are averaging over 8 yds a completion on those. I know we like to use our WR on screens, but with Ballards break-tackle ability and Perkins' speed, this is just one of those things that puzzles me. Maybe we are saving it for Ole Miss.

1) It is usually one of the easiest throws for a QB to make. Hitting a RB swinging out wide or sitting down in the middle of the zone on about an 8 yard curl or slant. High percentage plays for our semi-accurate QB.

2) It is not like our receivers are so sure handed that we don't want to waste opportunities throwing balls to our RBs.

3) Both of our primary RBs have excellent open field skills.

4) It seems like something that could be worked in beautifully with our option game.

5) Our QBs are now tall enough to see over the line to complete the quick hitter to the RB.

Obviously, I could spend all day talking about things we do right, and I certainly appreciate the coaching staff for those things. I am thankful that I am able to nitpick a few oddities in our offense. This just happens to be one of them. Someone who knows more about x's and o's please feel free to chip in...

I've noticed several thrown way behind the receiver where it probably would have been a loss had the receiver dove and caught it.

Is it possible we have to keep our RBs in the backfield for protection? I guess you don't need as much protection on a dump out, just sayin, our OL is really good run blocking but pass blocking is lacking a little.

What route would you feel more comfortable drawing up for him? I mean, I am still not to the point where I don't hold my breath every time he lets go of the ball.

Like I've been saying, Relf severely limits what we can do on offense in the passing game- especially against respectable defenses.

Dan has proven that he can run an offense. Les is a pretty good OC. Even Hudspeth has shown that he can run an offense. It's not the coaching or lack of creativity this time. Our scheme is only as good as the players that can run it, and fortunately for us we have some really good players on defense and a pretty darn good running back in Vick Ballard because Relf is essentially a big halfback with a strong arm. The o-line doesn't help very much when we do want to pass as well. Thank God for Derek Sherrod and John Hevesey. It's definately a duct tape and bailing wire situation with the other four.

I think there are a lot of things that Dan wants to do, but we just can't. Like jump passes, or throwing the ball on the third and one at LSU. The premise behind those plays is not bad- it's bad because the personnel can not consistently produce results to warrant calling those plays.
