I can't stop laughing at this... The Big East is in that bad of a position that they're going for Memphis... Even more so that USM is sitting in the cold.
Anything interesting in there? Quotes from Big East people or just more speculation?
Does the Big East have any chance at keeping their football AQ status? Memphis is a joke of a football program that should pose no threat to us in recruiting, but I'd hate to have that extra factor there when recruiting against them in the future.
But they can kiss goodbye to their automatic bid to the tourney every year in basketball and its only going to get worse in football. UM football is not a remotely watchable product, it'll be tough for them to win a game if/when it goes through. I don't see them as any threat in recruiting for football, have we ever been very strong in Memphis anyways?
1. It's an immediate schedule upgrade for all sports. My wife is a huge Memphis fan, but she has a hell of a time getting me to go to games these days. I honestly just don't care at all about watching them play teams every week that would be our homecoming games on most years. Even though the Big East won't be a juggernaut once WV, Syracuse, and Pitt leave, I'll be much more interested in watching the remaining teams than anyone from CUSA.
2. No matter which way the Big East TV contract goes, it will be better than whatever Memphis is getting out of their current deal.
Now, those things aside, there are some pretty serious cons to this move also. For one, a truly awful football team is about to get a much more difficult schedule. I can honestly see Memphis going 0-12 for the first several years they're in the Big East. Then, getting to basketball, they are killing their current setup where they can burn through CUSA and get a great seed in the tournament. Even with the revised Big East, it's still going to be a pretty tough basketball league so you can add some losses to the Tigers' schedule every year.
So are we basically heading towardfour or five16 team conferences that really count? Looks like the Pac 12, B1G, and the SEC are way out in the lead and the ACC is trying to hang with the big boys. I see no long term future for the Big East or CONFUSA in their present state as a football conference. And who knows what the old Big 12 is doing.

We'll find out if the automatic berths really were just about money or not when we find out if they keep their bid. Either way, we're going to wind up with 5 super-conferences of between 12-16 teams each. The ACC, SEC, Big 10, Big 12, & PAC-12 aren't going anywhere. The only ones I see expanding in the near future is the ACC or maybe the Big 12. Then we're going to see two mid-major conferences with 16-20 teams each, the Big East and CUSA/MWC. The only real question is does one of those get a BCS bid (or maybe do they both share a BCS bid with the berth going to the higher rated champion)?
One thing that will most likely come of this is the Liberty Bowl tie ins. When the contracts are up they will swap CUSA with the Big East. Birmingham will probably end up with the CUSA champ.
A school whose athletic department is by definition teh suck has a chance to make an AQ BCS conference and you don't. That should tell you all you need to know about what the rest of the country thinks of your program.
The rest of the country knows that Southern is better than Memphis. And East Carolina. And a bunch of other schools. Check the ESPN comments section on this story. People are finally realizing what a sham the Big East is, as well as the BCS.
Mainly because of their basketball. Football, there may be some people starting to think USM when talking CUSA, but most think Houston bc of their success nationally and in the polls. Truth is, nobody really thinks about CUSA, much less a specific team in the CUSA. Truth hurts.....11 people.
Product on the field does not matter....market and market potential do. USM has an all time record of 72-43 against the new Big East with losing records to only 3 schools. Boise 0-2, SdSt 1-2, and Cincy 7-8
Oh wait, no it doesn't. I don't hate USM like a lot of people on this board do. Might have something to do with the fact that I lived in Hattiesburg for a little while. Hell, I'll even go so far as to say that I root for them when they're not playing State. But seriously, anybody with half a brain knows that USM is better than Memphis in everything but basketball. Now 17 off. Big East = ConfUSA 2.0
You are an eagle fan who stopped by here to brag when you heard southern had an "very outside" shot at the Sugar Bowl. At least all of the other southern fans are not trying to deceive us with their screen name.<div>
