National media are on vacation and the south is getting pounded. I saw a pic of a giant Tuscaloosa style wedge tornado in Mobile.

How y'all making out?

Bump. How did everyone fare with the weather?

We got a lot of rain in north MS, but nothing more (no warnings, even).

I heard there was a pretty nasty tornado near Picayune and also heard about one in Mobile. Anyone got any reports of anything else?

Midtown mobile was hit.

Tornado ran right through midtown and destroyed a lot of houses. 2 hospitals took damage and a number of businesses. Trees down and power out to 23k in the area- including mine. A very bizarre Christmas ending with me climbing over dozens of downed trees to assess the damage on a relative's house. I thought is was just investigating an alarm "glass break"...

The tornado near picayune actually went thru the community of McNeil and them up thru the northwest quarter of stone. It tore a bunch of trailers and a few houses up a few miles up the road from me.

North of I-10, east of I-65. South of HWY 98/ Springhill Avenue. The old section of town- mostly houses built from 1800's to 1950 and with lots of huge oaks lining the street.

Prichard was hit too, but I'm not familiar with that area....

Midtown is the area between downtown and I65. The tornado started south of Mobile in Tillman's Corner/Theodore area. Cut a path to the Rickarby area and "the loop". Lots of damage around the loop where government street meets airport blvd. NE to Murphy High School where it caused lots of damage. Then NE to the Mobile Infirmary. NE to the intersection of Telegraph Rd and Bay Bridge.

Draw a line through these areas in google maps and you will get a good idea of the path it took. These are the areas that "stood out" but there was lots of damage to homes and businesses in the path.

Edit to say: It's a miracle that there were no fatalities. Very thankful for that

Is that close to Wintzell's restaurant? I have a nephew opening up a restaurant just down the street from them soon.

Another Picayune native, no new news but did talk to the mayor who was cutting his vacation short heading back to survey the damage.

Neither Wintzell's was affected. The one downtown was closest, but was not in the path of the tornado.
