I remember a game a few years back when East hosted Prep and several of his offensive starters, including his top two or three running backs, were all out with injuries and there was some Prep fan on this site who had been counting East Surry as a win for them anyway. Prep had size and some good athletes but weren't coached very well.
Diamont saw they were lined up wrong on the first play of the game and called a deep pass that went for an easy touchdown. They ended up winning the game 17-12. Ugly as crap...but a masterpiece of coaching.
When he left East Surry, I told him if he ever wanted to coach again, just send any potential employers the tape of that game and the Mount Airy game later that season, when they beat the Bears 21-10 as something like 30-point underdogs. I doubt he needed any evidence to convince South to hire him, though.
When he's coaching against a team with better athletes, he's like the proverbial poker player who somehow manages to convince the other guy to fold with four aces when he's got a pair of deuces. When I brought up those two games in conversation, I could tell they were enjoyable memories.
If he doesn't get those nine wins for 300 this year, he's not going to miss by much.
