Our Cocker Spaniel of 13+ years was hit by a car Monday evening. When I rushed out to help him, not thinking, I reached for him and he latched onto my left thumb, hard, twice.

By the end of the evening I had to have him put down and had gotten 10 stitches in my thumb. The pain was strong, throbbing. I was pleasantly surprised however that they didn't offer me some form of Oxy pain med, and recommended I stick with Motrin. I could have probably whined enough to get some, and can see how so many people get it prescribed to them and then end up becoming addicted.

sucks. Sorry to hear that. My lab-Newfy is twelve and he's beginning to decline. He's been a great friend.

Sorry to hear. All dogs go to heaven.

My lab bit me on the hand once because he was startled. One of the most painful flesh wounds I have ever had and that is coming from someone with more than my share of flesh wounds.

That's awful. Sorry. I still miss every dog I've ever had.

I had a friend's wife that got addicted to Oxy. It started as a legitimate medical need and ended up being an addiction. It really is that easy for it to happen to people. It bothers me when people paint the addicted as scum. Illegal drugs is different, but prescription pain killers often start as legitimate need.

As for the pain from the bite, I know it all too well. I was attacked when I was 10. I had a bunch of puncture wounds all over my arms from having to try to fight the dog off. I think it took 30 some stitches in total, but it was all 1 here and 2 there from all the bites. I was at my uncle's farm and was left alone there mowing the grass and there was a stray dog there. He seemed fine, but when I got off the mower one time he just attacked. He would jump and attack until he knocked me down and then just circle me snarling. When he'd start to wander off I'd get up and try to run and he'd come after me. Took 3 or 4 of those before I could make it into the house. Then I had to just wait until my dad and uncle or mom and aunt came back to get to the hospital which was about an hour away. Pretty traumatizing.

Sorry ... just hearing about the dog bite brought all of that back.

I'm truly sorry for your loss.

Wow...first off sorry to hear of your pooch Mntneer, and of the unfortunate bite, that sucks...
And also sorry to hear that Lab/Newf of yours bamaEER starting to fade a bit....
The Lab/Newf sitting at my feet right now has canine melanoma. We did a lengthy treatment on him which was relatively non invasive and he still has a VERY active and happy life...for now...the vets did mention it will come back with a vengence eventually (maybe a year or so), so we are just happy to have him healthy and happy at the moment. I took my first Newf dog 'home' to Newfoundland a couple years before she passed. Just organizing this summer's trip to take this boy home too...you would not believe how much of a big deal it is for the Newfie people to see one of their dogs even walking about the streets, they get downright emotional...like a national symbol to them...not many in Newfoundland own
them anymore...hope your pooch can hang in there and has more good days than bad ones down the stretch....

That's really neat. I know of 2 other lab/newfs in the area and they are all sweet and gentle just like mine. Mine is doing okay, just doesn't hear or see all that well and he's got lots of arthritis, but we do play almost everyday and he is as happy as can be.
