Speculate: What Will the Townsend Effect on This Year's Defense?

I hope much more aggressive. I got tired of seeing two future nfl cb playing 10 yards off the ball every play. I want them up on the receiver wreaking havoc instead of basically letting them make the catch and then running up to tackle them.

I have to agree with this. How successful that is depends on the dline.

I'm not sure how much Townsend will drive it but Collins will have a better

prepared more aggressive defense this year. I'm pretty confident on that
front.

Hopefully David Turner's finger prints are the most visible on the 2013 defense.

I'm with you on this. If the rumors about Wilson and his actual coaching are true - hopefully there is an upgrade as far as actual coaching of our DL.

I just hope they are in better positions to make plays. Last year we were almost always out of position in the secondary. I think Deshea has seen his fare share of offense schemes hoping he can teach them diagnosis. I'm interested to see how much he can teach the guys on reading the plays pre-snap from particular sets. I really hope we can get way more pressure with our front 4. I think we have some pass rush talent up there with Ryan Brown, Autry, Chris Jones, Evans, James, Preston Smith, PJ Jones, Jordan Washington, AJ Jefferson.

I don't know if he was a scapegoat or what but just that he was a much better recruiter than coach.

But Fletcher Cox throws that theory out of the water.

I dont know DS. I am pretty sure Fletcher would have found the league and produced regardless of whether Wilson was his position coach or not. The defense was broken last year. We would all agree. I just hope it was because our DC was an idiot and not because of other reasons. I guess we are about to find out though. Can't wait for the season to start.

I was speaking of DL coaching specifically. He might have been a horrible DC but a good DL coach.

But Fletcher Cox throws that theory out of the water.

Wilson was a good X's and O's DL coach but didn't get a great response for various reasons. For example, DL was the only position group on the team that would have their phones taken up the night before gameday. His approach to discipline led to some resentment.

I think we will see Townsend imprint more in recruiting. Gotta remember this is his first major coaching job.

You pretty much summed it up. The game needs to be simple and fun again and

Whitley needs to be free and comfortable collecting pelts instead of worrying about the
exact spot is is supposed to be in. Last year was a disaster with Nickoe and Broomfield at the safeties
with no comfort level what so ever.

Plus, a position coach is really teaching the overall philosophy installed by the defensive coordinator, so there won't be some dramatic improvement just because of Townsend's direct coaching. His influence would possibly be more felt if Collins pulls him in on overall defensive strategies.

Our problems in the secondary last year had a lot more to do with the overall defensive strategy and less to do with direct coaching from the position coach.

with football, it largely boils down to either talent or coaching. so, with 2 known second round draft picks (banks and slay), another that was decent enough to participate in nfl camps (broomfield), and a fourth who is projected to be a draft pick (whitley), we know it wasnt a talent problem....which leaves coaching as the only possible explanation. its mind boggling how much talent we wasted in the secondary last year....i know im preaching to the choir, but its apparent wilson was in over his head in the coaching dept. from a talent perspective, we had unicorn tears...and because of coaching, we treated it like it was donkey piss.
