Iowa's RBs seemed quite fast, and the only DB we had who could keep up was Gerry, a sprinter in high school. Were their RBs faster than Newby or Bryant?

No, we have a speed deficiency on D---specifically at LB. That is my biggest issue with LB recruiting, IMO need more speed than size.

You would be incorrect. Wadley was probably one of the fastest guys on the field, and definitely faster than NU RBs.

Iowa has better backs

We simply can not win in the trenches and that is the biggest problem with this program. We can get excited about KJJ and the like all we want but skill players get you no where when the line doesn't control the game and give those guys room and time to work.

We've had some pretty mediocre backs over the years who looked like studs because the line was creating holes that a bulldozer would make it through. Until we build the lines we'll continue to be an after thought of a program.

Regardless of how good Iowas running backs are and how fast they are Riley described it perfectly, "They played lousy." The team that plays the lousiest looses.

You don't think Nebraska has a speed deficiency on D? If you don't see large, slow LB then you are missing something. Nebraska LB have made a lot of RB look fast this year.

Wadley is a special talent and wished he got more carries. He will be the feature back next year so he should see the bulk of the action.

Daniels is a good back and relatively fast for his size. Might have a shot as a back up in the NFL

I don't believe we have a large speed deficiency at LB. I watched Josh Banderas run an 11 flat 100m in high school which probably translates to a 4.5 or so 40. Its about confidence, aggression and not having a 300lb lineman in your face on every play. We looked slow yesterday and at OSU but otherwise ok.
The one that looks slow to me is #24. He gets picked on all the time because he can't keep up with the guys he's assigned to cover. That nickel positon needs to get better.

football speed much different than sprinter speed. I think Banderas played faster for the most part this season. Where he struggled was over pursuing and getting caught up in the mess and losing his inside leverage. Where this team lacked speed was the outside with MRI and Young.

Young got trucked a few times. Bando, for being a senior, whiffed on a couple big runs. MRI was capable of dominating but this scheme isn't about that. I hope all the young buck LB's stick around and maybe Banker figures out how to be aggressive instead of passive all of the time...Marcus Newby did OK but don't recall seeing him on the field much..

All of these guys across position groups run within a step or two of each other in shorts in the summer on a track.

In the middle of a beatdown on chilly Friday in pads, where positioning and angles are everything (morale and injuries are also considered), folks want to wonder if a school with an average recruiting rank of 25 has a *definitively* lower athleticism level/team speed level than a school who lost to an FCS school and ranks around 50 in recruiting most years?

When you get your butt whooped on occassion, it doesn't mean the whole basket of eggs is cracked.

P.S. Does Michigan need to have this conversation? Peppers did absolutely nothing against Iowa, and he has no legitimate excuses that I can see.

I think the LB's we are bringing in will be better suited. I'd settle for "better nose for the ball" if we can't get "faster" and "better nose for the ball".

They got good ol' fashioned cut back on. Back side wasn't staying home well enough.

Remember that Colorado game when they ran counter and it was like the defense didn't know it was legal to do that?

young looked awful. maybe he's still hurt? it was painful to watch.
Young was limping noticeably and looked like he shouldn't have been on the field. That long 4th down pick up was right in front of him and there was no way he could cover any ground to stop the receiver short. That wasn't lost on Beathard.
