Spring QB question regarding Tyler Russell.

I have to admit outside of reading the stats and key highlights, I have not been reading a lot about the scrimmages so far. I've heard that Russell is locating Malcolm Johnson a lot, which excites me. I have seen Morrow mentioned quite a few times, and really hope he gives us that field stretching ability. Now for my question....

Is there anything to the INT's Russell has been throwing so far? I know it's scrimmages so I'm not utterly concerned at this point, but it seems like every time I read stats he has thrown 2 or 3 picks, and only completed around 50% of his passes....sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less. What gives? I constantly hear Russell is looking good but the stats don't seem to really support that. Is it the defense just being stout, or are those picks something to keep an eye on? Can someone give me a run down, and how has Morrow looked overall? Should we expect him to factor In much this year, or is it still too early to tell. Thanks in advance

because he is able to make every throw you need him to. I have noticed that a lot of his interceptions have had the caveat of the ball being tipped/bouncing off of the WR. I almost wonder if he doesn't purposefully make the more difficult throws in practice to see what he is and isn't capable of. I would expect some throws he makes in practice he would check down in a game situation.

The defense deserves credit though for creating turnovers. I will not be shocked to see our defense be one of the top defenses in the conference next year. We have incredible depth, but most importantly, 7 of the 11 starters will be in at least their 4th year of the program. To have 7 senior-level players as starters on defense bodes well for us.

I haven't been to practices, so can't comment on how Russell looks. But until it happens, no one will ever convince me that we can have a QB that puts up legit passing stats. Complete over 60%, 2400+ yards (average 200ypg), 20+ TDs, better than 2:1 TD to INT ratio... I really hope Russell is that guy but I'm convinced I'll never see those kinds of stats at MSU.

is getting better and better which is what you want to see. I expect him to be a solid QB this year if he can avoid injury and I expect his Senior year to be even<div>better. I agree with the other poster that our defense has the potential to be special. Interceptions are part of the territory when it comes to being a QB, the key is to</div><div>throw a lot more TD's than you do interceptions and be around 55 to 60% on completions and don't throw interceptions at critical points that will get you beat, like a pick</div><div>six late in a close game. When you take chances you are going to throw some interceptions and that is not necessarily a bad sign.</div>

You also have to remember that our defense faces Tyler everyday in practice and instinctively knows his and our receivers tendencies. I agree that Tyler maybe forces some balls in practice that he wouldn't throw in a game, but our defense most likely jumps a lot of routes due to their familiarity and ability to read the players involved and the route because they see it everyday.

Not only did he have all three the other night, he gets like 90% of them overall. Also, a significant portion of them come on one-on-one coverage where Arceto Clark is the intended receiver and Slay just dominates the play. For instance, the second pick the other night was a deep ball where Arceto smoked Slay on the move, but thenSlay ran him down and picked it off when the ball bounced off Arceto's chest. Probably half of the interceptions overall this spring have been a similar situation.<div>
</div><div>I say all that to say this: Tyler would have a lot less interceptions if he would avoid Darius Slay. It's not that he's throwing into multi-man coverage and getting picked, it's that he's going for a one-on-one matchup and either missing the throw (first pick the other night was like that) or Slay just makes a spectacular play.</div><div>
</div><div>On a related note: with Darius Slay and Johnthan Banks we might have the best two cornerbacks we've ever had.</div>

Watched the scrimmage this weekend. Tyler looked LEAPS & BOUNDS better than (not only Dak) but better than he did this same time last year. You can't look at Tyler if he throws to a crossing Arceto & he bobbles the ball RIGHT into Slay's gut. That's not on the QB. Plus when PJ came in to replace Boyd. He was almost UNBLOCKABLE! He was ALL OVER Dak & Tyler when he was in the game. And the other pick that Tyler threw he had PJ right in his face when he let it go as he was throwing outside. He needed to eat that one though. But as soon as the ball is snapped he had pressure EVERYWHERE! The NT (Curtis, Quay) were staying home to prevent him from stepping up. But I tjought Tyler actually looked good. I know he threw 2 INTs. But he also hit some mice passes that were fumbled that WOULD'VE turned into points (possibly).

Of course that was 1978 and he nearly beat ala. On one leg at Tuscaloosa I believe. I was there and it was fun to watch. But your point is valid. That was 34 years ago. But it has happen.... Just sayin!
