I'm looking at taking the kids on a scenic trip this month. Has anyone ever driven to the summit of Spruce Knob? If so, where is the turnoff from the highway? How long does it take to get to the top? And is it paved?

I plan on doing Cass, Spruce Knob, and Seneca Rocks.

Thanks for the information.

Happy 4th!

Google maps is your friend, and I hope you aren't going to try to do all three of those in the same day. From the Elkins side it may be a one hour drive from the time you leave US 33 to the top of Spruce Knob. The ride down the other side of the mountain is much shorter but steeper and comes out just a few miles from Seneca Rocks.

Cass is worthy of an entire day, especially if you take the long ride to the top of Bald Knob. If you take the shorter ride to Whittaker Station then depending on the time of day you finish there still may be time to tour the radio observatory at Green Bank.

Take two days to get it all in and you won't regret the time spent.

I should have explained better. The Seneca and Spruce would be a day and Cass another day.

I've checked the google maps. I didn't know if any locals had better ways to go.

I watched some YouTube videos of people driving up to the lookout. The road appears paved.

If you go in from the east (Riverton/Judy Gap), the road is paved. If you go in from the north (Harman/Whitmer), it's partially paved and graded gravel.

There are some hiking trail closures at Seneca Rocks right now due to forest fire.

Man, if ya got time hike down Seneca creek trail to the falls, great campsites and the native rainbows are very very plentiful. Probably one of my favorite trails in all of WV.
