SPS First Annual Bowl Tickets for Charity *Update 12/19 9:34 PM

**Update 12/19 9:34 PM - We're at $1,255 and 3 tickets raised so far. Keep the donations coming in. You've got until 2 PM tomorrow! Thanks everyone for making this awesome.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As you guys are probably aware, the board has rallied behind an idea to provide someone a little less fortunate to watch MSU play in the bowl game in Memphis. I'm going to lead up the charge this year on collecting donations and making this happen.

Here's what I'm doing:

- From now until Friday at 2 PM (central time), I will be collecting donations through my paypal at [email protected]. When you send your money over, please select "sending money to family and friends" so paypal does not take a fee out for the transaction. Also, include your SPS username in the notes and I will compile a list of all the donors. When I publicize this list, I won't include donation amounts. If you prefer NOT to be recognized, just place anonymous there.

- On Friday, I will count all the donations and figure out the best way to allocate them between tickets and MSU gear (t-shirts, cowbells, etc...). I'd like to provide one "goodie" for the each ticket.

- DS will be in charge of the "goodies" since he has better access to that stuff in Mississippi. Once we decide how to divvy up the funds, I'll paypal him the money to cover those expenses and the rest will go to tickets.

- In the time between now and Friday, I will begin researching charities in the Memphis area that would be a good fit for this. My target audience will be children, first and foremost. I plan on starting with the hospitals, but if I can't get any gaurantee that the child will have his/her butt in the seat for the game, then I will move onto orphanages. If you have contacts that you'd like me to use for these, please DM me that information.

I'm really looking forward to turning this into an SPS tradition for a couple of reasons:
1) We get to do something awesome for someone who may need a pick-me-up. There's nothing better than helping someone who needs it.
2) Doing this means we went to a bowl game. And that's pretty awesome.

Looking forward to this.

This is just awesome. What started out with a dbag stiffing you on 4 tickets has now ended end with a bunch of people sending some very deserving children to a bowl game. Awesome

I'm in. We should do this once a year for a home game as well (in case we don't make a bowl we can keep the tradition alive), those tickets would be easy to come by. Possibly get a hotel to donate a night or two for a family, restaurants donate meals for the weekend, The Lodge donate some gear, autograph swag from athletic dept, walk w/ the team during The Dog Walk, etc Six Pack could become the Chive Charities of the Sports Message Boards

Got it stickied. Sorry, I was in a meeting when you posted otherwise I would have done it sooner.

Note about Paypal:

If you don't have your bank account tied to Paypal and instead only have your credit card (this is what I do), then you will have to pay a very small fee for the transaction. It will be added on top of the donation rather than the donation being reduced. I believe it is a 3.5% fee. So on a $50 donation it would actually cost $51.75.

If you have your checking account attached to Paypal, then the transaction has no charge.

Might could also consider working with a charity associated with the football team. I guess there is the Nick Bell Foundation and Mullen has his own - Mullen 36 Foundation.

May not have time to set something like that up this year but maybe a cool idea going forward.

We have a group called Passionate Pursuit Ministries that does a great deal of handicapped hunts. Once a year we take the kids from Palmer Home and Sally Kate Winter's Home (West Point) out hunting. The smiles on those faces are a huge blessing. No doubt a trip to a football game would be HUGE!! Great ideas from all though.

If my math is right, we're

off to a $590 start for the fundraising. Amazing work by you guys. Keep the donations rolling in.

I have a contact now to someone at St. Jude's and I am going to try and call them tomorrow. We are thinking a cowbell and a MSU toboggan to go along with a ticket. We think each package consisting of the cowbell, toboggan and ticket would be about $100. So for every $100, that's how many tickets and goodies we can put together.

Youth Villages sounds like they may meet your criteria:

http://www.youthvillages.org

If that doesn't work, my church has several urban outreach ministries that we work with that would really appreciate something like this. They help in what once were some if the toughest communities in Memphis including Orange Mound and Binghampton. Feel free to reach out if you are interested in more info.

I'm open to anything. The one thing I was worried about St. Jude's is - are those children up to sitting out in possible chilly weather for a football game.

Agree on St. Jude. My own kids aren't going for that reason and they are healthy.

I'll send a couple if emails out. I think we can find something that fits what you are looking for.

A friend of mine worked at Le Bonheur this whole past semester as one of those people who helps kids acclimated socially and stay up academically during long stays at the hospital (part of her degree requirements). She'd know firsthand who should get the tickets and how to get the tickets to those people. I'd love to point the two of you together if you'd like.

St. Jude's is great, but I feel like Le Bonheur gets overlooked.

Bump

About 45 minutes left before I close off donations.

I'll spend the rest of the afternoon doing some work for this and will provide an update. Doubt we have all the details finalized today, but will work my best at doing so.

Anyway we can extend the deadline to tomorrow morning? I just got paid today and I'm not home/near a computer to do paypal.

The life of a recent grad working a job that doesn't require a degree.

Due to the fact that I'll have to ship tickets, I'm ending the donations in about 5 minutes. We've had a very generous group of people here who've done great.

Sorry we can't accommodate you this year, but look out next year as I hope the board does this again.
