So a school that has extra challenges in getting the type of players to compete at a high level is going to bring in a coach with no experience even dealing with normal challenges of college coaching. Makes a lot of sense if it isn't an April Fool's joke. [eyeroll]

@Friedas_Boss what's up with this hire?

Heard about this a little over a week ago and it's an interesting one for sure. G League Coach of the Year, was in line for an NBA head coaching gig, is apparently a really good young coach.

Questions:

-Can he recruit? My gut is he will kill it on the recruiting trail. He has AAU experience (not sure what, just read that). He has major name recognition with every parent of kids he'll be recruiting. 15 plus years in the NBA, All Star in NBA, tons of NBA connections. He should be able to sell VU hoops.

-Can he coach? We shall see. Early reports are that his teams are tough and physical and nobody wants to play them.

-Can he assemble a staff? This is key to me.

It's a splash hire, very polarizing and most will talk about it. Some think it's genius, some think it's stupid.

I'm all in. I've made it this far in life and I'm still a Vandy fan, so I'm not quitting now.

Much better than JTIII and Dawkins to me.

I think we will know pretty quickly if this is going to work or not.

My god if that's true what an awful hire for the Commies. He won't last 3 years there.

Out of the loop on his coaching acumen, but Stackhouse could ball! Is he older than Vince Carter (speaking of NBA careers)?

What came first, the Stackhouse, or the Carter? Save Google lol.
Stackhouse and Rasheed Wallace with help from the refs beat us in the 1995 elite 8. Vince Carter and Antawn Jamison had the best team in basketball during the 1998 season, there were 4 ridiculously stacked teams and they were prolly the best. Thank goodness for Utah upsetting them in the Final Four.

A strange choice.

No college experience (even as an assistant) in his life.
No recruiting experience in his life.
No head coaching experience at ANY level his level.
Had a reputation for a short-tempered hothead personality as a player.

What could possibly go wrong here?

A typical hire for Vanderbilt.

Wow! Thanks Keyser! Those were some great duos, for sure. Kinda reminds me of Z/ Barrett. Neither team won the ‘ship correct? I only ask because neither did K’s Dynamic Duo lol.

By the way how is Frieda doing these days?
Is she still employed?
Did you give her a big raise?
I guess you will say none of my business.:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Couldn’t stand him when he was a player for UNC. Hope we beat them bad next year!

I actually like it for them.

He’s played every role. He was one of the top recruits in the country. He’s been the next big thing, the young guy with the potential, the All-star. He was a good scorer for several seasons. He held on for years as a journey man making 3’s.

He’ll resonate with all players regardless of role/ranking.

Stackhouse and Rasheed Wallace with help from the refs beat us in the 1995 elite 8.

That game was INFURIATING. For those too young to remember, here's the context: we were the hottest team in the country at the time and the 1 seed, everything rolling, but then, when facing 2 seed UNC in the Elite 8, EVERYTHING changed after this incident:

In short, Wallace viciously cheap shots Riddick with an elbow to the head. The refs inexplicably assess an unsportsmanlike technical to TOTALLY the wrong guy, Walter McCarty (who had NOTHING whatsoever to do with the incident), the refs ignore us when we correctly explain they got the wrong guy, UNC gets away with awful ********, we get unjustly punished, then we get rattled, the momentum and game then shifts to them and UNC heads to the Final Four instead of UK.

Lord, do I ever hate UNC, so much more than anyone else for reasons that go back so many years.

The worst part is after getting the call wrong, they went to the monitor, reviewed the play, and still got the call wrong. Called a technical on a dude being a peacemaker and separating players.

Penny and Jerry should just square off one on one instead of having their teams play. Winner takes the trophy for 2nd best team in the state of Tennessee, behind...

So Vandy is hiring a UCheats graduate who’s degree is in African American Studies? Wonder if he wrote any of his own papers for those “paper classes.”

I guess academic integrity doesn’t matter even at Vanderbilt when it comes to athletics.

In order for Vandy to have a chance at catching lightning in a bottle I actually like this hire. Kind of out of left field. And if he wins, like, 1 SEC game he is a freaking legend. Pretty much the only time you’ll be able to make this kind of hire.

Why not?

This isn’t football, big tuna.

Stack will need to take us to the NCAAT on the regular to be considered a success.

Maybe for some. But he has a recognizable name. That alone should inject a little energy. Stack (lol) a few wins up in his first season, one that follows a complete disaster, and I think he can buy a few years before that kind of expectation will be placed upon him by the masses.

Gotcha. You’re just saying compared to last year. For me, I need to know what the roster looks like to determine what he should do in year 1. I need to see how he coaches and recruits.

I think we’ll know pretty quick if he can cut it or not. I was not happy about JTIII, moderately ok without Dawkins, but am genuinely exited about Stackhouse.

If nothing else, it’s extremely interesting.

Maybe he recruits his butt of, sells his NBA experience, and proves to be an adequate coach. Can't be any worse than 0-18 in the SEC. I don't say that to be a jerk either, my point is...what do you have to lose by taking the risk?

As I said before, high risk high reward.
