@PSUFTG

Barry, does the President have the authority to ok an honorary naming when no monetary donation is involved? In other words, if Neeli decided to (and I realize she previously said no to naming the field for Joe last year), could she make that happen without BOT approval?
Thanks.

She answers to them.

Watch the presentation to keep me honest, but from my recollection...PSU utilized an outside consultant to get an estimate of what the naming rights to the field might be worth. We were given a figure of $28 million (if I recall). Taking this offer of $50 million meant that it was almost twice of market value, and no one else was getting a cut of it (I'm sure if it goes through an RFP, a search firm is getting a nice chunk of the cash). From that standpoint, it does make sense as to why some would want to move forward (not saying that it was the right decision to, but just adding that context).
So Erial....if the alumni had been included and asked to donate toward naming the field for Joe....with only half of the Alumni base each donating $167 total over the 15 year period (or $12 per year..or $1 per month!) you equal your $50,000,000. Market value is subjective....no sense in discussing this as the BOT probably didn't even THINK that this was a means to unify the Alumni base which is fragmented. I agree this was done to silence the "Name the Field for Joe" crowd. If not...this was a poorly conceived and achieved endeavor. Kind of funny that Joe himself probably raised OVER $50,000,000 for the school himself!

You're not living in reality if you think that half of the Alumni base would be donating to that. I'm a huge Joe fan and extremely engaged in PSU football, and I wouldn't plan on contributing.

And you think that someone like Carl Nassib voted against it simply to spite Joe Paterno, not because he thought it made financial sense to do so? I'm far from a fan of our current BOT, but stuff like the conspiracy theories over Joe just leads to the narrative that we're a cult. They did this because we've got a crap ton of $$$ that we owe for this stadium renovation, and they need to find a way to cover the checks that they're writing.

They’ve had 15 years to put this sort of campaign together. What have they been waiting for?

And count me as another alumnus who would never, ever consider donating $1 towards such an endeavor.

Several sources online reported this and there in lies my confusion. If it is a 15 year deal with $1 mil/yr first 10 years, does that mean the $40 mil left gets paid out over the last 5 yrs? I don’t see a lot of clarity with the actual specifics. It’s 15 years so Kraft was misheard in laying out the specifics. 15 vs 50 is a huge difference.
Link?

Enough of your cult BS.....Name me someone who did more for PSU? What year did you graduate? That is where the true divide lives. I am not afraid of the lies and innuendo others say...that occurs in every organization. I just do not buy your theory that this offer was the only offer possible. You say they asked a few people...who?
And yes I believe getting 300,000 alumni to spend $12 per YEAR. after watching what is given annually for THON is quite doable.
As for Carl...that is his perogative.

The portion of the "alumni base" supporting this, especially to the point where they are willing to donate money toward this end, is MUCH smaller than half of all alums. Probably closer to 1% than 50%. And a good portion of those <1% probably aren't going to be around in 15 years.

It doesn't even make sense, regardless. They could rename it for free, if they wanted. What's the selling point ... "hey we could sell the naming rights and have someone else enrich the university, or we could rename it for free ... but instead ... we want to make YOU pay for what we could do for free!" And we'll do this while we search for other revenue streams to fund the facilities improvements, too.

I humbly submit what, in my opinion, would be a subtle and appropriate way to honor Joe. Somewhere, on the outside of the stadium, perhaps above where all the memorial bricks have been placed, should be Joe’s quote: “Success With Honor” with JVP under it.

Ludicrous. Didn’t say that I hated Joe. But my affection is directed more towards Penn State than it is towards Joe Paterno. I don’t think that’s something bad. My degree will say Penn State forever, but it will never say that I went to Joe Paterno University.

I do not believe the football field should be named after him and would have no interest in donating money towards that goal. I would oppose it and would believe that it is an bad idea for Penn State. I think the various honors that Penn State has bestowed upon him - such as the library and the fellowship program - are more than sufficient. I’m also fine with the recreation of his office in the sports museum, and I hope the family reconsiders.

Didn't Joe and Sue make "significant" financial contributions to the library and the fellowship program? I think you are confused. They "bestowed" their contributions upon Penn State. Not the other way around. I find it interesting that some like to look at this as purely a financial decision....seemingly forgetting the millions of dollars Joe raised for various projects at the university throughout his career. Perhaps the field should be "what have you done for me lately field? "

I think the thing no one wants to talk about is, in general, there is no way to walk back the damage and connection between JVP and the whole horrible JS topic. In my opinon the only thing that can walk this back is if a good portion of the paid off accusers recanted their testimony and admit they really lied for the money. There is what is "right" and what is "realistic". If the BOT went ahead and named the field for our beloved HC can you imagine the shiitshow that would reemerge? We would be right back to where we were in 2011/12. Now, i do believe the BOT has no desire to honor JVP becasue they are strictly focused on $$, and that is what is driving them. To them, any attempt to honor JVP will bring down heat they are too weak to fight through. In the end, i just don't see any way to undo the damage that was done to an amazing man. Add to that the fact that the Paterno family felt their best option was to settle the lawsuit and take a deal. It sucks but JVP must live on in our hearts and minds... at least for the foreseeable future

“What have you done for me lately”?

I certainly remember the last significant thing that Joe Paterno and his cohort did for the university before his death. Do you? How sure are you that that’s a game that you want to play?

Well done. I understand the "horns of the dilemma." What I find most troubling, is "the BOT has no desire to honor JVP." Expecting people on the periphery of the "scandal," to know the whole story is unrealistic. But, for a trustee to pretend Joe brought this on PSU is astounding. His contributions could be remembered in and around the stadium in ways that would only resonate with those of us who lived thru that wonderful era.

I went to PSU. Got a varsity letter there. Didn't play football, but knew some football players well. I didn't go there for JoePa, or even for sports. I went for a comparatively cheap, quality education (University Scholars program ... now, Schreyer Honors College) because I lived in PA. Football was a fun entertainment option ... an excuse to party, socialize and drink ... and yell at/for some dudes running around with a ball, smashing into other dudes. JoePa was a good coach ... seemed like a good guy. Stayed on too long. Got caught up in a huge scandal, and may have been completely not at fault, or may have been in a position to do something more and didn't - of either option, I'll never be certain. But even if he was completely squeaky clean in the scandal, and had gone above and beyond in addressing it, whether or not there is a statue of him, or a building/field/what-have-you renaming in his honor ... just not a big deal to me. I don't hero worship. And if I did, it wouldn't be over a college football coach, unless that guy performed actual amazing feats, like curing cancer or solving world hunger, and otherwise led a life of unquestionable virtue. I like PSU because it was a springboard to a fantastic life, not because some tiny Italian football coach tried to get his meathead players to study more.

I thought the primary narrative pushed by the JoeBot cult was that PSU was lacking funds because they wouldn't succumb to the ransom demands of "honor Joe in X, Y and Z fashion or you'll never see your precious money again."

Now it's that PSU won't honor him because they're chasing money?

I went to PSU. Got a varsity letter there.
Why the need to share the varsity letter thingy as part of your post? That's rather strange. Your post would have been fine without that incremental info share.

That said, why just one varsity letter? Did something happen? Did Joe Paterno get you booted from PSU such that you're now a disgruntled almost-graduate? Your chosen language "I went to PSU" is a dead giveaway.

So which community college is your real alma mater?

I like it. Those that feel inclined should start a fundraising campaign to do just that. If the enthusiasm to honor Joe has as much momentum as some think, this should be a slam dunk.

That's not what I wrote meathead... I figured someone with a varsity letter would have higher ability to understand words grouped together into sentences. I clearly said, in my opinion, they won't honor Joe because they can't take the heat. Grabbing the $50m is a by product of the need to pay for the stadium. There are many ways to honor JVP than naming field after him.

I say start a fundraising campaign to rename Beaver Stadium to Paterno Stadium. If naming the field after Joe would have brought in $100 million as some claim, then shouldn't naming the stadium after him bring in an order of magnitude more?

I attended my first game at Beaver Stadium in1966.I remember what it looked like. How did "we" get to the current version of Beaver Stadium? Please explain it to me omitting Joe.
We would not, and I saw my first game December 7, 1968. Lions 30 Orange 12.
Ohio Stadium sits in the largest city in Ohio. 100K is not a problem. AnnArbor is a ***** is 43 Miles and has a metropolitan are of 5.3M. Filling UM Stadium is easy.
State College has a metropolitan area of 157,000+. It was difficult to fill that place until it wasn’t. The program hustled it’s *** off all over the Commonwealth. It’s a destination on Saturdays. What made it so? A great team, great schedules, wonderful PA athletes, i haven’t quite put my finger what made 106,000+ make their way to Happy Valley. I’ll figure it out.

I ignored the gross portion of your original post where you allege Sandusky's innocence, and the guilt of the victims ... and I went to the portion where you said "Now, i do believe the BOT has no desire to honor JVP becasue they are strictly focused on $$, and that is what is driving them. To them, any attempt to honor JVP will bring down heat they are too weak to fight through."

This necessarily implies that, if they were to honor JVP, the $$ would not be there. But, every time university funding issues come up on this board, the Joebots chime in to let us know that there would be money, if the BoT just made it right re the JoePa situation (exonerate and exalt), and they make sure we know they aren't contributing due to their displeasure with how the situation is being handled.

But now you're suggesting the trustees don't want the heat, and they want the money, so they won't rattle any cages by doing the "right" thing (in your opinion, and those of other Joebots) ... ergo, the "heat" and the "money" are inversely related.

So, my comments were entirely correct, based off your original commentary, and I'm not sure why you had issues with my reading of it. Lucky for me, I'm quite adept at "understand[ing] words grouped together into sentences."

I understand the younger generation distancing from Joe. It's inevitable. However, IMO, those who lived thru his tenure and don't see the problem with scrubbing him from the program are hard to comprehend.

“We have options that could bring in significantly more revenue that would have allowed us to show respect for our alums and our fans…to show respect for their concerns and their wishes and to build goodwill with all those folks,” trustee Barry Fenchak said.

“That goodwill you build up that leads to more revenue moving forward…and of course the opportunity to do the right thing by Joe and Sue Paterno.” Fenchak added that by approving Monday’s proposal, Penn State missed out on the opportunity to find better revenue streams, both from a Paterno Field proposal or other means.

When Fenchak raised his concerns to the full board, Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Pat Kraft said that the West Shore Home proposal was what the administration had to offer. “We chose one that provided less money, and all those other things got kicked to the curb,” Fenchak said. “I don’t think it’s in the best interests of the university.”

What is the value of making it an ethical decision or whatever you want to call it? Is it worth forgoing $10, $1,000, $1,000,000, $15,000,000, … to do the “right” thing in your eyes (oh, and it’s not universally accepted to be the right thing). Please, put a number on it.

What value is there in having ethics? I can't answer that for you. I think you've answered that. There used to be a joke with the punchline...."we've already established what you are, we're just haggling over the price."
Again, people don't seem to read and comprehend. I don't necessarily have an issue with naming rights as much as I am saddened by the purposeful scrubbing of Joe from the history of the program. There are many ways his contributions could be recognized properly.
No one is responding to my question. How did Beaver Stadium get from it's 1966 version to today? I'd love for someone to tell me it had nothing to do with Joe.
