I thought this thread was going to be about how exhausted the band was. I mean they are having to play an awful lot today.

They are a completely student-led band and live off of being edgy and irreverent. Take a look at their Wikipedia page-there's a long list of controversies they've been involved in. There are a few other schools that have similar bands-the University of Virginia used to have one but they were banned permanently by the school from athletic events after controversy over a show they did mocking West Virginia at a bowl game where they were playing WVU. They then started a traditional marching band run by the school.

I don't know how the band gets away with mocking others the way they do at super liberal Stanford. What with all the talk of "safe places" and "trigger warnings" for even mild forms of so-called "hate speech" on liberal campuses, it is odd that they let this continue. I have no problem with it whatsoever. It is funny. But I don't get the double standard and hypocrisy of Stanford on the issue of insensitive and offensive speech.

I mean, you are talking about a university that thinks it is horrible bigotry to have gender specific bathrooms.

I assume Cowherd is going to let Iowa have it with both barrels on his next show as well. I know they came down on him pretty hard, but after their last two games it looks like he was right about them. That has to sting, and I imagine his ratings in Iowa won't be real high next week, as they know what's coming after all the grief they gave him.

I still can't believe we lost to Iowa. I was at that game and man it was cold! So here is an observation for what it is worth: Armstrong's two worst games were against Illinois and Iowa. In fact, I think he cost us both games. Yes, yes the play calling against Illinois was awful. But the fact remains that Armstrong was terrible that day. My point? Both of those games were played in truly wretched weather. I wonder if it is not the case then that TA is a terrible bad weather QB??

It is a double standard. They have the same kind of band at Yale. Once at West Point they were set to perform at halftime a particular rendition that made fun of some West Point grads. Army officials nixed it minutes before going on. At Holy Cross many of the members dropped their pants. Against UConn they would break out a chant saying that, though the Huskies may win the game, someday they would be working for us. Irreverent? Yes. Funny? Sometimes. A so-called "safe place"? No...but it's a stinking university. It's a place meant to challenge your sensitivities...open your eyes to different points of view...offend you at times.

Banning views with which you don't agree is the height of hypocrisy in a supposedly open and free society.

P.S. Shame on ESPN for cutting short the Stanford band. However, a much bigger shame to universities like Stanford, Yale, Missouri, and the like who cater to the whims of those wanting "safe places" instead of the open exchange of ideas.

I think this is a good point... Coaches in the past have said Tommy has had a problem with not moving on to the next play or getting down on himself, correct?... I think it's very likely that similarly the cold weather gets in Tommy's head too. Hopefully having a coach that sets a better example of what true mental toughness is will help Tommy.

I agree, but Stanford isn't really a liberal campus, and not just by California standards, it's probably the least left leaning elite university in the country (unless you include the service academies). If there are people who want to ban "hate speech" from a campus but are fine with mocking the Irish Potato Famine, then that's obviously hypocrisy. By the same token, someone in Iowa who thinks the Stanford band should be disbanded but then complains about PC orthodoxy is also a hypocrite. Find something to make fun of California with, like earthquakes or drought or massive budget deficits.

Why on Earth would anyone make fun of a dating site that has boatloads of smokin' hot women lined up to meet guys who haven't taken a bath since October?

Wait - you mean those TV ads aren't true???

While there are certainly many liberals on campus, the Hoover Institution sits in the middle of campus and is about as right wing as you can get. I spent about a month at Stanford at an institute years ago and it was unforgettable. It is an amazing campus, formerly a horse farm hobby of Leland Stanford. If you are ever in the area, take in the amazing Cantor Arts Center at Stanford -- and it's free.

California under Gov. Jerry Brown now has a budget surplus.

it was funny but in poor taste

the Rose Bowl board is so stuffy and tradition focused (similar to Augusta national golf club) I am surprised they haven't banned the Stanford band

You could always play up Stockton or Fresno. San Bernardino County and Kern County are crap holes (though it might be too soon to mock San Bernardino). There are areas of the North Bay that are super trashy. There's always Yolo County, if ever a place was worthy of mockery that would be it.

1. Got tired of that Zany Stanford Band act many years ago.
2. If Iowa fans can't take a little ribbing by said Zany Band, too bad for them.

You can't paint all of San Bernardino County with a broad brush. While it is true most of the largest county in the US is the pits, there is a lot of wealth in Chino Hills, Rancho Cucamonga, Redlands, Loma Linda, and in the mountains around the Big Bear Area.

Leland Stanford one of the great robber barons of the last century was the son of a farmer who founded Stanford as an agricultural college. The band ( oh those wacky kiddos ) were banned from traveling with the team this year. Holstein are dairy cows of which Ca has far more then Iowa. The little performance was a middle finger to the admin at Stanford for not letting the infants off campus. People who have to tell me how edgy and funny they are usually one hand clapping. This is the 3rd year in a row they have done this instead of edgy they are predictable.

Lost to Iowa because we couldn't run on their front four, Riley clearly didn't want TA to run, so the Iowa defense simply said - 'throw as much as you want into our 7 man coverages'. It's really quite simple. Iowa wasn't as bad as they looked against Stanford(and Stanford was really good)...just one of those days. Certainly some will disagree, and it will probably be those that think a rivalry with Iowa is beneath the Huskers despite taking the most enjoyment in their loss. IMO Iowa and Nebraska will be picked to finish 1-2 or 2-1 in the West next year....and they will be a very, very hard team to beat, and we might not.

As for the Stanford band- just go away. That band, like shock jocks, some on twitter, some on here.... think being a belligerent, offensive, and an intentional troll makes one funny and witty, and that people actually care what they spew. They might get a reaction, but they are irrelevant....and don't fully understand it.

I thought their show was hilarious, and I will take something like that over a "normal" marching band that everyone gets up to use the restroom for any day of the week. Marching bands can be boring as hell and I appreciate what the Stanford band does.

Most of the time they are funny. However, in the Fiesta Bowl a few years ago against OSU some part of their act supposedly mimed a plane crash. A few weeks before that OSU had a plane crash where their women's basketball coach and another person were killed. It was huge news here in Oklahoma. I know a lot of fans were incredibly upset with the band that night. Also that night, much of the trophy presentation for OSU was ruined because the Stanford Band kept playing as the presentation was happening.

We always have to make this a Liberal vs. Conservative thing. Those hippie Stanford students made fun of farmers when they know nothing about farming! With their mary-jane, turkey burgers and Angelina Jolies! Even if ESPN didn't cut them off, I'd still use that time to take a dump.

I think it's great. However, I think you'd be able to hear the screaming all the way from the left coast if the Iowa band had gone on that field and portrayed some "things" that California is famous for.
