Need help with another one. Late 2000's/early 2010s. Can't remember the guys name, but I think we've discussed him on here some time ago....
There was a guy who always walked up and down highway 12. Black guy, slicked back hair, had horse teeth. He'd do wrestling moves up and down the highway and commentate loudly. Loved doing the Stone Cold Stunner. He busted in Taco Bell one night doing a whole wrestling routine and no one even blinked. Help me out here @Brian Hadad
Youre talking about Cecil "The Snake" Riley. HUGE wrestling fan. He loved doing his wrestling routine for people. He worked at the Ability Works in Starkville at one point. I heard he passed away in the early 2010s.

This is just one Devil's opinion, but I myself was a Dave's regular from about 05 to 10 when I was not hard at work with my studies, of course. I ran into Gerald several times, and always thought he was a complete and total *******. Three things that stuck in particular were one of him asking me to buy him beers, and you're just like dude get a 17ing job like everyone else. Two, he was such a dick about his seat which I get a bar letting you do that if you are a high-paying customer, but not some old loser who can't pay for his own beers. Third, and this pissed me off more than anything, he would take pictures of the girls that you were with, and if they did not want him to he would be creepy about it, and do it anyway. I almost whipped his old *** over it one night at Dave's, and had it not been for George (bar tender) stopping me I would have.

I already know the Gerald apologists, or people that had positive interactions with him will roast my take. I would say my take is based on personal experiences with the old man. I am not just trying to hate on him.

Everything you said about him is true and I saw him rub people the wrong way on more than one occasion... especially about his seat at Daves. I think many of us thought it was entertaining or at least sort of liked the idea of having a "homeless" aquaintence wandering in and out of the bars and houses. He was like some sort of random, weird or interesting side character to A LOT of peoples stories when they were out in Starkville, to the point that we're all here discussing him years after he's gone.

Wesley Morgan. I took public speaking with Wesley. Fun fact, his parents and siblings are all short.
Wesley Morgan and Marcus Campbell gave me a keg stand at a house party after the 2003 egg bowl *** kicking (in the rain if I remember correctly). I was only 17 at the time and was in town visiting my cousins who were at state. The party was a brick house on the corner of 182/montgomery… across from a BP gas station I think. I knew then that I was going to enjoy college.

He taught photography at State. I took his class one year with Mario Haggan and that skinny white 7'0 basketball player Wesley something or another.

This was at the turn of the century and digital cameras were just becoming attainable. I used film though, because it was much better. We'd develop our film and scan the negatives in this little holder that would go in the scanner. Gerald would lean down real close to get the negative in the holder and clamp his beard into it every damn time.

Good dude, definitely a narcoleptic and a barfly of the 10th order.
I was in Gerald’s class about 10 years or so before you.

It’s pretty remarkable how many of us were there at the same time.

Anyone remember the Spivey twins (Keith and Kevin), late 90s, early 00s? Keith had one leg, I think from a motorcycle accident. Both dudes hung out at Dave’s or Flo & Eddys almost every night. I played in a band with Keith for a while, damn good bassist. Both were characters.
I worked at Barnett's Small Engines in Longview with them back when I was in high school (early 90s). They both still had all their legs back then. I think they lived out on New Light Road somewhere. I read water meters back then and know there were some spiveys on the route which was probably them. I do remember that they were in a band.

They're still around. Ran into Keith a couple of weeks back. They used to hustle pool at the Landing and the girls bartending were scared of them. Thought they were "rough looking characters". I didn't bother to tell them any different. I just told them that I would protect them. LOL Keith damn near made a girl faint out there one night when he snatched his leg off.

I was wondering if somebody was going to bring him up. I haven't seen him in a couple of years. I think the last time was over at the Subway on 182.
He has/had some type of health issue/physical aliment. I saw him leaving the Hump last MBB season (I think after we got molested by Missouri), he was barely able to walk. Hopefully, he's back in the Dude this season.

While we are speaking of Characters. How about the Omelette Lady at Perry Cafeteria. "Whatchu want?!?!"

The only the meaner than her was that bacon, onion, and pepper omelette she begrudgingly made me a few hundred times.

As a former member of the Longview Crew, the Spivey boys were harmless. In high-school they had a square body old Chevy truck they shoehorned a 454 big block in. Loudest vehicle at Starkville high, by far. They'd lay down rubber leaving every afternoon.

Murray Johnson was the Nelson Muntz of Longview for years. Fought him many times. Nearly succeeded in killing him with fireworks a few times. He did some federal time for robbery, and I saw where he died several years ago.

Charles Barnett, owner of the small engine shop, is apparently still around. Last time I talked to him, he was running for County Supervisor. He absolutely hated the county and city politicians, and was simply gonna make their life miserable. Good guy.

Old Man Sanders who owned a BP station on hwy 12 heading toward Longview was a character. No one dared trying to rob that store.

Also had the displeasure of going to school with the son of a former MSU, now super bowl coach, who shall remain unnamed. Complete spoiled entitled assshat. Kicker. A friend and I cornered him after he tried stealing his girl, and let's just say he moved on to greener pastures. Anywhere he was around, safe bet a fight may ensue.

Starkville High had an old fossil named Mrs. Lusk. She was there when my parents were there in the early 70s. The school dug a glorified mud hole and named it Lake Lusk after her. The Spivey twins and others (and possibly even me) would throw our cigarettes in Lake Lusk until the surface was nearly covered in floating cigarette butts. That old lady made us her pet project that year.

Gerald worked in the Communications Dept. I was pretty good friends with Bob Arnett, a film professor, through the mid 90s. Bob and Gerald were old Grill regulars and friendly.

In Bob's film class we watched 2001: A Space Odyssey. Gerald sat in the back, grumbling comments here and there that were lighthearted but mostly incoherent. When we turned on the lights after that long sequence with the monolith lightshow and the movie ended, Gerald was snoring in the back, head down on the desk. I never thought of him as narcoleptic. I just assumed he was always buzzed and drowsy.
I was in Bob’s film class too… likely a few years before you.

I don’t remember us seeing 2001 that semester… I think it may have been Easy Rider?

A few years later, I saw him on Southern Miss’s campus pretty often. He was working on his Ph.D while I was in grad school there…

I learned the best way to know which Spivey you were talking to was Kevin is two syllables two legs and Keith is one syllable one leg.
I always did it this way. Kevin looked like Jesus and Keith looked like Kirk Hammett. It's funny because I mentioned that to them and Keith said he had met Kirk Hammett and said he was the biggest A-hole he'd ever met.

Amen Guy is on a bicycle these days instead of the PT Cruiser. At least I’m pretty sure it’s him. Always has a tie and bicycle helmet on. Hangs out around Kroger a lot recently. He’s harmless, but annoying if he ever gets you cornered into a conversation.

Cecil was an absolute trip. I worked security at the hospital while I was in College and Cecil would come in almost every night just before visiting hours ended and try to “fight” us. Completely harmless, but scared the hell out of some patients.

Gerald was a weird sumb!tch and I wasn’t a fan for the same reasons as the devil mentioned above. The dude was get hammered and not take no for an answer when folks didn’t want a picture taken. Also, I just can’t stand a bum on principle.

Anybody remember a physics professor named David Roux? Nothing legendary but he walked in the first day and was wearing this long sleeve shirt that had roses and T-Rex’s on it, like my toddlers pajamas. He couldn’t remember was a rectangle was called and kept stammering something about a “parallelapallel”. One night he was in front of Hull, and it was very dark, and I was parked in my car. I saw him walk up to this bell and start fondling the clapper, like he’d never seen a bell before and was trying to figure out how it worked. I got out of my car and he took off. Not as much of an icon as these other guys but I’ve never forgotten that.

There was a guy around Starkville mid 2000’s, he drove a maroon PT cruiser that had banner M stickers ALL OVER IT. Usually wore a suit, hair was black as shoe polish and usually slicked back. He’d come up to you out in public and say something like “How bout them

That sounds about right. Those dudes had never ending stories and I never knew how much to believe. But they seemed like good guys. Crazy that it’s been over 20 years since I’ve been back.

Was her name Ms Ros? - whatchu want?! Philly and cheese?! The harder she scowled the better that damn sandwich was going to be even if it did have stuff you didn’t ask for in it - and I certainly wasn’t going to correct her

Yes, Ros. I think short for Rosalind? One time my friend, who was of Greek descent, asked her for a gyro (pronounced the correct way). She rolled her eyes and scowled “you mean ‘ji-ro’ ?”. He just said yes m’am and didn’t bother to correct her.

I guess we could add “the waver”. The guy who would sit in a chair in front of Lee Hall and wave at folks as they drove or walked by. He apparently started it as part of a project for a class. But it caught on, and a few others started sitting with him waving also.

Reverend Amen that drove around in the PT Cruiser and used to hangout at the old car wash that was torn down on hwy 12 and the guy that rides the bike wearing the helmet, sport coat and tie are not the same person. I know the name of the bike guy but he may want privacy. He worked at the University 20 years ago. Not sure now.

Im not sure what became of the reverend though.

I worked with their mom at one point and kinda got to know them through her. They were pretty cool guys and really good guitarists. In the early 2000s I ended up in storage building on Industrial Dr one night listening to them playing with the guy from Superstar Donkey Donkey and some other guys for a couple of hours. They were playing Led Zeppelin and Stones covers note for note. I know one of them played with Jason Miller band or someone like that at one point. I was told one them passed away but that may not be true.

Did my undergrad 1990-94 and masters through 96. I probably took that film class in 93.

We watched 2001, The Graduate, Easy Rider, and North By Northwest, as far as I can remember.

ETA: Now that I think about it, I only distinctly remember watching 2001 and North By Northwest in class. I remember having a big list of movies to watch. That was the first time I'd ever seen The Graduate and Annie Hall.

I remember the long list.

I took that class in Spring ‘89 and got my BA that May.

The movies shown in class went through different eras… Buster Keaton’s The General was one. I’m thinking Double Indemnity was another as well as Michael Mann’s Manhunter… seeing how Hannibal was portrayed before Silence of the Lambs was released….

I returned to grad school at State a couple years later and got my masters in ‘93. I occasionally ran into Bob then but saw him more at Southern Miss afterwards.

Yeah that’s where we used to practice. A bunch of bands shared rent on a storage space in the warehouses out there. If you saw Keith on bass, I was probably on drums. Fun memories. Ice chests full of cold beer and loud rock and roll.
