Starkville the city stymies progress yet again...

No one knows how to hinder the progress as a town like the residents and politicians in Starkville.

Currently, businesses cannot sell beer or light wine if it is located within 250 feet of the nearest point of any church, school, child care facility or funeral home. That distance is measured with a straight line, rather than routes of pedestrian travel.

The city proposes amending the rule to follow state statute, Miss. Code Ann. 67-1-51(3), which allows for sales beyond 100 feet of the premises, provided they are both zoned either commercial or industrial. Churches and funeral homes may also waive the distance requirements, the proposal states.

Due to the physical placement of churches and businesses in the Main Street, Russell Street and Miss. Highway 182 corridors, the potential change could unlock new retail opportunities, thereby increasing

Starkville's sales tax and 2 percent food and beverage tax receipts as the city continues branding itself as a restaurant destination for out-of-town diners.

It is crucial to secure the new alcohol ordinance, Maynard said, because incoming restaurants are expected to dot the Russell Street corridor.

Proposal would have allowed alcohol sales beyond 100 feet of churches, placing city rule in harmony with state code.

Just spoke with Ward 6 Alderman Roy A. Perkins. He says nixing the alcohol sales agenda item serves Starkville’s best interest.

The last two tweets are really what sticks in my crawl and it's not aimed at Perkins either. He is basically saying, if we even talk about this, our constituents are going to pitch fits and go full melt-down mode. Once again, the locals of Starkville make progress slow to a crawl. I just don't understand why they fight things good for town. Do they not understand that the vast majority of folks who would open these businesses would be MSU alums? Do they not understand that it will create more jobs in Starkville? Do they not understand more tax dollars that would be generated? Sometimes I feel like the locals of Starkville are like the townspeople in Footloose.

Blue laws are ridiculous all over the state. Starkville is a college town so it gets more media attention, but it's like this all over the state.

Because "avoiding the discussions" is what they want in politics. They can't win if they have to defend their position

Bingo

Because "avoiding the discussions" is what they want in politics. They can't win if they have to defend their position

That's what irritated me the most. What part of "let's avoid this conversation" is beneficial in any realm of society? Discussing pros and cons and making an intelligent decision seems like a no-brainer to me.

Never have a problem finding alcohol in Starkville. You have a leftwing mayor, what is he doing about it.

I'm sorry, not leftwing, he's progressive.

What a joke. He's a politician. His job is to talk about pros and cons of proposed policies. If he's against it, state your reasoning. That's obviously the case... He's against it. Just doesn't want to sack up and say so.

Who does this a-hole represent? What kind of people would vote for a politician that openly claims it's "the best resolution" because it avoids him having to do his job. Everybody should be calling their alderman and harassing them until they prove they fought to keep it on the agenda. What a joke.

Mean while in Tupelo the Mayor said today the council will vote tomorrow to extend serving alcohol to 1:00 AM 7 days a week. Says it will help pay for tornado clean up. Sneak that **** in while all the Baptist don't have cable TV to see the news or are to busy repairing their house to notice.

Here's our local alkeehol issue. Personally I think if you want to drink during a movie, get a DVD.

I cant remember going to a theater and not having a beer. I thought beer was sold at almost all theaters? Guess not. I always grab a beer and popcorn.

Stay home? Personally, I think if you want to eat a steak and have a glass of wine, cook a steak at home.

Personally, I find that if you want to watch a baseball game and drink beer, watch from home.

This can go all day.

Ward 6 Alderman Roy A. Perkins

Perkins was recently inducted into the Mississippi Municipal League Hall of Fame.

The Oktibbeha County native is now serving his sixth term on the Board of Aldermen.

Perkins is also in his second term as Vice Mayor of Starkville-a position given to him by his fellow board members.

Getting dinner or going to a ballgame are different than going to a movie. I'd explain that more in-depth, but you already know that.

Is it? They are social outings. If its the lack of interacting, then use the theatre/opera. Alcohol is flowing there too, without talking going on amongst viewers.
Only a couple of theatres around me sell beer and wine, but I don't think twice about the fact that they do. One of em also has a massive espresso machine and probably 50 different types of tea. They are trying to cater to everyone's beverage preferences. Their been and wine selection is pretty extensive and features local breweries. Its a whole culture thing.

Tupelo passed the extended drinking laws tonight 4-3. They made it public yesterday & voted today. Flew that **** in there under the radar and through the tornado debris with quickness.

From the Daily Journal
The issue of extending alcohol sales hasn’t appeared in public discussions more than a year, and council members opposed to the vote said the quick decision denies citizens an opportunity to voice their opinion on the issue.
