Here's a crazy idea I had to get into IU's head a little bit. What if we started C.T. Bradford on the mound with Pollo in the outfield. Decide in advance to pull CT after say, one inning, or the first base runner, or something. Then put him in the outfield and bring Pollo in for his standard 40 pitches.

It would show them a look that they weren't really prepared for, and I really don't see a downside unless somebody goes yard on CT's first pitch.

This probably offends the sensibilities of the baseball gods, or violates some unwritten rule, and I'm sure the first comment will be that it's bush league. **

But it'd be fun to watch.

I would say, no.

The biggest problem with that would be Pollo in CF. I know he can play some out there, but I would not want him patrolling that cavernous area in the biggest baseball game we have played in almost 30 years.

Rather put Renfroe on the mound and let him Nuke LaLoosh-it for a coupla batters

Or... we could stick to the formula that's won 49 times.

I have to admit, I've thought about that more than once. Wonder why he was never tried as a closer earlier in his career?

Probably because he's more valuable in RF. He is a power arm, no question, but he is a difference maker in the field, and you want his bat in the lineup, too.

I certainly am glad he was in RF for the last out Saturday rather than on the mound.

It would be easy to let him play RF for 8 innings and close in the 9th. Worked out pretty well for Bobby Thigpen in 85. With only 11.7 scholarships, we may have made a mistake by not letting a good pitcher pitch as well as play in the field.

Conversely, I think we've made a mistake by not letting Woodruff and Holder hit.... at least enough to establish that they weren't good enough....

Daryl Norris disagrees. Trying to do both may have hampered his development.

How? He's done neither.

Stephen Head and Brian Pettway agree.

There are plenty of examples of guys who can do it on a high level... I certainly thought Woodruff was one of those guys coming out.

He's done neither.

Huh? We talking about the same Daryl Norris? He's done both and hasn't excelled at either.

Stephen Head and Brian Pettway were two pretty good athletes. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But I don't think Daryl Norris should be playing both, and I don't think Brandon Woodruff should either. I hope that our coaches saw that and figured it out as well.
