If the pg position is taken care of and we be hurt we’ll be top 5. Yesterday was gut reaction from me but I honestly feel like we’ll be good

We're definitely going to be good. How good? I guess we'll find out.

Of our returning guys, the two needed to make the biggest jump are Alex and Jack. It's imperative. If Alex makes shots he's going to play. Same as this year. And it's not as if he didn't play....he did, just didn't make much for shots. Jack was pretty good all year defensively....he's a deceptively quick jumper which led to a lot of blocked shots and he's a good rebounder. He just went dead cold. It messed with his head, too.

But with what we know is coming in and the additions....well, we should be a top 10 team again that will have a chance to play deep into the NCAAT.

Not sure, but I'm willing to wager a few coin that it will have something to do with a foot, be one of our best players, and they will be day to day for an indefinite amount of time
Always holding out hope that we will be injury free, but bad luck tends to follow us

I'll keep this short.

Projected starters

RJ Hampton OR Tre Jones OR Kira Lewis
Boogie Ellis (I just don't think AOC is there)
Wendell Moore
Vernon Carey
Marques Bolden

Likely order off the bench:
Hurt
Javin
AOC
Goldwire
White
Baker

We would have the potential to be quite deep, but I would still expect a short rotation. Hurt and Javin probably get the most minutes with the other guys rotating who plays based on hot hands and matchups. The other wild card is Trendon Watford. If we sign him and Hurt, the front court gets very crowded with Bolden, Jav, Carey, Hurt, and Watford.

It's not as bad as I thought yesterday. I don't think we'll be preseason top 5 with the expectations that accompanied most of our recent classes, but still a top 10-15 team. The lack of expectations on the freshmen next year may be a blessing.

If Baker is that deep on the bench I would expect him to transfer

Yeah, Baker is kind of a forgotten man right now. I'll admit, I even did it in my post above. Some are down on him because of the way this season played out. I still don't understand lifting his redshirt, but what's done is done. The excitement surrounding him would be much higher had he just stayed on as a redshirt. He has a chance to be pretty good starting next season.

If Tre comes back, the offense will run through him. This year he had to get everyone involved. If he comes back, Duke will be very good. He will make a huge leap over the summer and I believe would improve his draft stock a lot if he decides to comes back next year!!

The reason I have Baker so low is that I don't think he has the skillset to play anything but 3. That puts him behind Wendell Moore. Moore will probably get 30 minutes a game and if we get Hurt or Watford there will be no reason for any of those minutes to come at the 4.

I think this is the thing that limits Alex's minutes too. He can really only play one position.

1. Lewis or Hampton/goldwire
2. Aoc/boogie
3. Moore/baker
4. Hurt/white/jrob
5. Carey/jav
Imo tre and Bolden are gone. Tre got to much to risk if he was to come back and his shot is still broke. Bolden has never been featured in our offense and I dont see that changing next year.

Lewis is a transfer, right? So should he choose Duke, he'd have to sit out a year. I can't see the NCAA giving him a waiver because his coach was fired at his previous school. It'd be different if he was an incoming recruit.

They gave tate martell the same wavier and meyer wasnt even fired, justin fields also found a loophole. With Avery getting fired its almost a sure thing he'd get a wavier.

If Cam Johnson was able to by-pass the rule, so can this kid. I know it's a different situation, but Cam was supposed to sit out 2 years and Roy figured out a way to bend the rules, as usual.

It's not even close to the same. Cam was a grad transfer. Grad transfers can play right away. Now, if you have issue with the rule it's one thing....but these aren't comparable situations at all.

Thanks. I didn't realize waivers were being granted that loosely. Seems odd. But, Lewis is a player and it sounds like there's mutual interest there. Will be interesting to see where it goes.

We just need someone that can consistently produce that has some more experience to go along with the young talent. That’s why 2015 worked. That was actually our 4th most talented team of the last 5 years. I doubt we get Tre back but if we can then we’re in good shape. He will work on his offense this summer. This past summer he didn’t really have to focus on scoring. Bring in the Lewis kid to sit next year and he will be ready to go the following year with the next stud class.

Guys, we should know by now that it’s pretty certain we’re gonna get hurt next year. No idea if we will land Matthew or not.

If Jones comes back, Hurt will sign. Made it clear or at least his dad did that his signing will depend on the PG situation.
If Jones doesn’t come back, then Hampton classifies and they likely sign the other forward Watford.
I think K has to go into the transfer market to pick up some quality players, ones that can come of the bench but would be started on some other mid major. Really need some of those types.
They can be good and advance far. They were by far the most talented team but we see where that got them. They need to bench to spell their starters. Without a good bench next year, then maybe the sweet 16.

If we get a couple of these players we’re going after we have a chance to be deep in the front court and backcourt. Something we haven’t had in awhile. Then we would just have to use it and develop it. Please k if it happens use your bench!!

Roy's clever handling of the Cam Johnson transfer ( thru channels of Jon Swofford and working his former Kansas asst, and then Pitt coach Kevin Stallings) led to landing Johnson. Although it was an easier route given Johnson was a Grad Transfer it still established precedent in the conference as far as intraconference hoops transfers.

As far as lineups next year, I guess we're deeper than we thought! Caught this tweet yesterday and it has one GLARING OMISSION:

We have some needs to address and possibly some additional talent to add. The “good” thing is we aren’t going to have 3 top 5 recruits that will lock up 35 minutes per game. There should be completely open competition. Our roster for next year is very fluid but also very promising. One thing is for sure though. We need our veterans to go to work this summer. Ques, Javin, Jack, Alex, JGold all need to live in the gym. The opportunity is there and we need at least a couple of them to take full advantage. I would expect us to address the PG position and possibly add Hurt. Still no one should be crying about not having an opportunity. As good as our incoming recruits can be, they aren’t this year’s freshman. We may not play deep once we get into the season, but right now we are very deep with opportunities for guys to seize minutes, if that makes sense.

Well idk how good he is but he’s a 4* and K’s track record with that would be not play him
I think Boogie is better than some of McD AA's we have had past years.

Elliott Williams (I was wrong on him)
taylor king
lance thomas (he ended up being good defensively, then developed a shot in the nba)
boateng
greg paulus
thompson
dockery
marshall

to name a few. I believe Boogie will have a much more meaningful impact on the team than all of the above. I know paulus played a ton, but he held duke back big big time. Easy for me to say knowing the impact those above had on duke, but duke has had some players that just flat out didn't belong at that level at that time. I really think Boogie will be a baller at duke, might not be year one, but i expect him to be pretty darn good by his soph year. I honestly think AOC will have a tough time beating him out next year.

I heard Coach K prefers green gatorade at all practices and has been forcing it this way for many years. I find this to be lazy and myself question what else he’s asleep at the wheel about.

I read that too. I think recently, perhaps the NCAA sees the BS around coaches being able to up and leave while their players have to sit a year. I don't know.... I just feel like the transfer bug will bite Duke again in the next season or so. A lot of players who would start at 90% of schools who may get tired of riding the pine.

I’ll be surprised if we don’t get one or two before the season

The players who could transfer, may really develop if they got to play more. They could conceivably be really good 4 year players like a Scheyer or Smith. Players that championship teams need. It's the OAD debate I guess. Play 5 star freshmen or develop 4/5 star 3-4 year players.

Develop them and keep an influx of new talent like them and you would be racking up the final fours. It would hurt for maybe a year or two but after that you’re golden
