This thread made me visit the digital archives of The Daily Collegian. I looked through a week of papers from my senior year and saw an ad for a restaurant called “Arthurs” that appeared every day. I don’t recall it at all but they had cheap pasta every night. The address was 214 W. College Ave. The special on Monday night was “Lusty Lasagna” for $2.95.
That sounds like the old Herlocher's Resturant. Lusty Lasagna was a staple at the Train Station, which Herlocher owned and went big with the new Train Station, after which Herlocher's closed.

Just hopped in my way back machine. In no order, I miss the following.

My-O-My (Jack Sapia was a heckuva boss.)
Train Station
Sub/Pinball joint next door (forget the name).
Deli which closed recently. Damn good Texas Chili.
Alley Cat (?) was behind what is now Champs in the alley. Townie Bar.
Post House by bus station. Townie Bar.
NCD - grilled stickies and sausage at 3 in the morning -- yum yum.
Autoport
Meyer's On College Avenue (now Café 210 West)
The Tavern before new owners screwed it up.
The Corner Room before new owners remodeled (their term not mine).
Hi-way Pizza on Garner (also was site of Mario & Luigi Italian Restaurant [downstairs] and Bar Bleu). 15¢ a slice, 20¢ with 2 slices of pepperoni -- great way to end the evening.
Hi-way Pizza in the mall on Westerly Parkway. Had a great Antipasti.
Roy Rogers on East College Avenue. Cheeseburger branded.
The Scorpion on Calder Alley in what was the "ballroom" of the Downtown Elks (Calder Alley & Burrows Street).

No one mentioned Cadillac Alley?! 😆 Had a friend who was dating a girl that worked downstairs (? - upstairs was pool, right?... she started there after they started dating). She was stunning, if memory serves (and that looking beyond what you'd see at the establishment). Pretty smart and funny too. He ended up breaking up with her as he couldn't handle other guys seeing half of what he would see in private. Crazy.

Damn I didn't know The Deli closed. They used to have a really good Reuben.
I also didn't know that Highway on Weserly parkway closed either. Double Damn.
I never thought the Post House a "townie" bar. 🤷‍♂️

Late 70s: The Cattle Car had great subs. The Train Yard was fun on nice spring afternoons. Tippy’s Tacos was short lived but a favorite of me and my friends. And for games, I preferred Campus Casino to Playland. Finally, my first date with my wife was at The Phyrst with the Phyrst Phamly performing — a blast.
The Cattle Car had great subs in the mid 70's as well. At the end of a long evening (and early morning) of drinking, dancing, and frat hopping to see and hear our favorite bands....

Can you remember how much they charged for a sub back then? $1.25 or $1.35 ??? Times have changed. Back then there were lots of places to go for $1 pitchers for MNF, although I believe we usually were at the Gaff....

Long ago, in a far away place, .........

In no order:
Train Station
The Brewery
Post House
Vesuvios
Bubbas
Stage Door Deli
Roy Rodgers
Funny you mention Roy Rodgers. One of our "brothers" worked there and fried the chicken. We didn't have a Sunday evening meal to give the cook an evening off. So a group would go down to Roy Rodgers and order all you can eat chicken and (I can't remember his name) would be breading and frying chicken like crazy.....

From the mid/late 90s, my list would include Beekmans Bagel Deli, Crowbar, LaBamba, SportsCenter, The Deli and Disc Go Round.
Surprised you are the first to mention Crowbar. We loved it there, went to many concerts. Also a big fan of La Bamba. Was Disc Go Round the used CD place on college ave?

Most of the ones mentioned, plus one. Village Inn Pizza, in the mid ‘80’s, it was up on North Atherton before it got all built up (maybe where Champs is now?). One night during the week they had all you can eat for a ridiculously low price. Not great pizza, but it WAS all you can eat. We used to pile in a few carloads and head up there on a regular basis. Probably contributed to them going out of business.
We did something similar at the Silver Screen, the bar at the Days Inn on Pugh St. They used to have an all you can eat wings night, I think it was on Tuesdays, for a ridiculously cheap student friendly price. We brought a decent sized group there nearly every week.

Yep, down by Taco Bell…used to pop in there at least once a week to see what new stuff they had in that week.

Just looked at a map, I think it was where Little Szechuan restaurant is now. I went to that store all the time. I was really into music and acquiring CDs back then, bought a ton of them. We used to go to Mike's Music up at N. Atherton & Vairo at midnight for some new releases too.

this has been a frequent topic over the years on the board.

Onward State posted Part 1 of an article on the subject. I think some of our past threads were better on the subject, but it's an interesting read.

Kildares was the go-to place on Thursday night for my friends and me. It was short-lived and very poorly run, but 1/2 off car bombs rocked.

Yep, looked at that Szechuan place and agree it’s the same…I was also big into music and would often hit those midnight releases, though I’d hit the one on Calder Way.

This one still there but since we're talking about bars in State College I thought I'd mention that it's 2/10 day at Cafe 210. My daughter just called and she and her crowd are heading down. See the link
"Beginning at 2 p.m. and ending at 10 p.m., patrons can order select items for just $2.10.
Any — and we mean any — Cafe tea is up for grabs at that bargain price. You can also order a 16 oz Miller Lite draft or Yuengling as part of the deal.
As for food, skillet fries, buffalo chicken dip, burger baskets, and pulled pork BBQ baskets are available for just $2.10, too."

Anyone else remember that during the mid/late 70s there was a house full of Hare Krishnas up by where all the frat houses are? Every Tuesday night (I think) they put on a free feed for anyone who was able and willing to listen to 15/20 minutes of their peace and love sermon of the week. It was all vegetarian, but the food was good and free, and really hit the spot when cash was short. Must admit I got a tad baked a few times and found my way there.

Thats what turned into Mad Mexx right? Had some fun Arts Fest Fridays at the Silver Screen. Had a nice outdoor sitting area.

It was still going on in the early 80's. I went a couple of times.

Here's a couple ....

Pizza π

And Penn State Sub Shops....
My friend and I spent enough my at Pizza π in our first two years for the owners to retire, so we probably contributed to that place closing, too.

Had a friend who used to work at Penn State Sub Shop on Beaver. She would smell like buffalo wings after a long shift on Friday or Saturday nigh. Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining!

I've never understood the appeal of CC Peppers. I think there were three or four locations when I arrived in 1990, but I always thought their food was subpar. I only ate there a few times when I was a student. My favorite was Bubba's by far, and Boots made a great hoagie as well.

Does anyone remember Ferrara's of Little Italy? It was across from the Pugh Street parking garage, in the basement. Used to be a favorite of a girlfriend and we were disappointed when it went out of business. Found out from a local restaurant owner that they had a long record of health code violations and were always just squeezing under the wire. All I know is that their picatta and fra diavolo was delicious.
