WTF. I used to live at Lexington House (a block or so away); this is a monstrosity! Do they have a bottle shop where you can make your own six pack??
The other end of town has a similar building where the old Arby's was on the corner of College and Atherton. Beaver has a bunch of new high rises as well. Not sure about the six pack shop. I'll be down there next week and report back. 😉

Speaking of six pack shops, there was one on East College that served cheap drafts in the 90's. We'd stop by there on the way to bars/parties to get properly lubricated before a night out.

How about Dank’s Department Store downtown and OW Hout‘s near the edge of town on West College Ave?
OW Houts was demolished many years ago. I want to say around 2010 ish, bought by PSU. I enjoyed that place while it was open.

The parking lot across from Baby's and the GMan(not a Permanti Bros) is a monstrosity of an apartment building. Ugly as ugly can get. The recently demolished the Garden House apartments and the stored where Eddies Bicycles is to build another monstrous apartment building. The corner of W College and Atherton(across from where Arby's way) is another monstrosity of an apartment building. It aint the same small town with mom and pop places everywhere. Chain stores and chain eating joints.

I’m pretty sure it was either here or Tom’s old board where someone posted what the rent is at some of these new places…I was floored. I remember paying $294/month for a 3-person place in Cedarbrook in the late 90s, and that seemed really expensive at the time.

Since establishments is a broad term. I really miss going to Nittany Hot Springs after a late year cold game. I mean likely a Petri dish on any given night but still a great way to warm up.

I know it’s $820/month for Cedarbrook today (per person)

It is funny how tradition is in a college town. People considering the Darkhorse a State College tradition. I worked at the Phyrst for about 8 years. One year Ernie went to Florida and came back with the idea that he wanted a popcorn machine. So he bought one and we made popcorn. About two years later he sold the bar (for the first time) and the new owner threw out the popcorn machine. When people came back that fall they were complaining about how sacrilege it was to get rid of such a deeply imbedded tradition (of two years).

It doesn't take long to leave a mark for a certain group of alums.

Anyone remember the black woman who worked upstairs at the Phyrst when they had two taps and takeout beer. She was normally miserable and bitched at everyone. For some reason, she tolerated us and would smile at us at some point while she yelled at everyone else. Prob late 90’s, early 00’s.

I was there one day when some kid came in with a big black plastic trash bag. He proceeded to dump the salad bar into the bag and casually walk out.

How about Munchies? What a dump.
But you could get breakfast for a buck....

I noticed that Playland was mentioned but not Campus Casino--my brother and I played pinball there one evening on one quarter--and walked away with free games still on the machine.

The movies, state and the garden theaters. All downtown. Wow movies downtown who knew.

I saw jaws and Star Wars at the garden and return of the Jedi at the movies.

the movies had rocky horror for years at midnight. Went to see that my junior year of high school.

this thread is doing the time warp for psu alums!!!

I think I know why it didn’t make it!

SIAP - It’s been a long time since I’ve eaten in State College, so forgive my ignorance, but if YOCD isn’t there anymore, who (if anyone) is making grilled stickies these days?

Damn I didn't know The Deli closed. They used to have a really good Reuben.
I also didn't know that Highway on Weserly parkway closed either. Double Damn.
I never thought the Post House a "townie" bar. 🤷‍♂️
I used to bus tables and wash dishes at the Deli. In addition to pay, you received a sandwich (Reuben or Cheesesteak with SOM for me) a side (French Onion soup), and a drink (Chocolate Malt). The money was awful, but I ate well.

It was at the corner of College and Burrowes. Sports bar inside, with patio seating out front…pool and darts in the basement. Probably opened in about 98, and changed their name to The Soorts Cafe at some point when ESPN raised copyright concerns. They served 23oz beers. Probably spent every NFL Sunday out there for a few years.
Joe Nastasi was a bartender there post-graduation

With Baby's permanently closed, need a new go-to place to bring the kiddos. Kid likes burgers, so maybe BRGR. Or, maybe just start hitting a new place each trip. Thinking of Federal Taphouse this Saturday (before the hockey game) - stopped there a few years ago (the one above Target, right?) the night before a Michigan football game (probably was 2017?) and it seemed pretty cool.

My List:

The Brickhouse
Roy Rogers
Playland
My Fathers Moustache (where I always got my hair cut)
Weis Markets on Beaver Ave
GC Murphy
SeraTec
SeraTec may be gone but BioLife at the corner of Beaver and Atherton is providing that service in downtown State College and CSL Plasma is out on North Atherton next to Giant.

That sounds like the old Herlocher's Resturant. Lusty Lasagna was a staple at the Train Station, which Herlocher owned and went big with the new Train Station, after which Herlocher's closed.
I was a wsiter at Herlochers winter spring and summer of '70
