Is there any team outside of women's soccer that is exceeding expectations or at least I. The top quarter of the league this sports/school year? State sports is about as abysmal as it gets it feels like. Men's basketball is okay but I still feel they aren't very good either. Women's basketball is terrible. Men's baseball right there again this year at being way under where we should be as a program. Women's softball not good either apparently.
Year of state sports that I just as well forget and has made me even more apathetic on top of nil/transfer

Men's basketball about to be a single-digit seed and make the tournament for the 3rd straight year. Our program is nowhere good enough historically to scoff at that.

Women's basketball also about to make the tournament for the second time in 3 years, and with a .500 conference record across those 3 years. That's not "top quarter of the league," but it sure isn't "terrible."

What a 17ing stupid take.

The only sport that anybody cares about that's truly in the dumper is football. And having a HC die is always gonna be hard to overcome quickly.

Both of our basketball teams are likely to make the NCAAs. Is that a common occurrence in our history?? Uh, hell no.

Baseball is likely to make the tourney for the umpteenth time and is back to being at least an on and off Top 25 team (not this week, but it happens).

We had a great season in soccer, two good golf teams and always solid, if not great softball team.

Sorry to be harsh, but don't type stupid **** and you won't get called stupid.

This baseball team will be playing good when it matters (I think). We usually get it figured out at some point.
This basketball team is really good, just in a really really good conference. We also are on the cusp of a pretty good seed in the NCAA, which is above average for our program history.
Football, yeah you're correct.

I don't care about the other sports so....

It’s wild to me that relative to our history in basketball that some consider this team to be performing below expectations. Have 20 wins against a top 15ish SOS. Yeah there have been some duds of games but when has that ever not happened in basketball. It’s a long season and the SEC is absolutely brutal this year. Look at the bottom half of the league. Oklahoma was 13-0 coming into league play against a reasonably tough OOC schedule. SC, Texas, UGA, and OK all have guys projected to go within the top 15 of this years NBA draft. There are few easy wins in conference this year - I can’t remember that ever being the case in my lifetime. I think if you consistently get to the tournament good things will eventually happen.

What a horrible take. Both basketball teams are about to make the tournament and yet they “aren’t very good” and “terrible.”

This is probably the best men’s basketball team we’ve had since the 2004 SEC championship team. This year’s SEC is the best conference in the history of college basketball, and we’ve got a chance to finish in the top six and have a pretty good seed in the NCAA tourney. There’s been a lot of bad takes on this board, but this one may be the worst.

Basketball is fine for both women and men. Football is bad. Baseball was good last year and bad the year before. Too early to tell this season.

Top quarter is top 4. Were we regularly finishing top 4 in sports when there were just 14 teams? Basketball is currently set to earn its second highest seed since 2004.

I get what you’re saying, Trojan. I feel that between football sucking hind teet and the basketball teams having some non-competitive games against not only the top tier teams, but some middle of the pack conference teams, it doesn’t seem good this academic year sports-wise. Despite the highs, the lows seem to negate those highs to me as well. Maybe if we had won one of the UT/AU/Bama/UK/UF games? That’s a lot of great opportunities that were squandered by pathetic showings. Now add in baseball sitting in the dugout with their collective thumbs up their aces, and the perception is exaggerated. I am still reluctantly holding some hope for softball. Zac needs to give us some sort of hope quickly.

To make it worse, the SEC has top teams in almost every sport. Soccer may be the only sport we participate in that it doesn’t have the market cornered.

But, to others’ point, football success would have probably negated a lot of this. Probably! Ours is a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately type world though.

People get in their feels about basketball because they've seen us get blown out by the best teams this year, and they say we have no shot to make a serious run. I've said many times that hope is a very important part of sports.

But logically, we do have a very good basketball team.

Men's basketball is in one of the better stretches in school history and is having its best season of the stretch. That in a year where the SEC is having the best year of any conference in history.

I think the truth is that a bad football team has a way of souring everything.

If we’d watched a 7 or 8 win football team this past season that was a game or two away from being in CFP contention, I honestly think we’d be talking about this being one of the better stretches in State history. A competitive football team, men’s basketball in the top 20, women’s probably making another tournament, and baseball hanging around the top 25.

When football stinks as bad as it does, though, we’re all desperate for something being better than just competitive, and I’m not sure that we have one of those teams this year

Women's basketball is terrible.
That's quite a stretch. They'll 20-10 overall, middle of the pack SEC with a 33 NET ranking.

Women's softball not good either apparently.
Apparently you're just talking out of your ***. They're 18-3 and ranked in the Top 20. They've only missed the postseason twice in the past 12 or so seasons.

Don't get wrong, I love the Dawgs but these women's sports are absolute financial drains on our budget. As long as they're respectable and competitive within our league, that's all we should expect. There is NO reason to be bitching about the state of either the softball or women's basketball programs. They're doing just fine.

We are literally in the top 25 in basketball, baseball, soccer, men and women golf, track and field, and tennis. Our NIL budget and net worth as a program is about 25% of the blue blood schools. I would say we are very successful doing more with less.

But football sucks, so you do you.

You’ve been appropriately called out for your stance on the basketball teams. Both are tournament teams, and while I feel like expectations should be higher than “make the tournament” for our women, it’s certainly not terrible.
Baseball has not been great so far, but at least we don’t have any *bad* losses.
Football is in the crapper, no way around that, and it taints everything.
But going forward, “top quarter of the conference” in any sport is going to be a hell of a year. We’re comfortably bottom quarter in terms of resources. Women’s basketball and baseball are the sports we can have the highest expectations for, but we play in a neighborhood of elite coaches and we’re miles away from having an elite coach in either one of those.

While that is true, I think it's more that expectations for basketball were unreasonably high early in the season, so a pretty dang good season feels like a disappointment.

Football should double its win total. Not many schools can say that.
No we won't. We might win one more game this fall. If anything, the schedule is even tougher this year than it was last year.

Definitely. That performance in the fedex forum against Memphis had me thinking that Jans had himself a well oiled defensive machine that was ready to throw haymakers in the SEC.

This team has still had a solid season, but it’s safe to say that my expectations(or hopes) were probably a little more lofty than they should’ve been after that game

Sorry I don't follow women's sports, but I'm a guy.

Football was and likely still is a dumpster fire. Hope progress is somewhat visible to the untrained eye this fall.

Baseball feels like it's slightly better than a dumpster fire. Maybe we make a regional somewhere.

Basketball feels like we're heading in the right direction, but we still look to be far behind the top teams in the SEC. Looks like we should make the tournament. Hopefully we get hot. REALLY HOT.

It's been this way for nearly three years, some low times to be sure. Basketball is finally at least average in the SEC (and we get excited around her to make it "up" to average). I started supporting another school, since it is where all my money was going since my kid attended there. The different perspective of believing not only that you could win but that you should win was a revelation for me.
