Washington is an up-and-coming young team with some great starters but not a lot off the bench. They lost to Kansas on a neutral court but beat Cleveland State, Oklahoma State, Portland State, and Morgan State at home.

In the Pac-10, they swept USC but lost at Arizona, at UCLA, and were swept by California. They won at Arizona State but just lost to them in the conference tournament.

The note to be taken here is that against teams who have a lot of good shooters, they struggled.

When they're on, Mississippi State can be Cal with the best shot blocker in SEC history in C Jarvis Varnado. The Bulldogs have some different pieces from a year ago, when they took Memphis to the brink. But they still have Varnado, and his defensive ability makes this team very dangerous.

The Bulldogs have several good three-point shooters who can make shots when they take smart shots and work inside-out with Varnado. They have a freshman PG in Dee Bost who takes very good care of the ball for a freshman.

I like what Mississippi State brings to the table, but I don't like them in this matchup. The best way to go at a shot blocker is right through his body, and Huskies F Jon Brockman is basically the DeJuan Blair of the West Coast. They have guards who are athletic enough to defend the Bulldogs and clamp down on the three-pointers.

Even though everything about this matchup screams MSU... he stills picks Washington... It is a shame SEC doesn't have any big men. I mean Varnado has all these blocks on G, he can't post up... Jarvis is just undersized. wah wah wah
How many games has Varnado fouled out of this year? do people not watch UT's big man, he was so scared to shot after V had 5 blocks in 2 half he just started throwing back out didnt' even try to go up with it...

I fully anticipate Brockman to do just what everyone is saying he should do. He will probably come out trying to be very physical on the offensive side of the ball. The challenge will be (a) how are the refs calling the game (b) how does Stans and V game plan for this. Another key, will be how he plays on the D side of things. Lately, we have shown the ability to go at the big guy and draw some fouls. If we can get this guy in foul trouble that should help alot. Also, I think we should try to draw some early charges from them.

What I expect is to see pretty much the same defense we played against Tennessee. We will leave certain people alone on the arc and drop people down into the paint to clog the passing lanes and help D the inside. It seems to be pretty well established that UDub is not a good perimeter team so why not keep that middle nice and nasty and let them jack up quick outside shots? If they are hitting that all goes to hell quickly of course.

Jarvis will camp out in the paint which should severely hurt the dribble penetration of their guards. I seriously don't think UW has seen a shot blocker like Jarvis yet so it should be eye opening for them. Every SEC Team that thought they could take it to him with guards ended up giving up that game plan.

My worries: 1) How will the refs call it? Call it tight and Jarvis could get in foul trouble. 2) Will Brockman be able to push Jarvis around in the lane? Jarvis doesn't have the mass to bang much down low, we saw UT move him around when they put their mind to it. 3) Will we be hitting our threes? If we are hitting from the outside I think we win, if not then it all comes down to defensive effort and some luck. I expect a good game but I'm not expecting a win. Four games in four days followed by a cross country trip takes its toll no matter what our players are saying.
