Still no Tyler Russell talk from Mullen?

• Quarterbacks were, as one might expect, a hot topic. Mullen didn't say anything that changed his previous stance, which basically says Tyson Lee and Chris Relf - and maybe more - will play in the first game.

He did say and maybe more.... Are there any more guys except for Russell who even know how to play the position? This worries me but I would just redshirt him and pull the redshirt once Tyson and Relf get hurt. Is Russell just not showing up or was he over-hyped?

I just think that Russell is young and his age is showing a little. Big difference in high school sports and being a quarterback for an SEC team and I think that is all there is to it.

Don't get me wrong, Russell may very well **** the bed and be worth nothing but I think it is way too early to even form an opinion on him.

This is an absurd question. Why somebody wants to rush to put a tag on a true freshman who plays the most important position on the field is and who has been in full-team practice for less than a month is beyond me.

as a true FR. Very few true FR QBs are ready to play at this level. He'll be a very good QB for us, but not this year.

it would be nice to actually develop- or at least attempt to develop a QB properly for once in our history. Every other school can do it.

He said Relf, Lee and maybe more. Isn't Russell the only one left?

I agree. How many coaches hint at playing more than two quarterbacks in one game?

some thought (or just really hoped) that he was going to come in and be somebody that was going to take the reigns from day 1 and be the man- like Bonedaddy and Afro...

Most of us here were sensible and realized he was going to have to take time and adjust to college football. This is why Jefferson didnt start from Day 1 at LSU. Russell is no better than Jefferson, but may one day be as good. Its extremely rare that a QB can come into the SEC and start as a true Freshman.

Here's the caveat though- Mullen wants a dual-threat QB and Russell is not that person. Mullen is trying like hell to bring in guys that are mobile and not just throwers. If he succeeds in bringing Newton and a couple of others in, Russell may never start a game as the QB of Mississippi State.

I view this a good news because we do not have to play him. I think that we may be very pleased with Relf after actually being coached. Also, I think that Eli redshirted and if he did he did not get the job until his 3rd year. It is really hard to make any conclusions right row.

that even if we do get a true dual-threat QB, he'll still only split time with Russell. I also think that Russell's running ability is very much under-rated. Not that he's a great runner, but he's more than adequate for this offense.

When any fan starts to think a true freshman QB is good enough to start in the SEC. They should be reminded that Peyton Manning did not start or play much at all his few games as a true freshman. It took Todd Helton and another guy (forget his name) getting hurt before Manning played significant minutes.

It afforded Mullen the opportunity to depend on him as a #2 guy and take all the pressure off Russell by not mentioning him very often. I think he's smart enough not to tease the fans and get us all worked up about a QB controversy. He's just bringing him along slowly.

Peyton's first action was against us in 1994. What a great day that was due to the I think fourth down pass to Kendall Watkins. I remember seeing that replayed at Flo and Eddies over and over on ESPN along with the Hail Mary from Cordell Stewart in the Michigan and Colorado game.

Granted he got alot of PT but Leak was the starter and played the bulk of the minutes. Unless Relf steps up and shows something, I think the starting job is Russell's to lose next season. It will be hard to redshirt Russell because of how thin we are if either Relf or Lee gets hurt.

.
I would not read too much into it. He is a freshman and Mullen has been around enough to know that most guys that age are not ready for big time college football. Plus you always run the risk of breaking his spirit if he puts him in the game and he fails. I say it is better to wait and see if the other two players will play good or not and then if so only play him in certain situations where the game is not on the line so there will be no pressure.

Russell is the future of Miss State so let's not waste him.

Brandon Stewart. He transferred to A&M I think.
