Didn't the university course just put a lot of money into practice facilities/clubhouse? What's the deal here?

I'm not knocking old waverly... It's in a different universe compared to the university course... But what's going on here?

I think there were plans, but it was never built. My guess it was easier to get the big donors to put up the money here. Plus, it should help recruiting if the drive doesn't bother them. At lets be honest, its not that far.

As I had it put to me

it's not uncommon at all for a college team to have to dive 20 min. or more to play, or practice golf.

We are spoiled because we have land available.

Sounds like a world class facility.

It was built clintstone. I play golf almost daily at the MSU course and they have tremendously improved the practice facilities. The only reason I can think of them moving to Old Wavely for would be the difficulty of the golf course. Old Waverly is a totally different animal than Msu when it come course difficulty.

I'm sure the overall playability and the brand name (not to mention how much nicer it is) was a big factor in getting doners to fund the addition. Old Waverly is in a different universe. I just wonder if the course with the university's name on it (even though it's officially separate from the University itself) is totally getting the shaft? It seems like they were finally investing some money to make it nicer and the doners wouldn't bite.

I will say that the university course has never lived to it's potential, to me. They constantly have Ground under repair, they are trying to grow trees along the fairways and not cutting the grass (making it frustrating to find your ball), and the grass is just not quite as manicured as it could be. It's a lot nicer than it used to be, but they still have a long way to go.

I've been fortunate to play Waverly a few times. I never found it to be a difficult course IF you can get a feel for the pace of the greens. Don't get me wrong, I'm certainly not knocking the place at all. I've definitely enjoyed my time spent there and it is a very nice course. But I wouldn't call it significantly more difficult than state's course.

However, this announcement may be playing into something bigger at Waverly. I've heard rumors that Waverly will be building an exclusive "championship level" course across the road next to the MSU practice facility.

The University course was a **** hole when I played it Super Bulldog Weekend. Place was in pitiful shape.

There will be an incredible course built across the street from Waverly. Walking only, cobblestone walking paths. Going to make for a pretty unique golfing destination.

I'm no scratch golfer, but I found Old Waveryly much more difficult than MSU.

It is....

Longer, greens have more undulation, more out of bounds and a much more complex design.

Lots of thinking going on at OW. Great track.

The Bryan family is behind it so I assume it will be managed by the same group that calls the shots at OW.

That's a damn shame. That course was in pros teen condition back in the late 90's. Aside from being fairly easy and having greens that would bounce a SW 10 feet in the air it was a great course. I also loved how easy it was to walk. One summer I had to have walked 1000 miles on that course.

In my perspective, it was kind of always a given that every time I went out to play at the State course, it was just going to be in ****** condition. What kills me is that you pay the same price for a god awful ****** course to play on, when I could easily go to a course elsewhere and pay the same green fee but get a course that is in 10x better condition. Or the other way around, pay cheap and play on a ****** golf course. I'm fine with that as well. The city I just moved to has a course that is set up beautifully, similar to Waverley actually. Just absolutely beautiful. But the course itself was as ****** as I've ever played. I payed 20 dollars (literally) for 18 holes. You can barely pay that for 9 holes at State's ****** course. Then you have to deal with the ******* student's that work there that think their **** hasn't stunk in years. Just my 2 cents.

Interesting as the club, in the past, was anything but accommodating to MSU golf. It was a relationship of tolerance than anything more.

The range and swing center will be excellent additions to the program. Hopefully the relationship between club and school has changed in the last few years and MSU is embraced instead of tolerated.

The MSU course would be much closer and more convenient from a logistics perspective. Figure 4.5 miles from campus to MSU golf course. Its over 20mi from campus to Old Waverly. But the quality of the course's conditions just isn't close. MSU's course has a good enough layout to be used by the team, but the conditions just are not up to par(pun!). It would be fantastic if a separate driving range, putting green, practice area, and swing facility could have been built next to the MSU golf course(east of the lake for example) as that could have kept golf close to campus and on campus facilities while still providing the program with a significant upgrade in quality.

But again, the golf course's condition is simply not close to Old Waverly. Some serious improvements in drainage, grasses, and maintenance would be needed to put MSU's course in consideration for being an equal trade to Old
Waverly.

Its good news from a quality of facilities perspective. Its unfortunate news otherwise.
As for other golf programs needing to travel 20mi- that is partly true but mostly not. It completely depends on where the team is located. Also, many programs have multiple locations- so a range/practice facility close and a home course elsewhere. Or multiple home courses.
As close(to me) examples, one that is quite similar to MSU in terms of location etc- Iowa State practices and plays at Veenker Memorial which is basically on campus. The other is U of Iowa- they practice and play at Finkbine which is on campus. Both of these courses have held multiple tournaments for college, prep, and even low level pro.
Both these teams play elsewhere too though at times for practice and competition. Iowa State does play and practice at The Harvester which is an incredible course some 35mi away.

Basically- the MSU course's conditions are just terrible compared to what should be expected and accepted for major D1 golf. If the course's conditions were improved, it would be a fantastic major D1 college course.

ETA- http://www.cyclones.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=541512 this shows ISU's practice facility that is ON CAMPUS. It cost $2million. For the teams use only, there is a fitness area, heated shot bays, multiple putting greens, multiple bunkers, a couple of fairways, multiple teeing areas, and lighting for evening practice.
Again- on campus(at the golf course on campus).

They have already built a driving range and practice facility at state's course. They redesigned holes 10 and 18 to accommodate it.

Wasn't

intending to knock OW at all. I guess what I was trying to point out that sometimes people get remarkably pristine manicured courses(which OW most definitely is) confused with actual degree of difficulty of the course. We'll use the '99 US Women's Open for example. Weren't some of the lowest scoring records for a USWO put up when it was at OW?
