That's laughable. UK has now gone 38 years without a winning season in the SEC, that's going back 24 years before the arrival of Barnhart. During that time the winning percentage in the SEC is .261, and 12 of those 38 years the Cat's won zero or one game in the SEC.

Kentucky's winning percentage in the SEC since 1954 is a mere .291 (129-310-5). That's a period of time more than five times as long as Barnhart has been the AD. There have only been four winning seasons in the SEC in that 62 year span, during which UK has had five athletic directors and eleven head coaches (at least three of which had significant success away from Kentucky: Collier,Curry, and Brooks).

The reasons are debatable, the long tradition of losing itself, the geographical challenge of being situated on the boundary of the SEC and the Big 10, the relative dearth of native HS football talent, and being known as a basketball school, but whatever the reasons, the outcome is obvious. It is very doubtful that Kentucky will ever be anything but a bottom feeder in the toughest football conference in the country. The only way UK is ever going to field a winning football team is to leave the SEC for an easier conference.

And this exactly why you have to give a coach more than three years. The fire Stoops talk is stupid, the man hasn't had time to prove anything. And they are brought to you by the same folks who said Barker would save the day. I guess they think change is the road to success, but that's all UK has done in my lifetime and it hasn't gotten us ****. U.K. Was 5-7 this year, which is far from a train wreck by UK standards. If you really want a winning program there are no quick fixes, there is no up and commer who wants this job, Josh McDaniel wouldn't take it for what Stoops is making.

stoops isn't on any hot seat yet, not at uk. if next year turns out like this year, which i fully expect it to considering the schedule, then he might feel some heat. i've been a fan for a long time and have come to realize years ago that football isn't a high priority at ky and i don't think it ever will be. i wish it weren't so but that is truth. UK is a Basketball school.
You haven't been paying attention to the money that's being poured into the football program . When big money is spent results are expected . I agree with your statement about the past but things changed after the huge SEC tv and bowl game contracts .

Let's not forget Lee Todd's last action as he was leaving was to extend Barneys contract and give him a big fat raise. His buyout would be 2.5 million!
True but that's chicken feed compared to the money we will soon be losing in the football program . If next year goes like I expect , those fancy sky boxes won't be such a hot commodity .

He better hope it does or he may not get a 5th year. Hopefully we keep all of the recruits and signees. Especially those offensive lineman
He may not get a fifth yr , but MB has made sure he never has to work any job again if he chooses not to...that's a tough thing to get fired from...

changed where? certainly not on the field of play. and i have paid attention to the unprecedented money spent on the program, and being a ky fan i sure don't expect overnite change, but i do expect to see some sign of progress. stoops has recruited better than anyone before him but this staff is beginning to look like it may not be up to the task that is the sec.

Stang: I love that UK fans have bought the line of bull from AD "No one wants to coach at UK!" and even repeat it with statements such as "there is no up and commer who wants this job...."

Nonsense! If AD has difficulty filling the FB HC's position, perhaps he shouldn't let the program fall into such disrepair. Besides...making challenging hires is only his vocation....it is his job for which he is richly compensated.

But for a comparative analysis, let's look at other BB-first schools.
-Vanderbilt somehow found a quality coach a few years ago (Franklin)....had a couple 9 win seasons. How did that happen?
-Duke found a competent coach and is winning....even went to their conference championship game.....But, but but who wants to play second fiddle to Coach K!?!?!?! Someone should study this phenomenon.
-UNC?.....they somehow found a coach.....they're going to the ACC championship......might make the CFB playoffs. I thought it was impossible to attract a good coach to a BB-centric school.
-Shoot even Wake Forest found a coach to get them to a BCS bowl game a few years back. Must be magic.

Bottom line....We need to stop making excuses for the AD. UK deserves better and should accept nothing less than an AD who sees it as his job to FIND A COMPETENT COACH......EVEN IF IT IS DIFFICULT!!!!!

But I think the difficulty is overblown. I think the AD is flat-out lazy......HCIW.....Stoops just walked in the door with a plan.....give me a break.

It took Cutcliff 5 yrs to get to a bowl at Duke, where he still finished 6-7. He was 3-9 in his 3rd and 4th year there.

I'm as disappointed as everybody, but calling for Stoops or Barnhart's head is pretty ridiculous at this point. Neither of them are going anywhere.

Stoops deserves the right to fix the problems before he gets canned. He's a new coach still in that feeling out process. He's going to make some regrettable hires and some not so regrettable hires along the way. Stoops deserves the right to make staff, personnel, system and management adjustments in hopes of improving and fixing the problems before he gets the boot. If the problems don't rectify themselves though, then you look at making more drastic coaching changes. Let the off season play out and see if Stoops starts making the right kinds of moves to show the fan base that he's addressing the weaknesses.

They have upgraded facilities , stadium , recruiting room , sky boxes , workout room . The point was , they are spending a lot more money on football so I would think they expect a more competitive team . It is not accurate to say they only care about basketball at Ky. anymore .

I get what your saying and have been disappointed with the coaching choices at Ky. but me and you have watched while the administration just acted like they did not care and seemed to let bad coaching drag on.

even with Brooks we we're screaming for a change at first. but because of his experience he was able to put together a nice run with guys his staff developed in to good players over a 4 to to 5 year process. I do not see Stoops and the staff he has now even knowing how to do that. hell they probably don't know how because they've never done it. Brooks had , and knew how.

I will say with the money being put into to football program today their will be a need and a want for some type of return on the investment. so just maybe this administration will be pushed by the money guys to bring in a top coach kinda like Cal was forced on MB.

the other thing that I noticed is what we pay Stoops. Good Lord As I went down the names of coaches and we're they coached and looked at the salaries I was stunned. Stoops after off the field endorsements probably makes close to 3 million a year. if you look in the Sec that's probably we're he should be compared to the other names. my point is there are good coaches making a lot millions less then Stoops. so it's not necessarily going to UK that's appealing, it's getting in the sec we're the money is a huge difference just because of the conf.

think about it. a up and coming proven leader as a coach can take on that challenge of getting Ky competitive and at worst he gets 4 or 5 years and a guaranteed 12 to 15 million if it just doesn't work out. hell ya a lot of really good coaches would be all over that opportunity to secure his family for 5 years at one place.

today ky is different because the fans are finally speaking out and demanding quality on the field. the admin has put millions into the program and is not done yet. finally a good coach will have the tools to be successful here. Ky is really not the bottom of the barrel in football. we have great passionate fans, new renovated stadium, top of the line work out physicality, great school and atmosphere, great college town for the college experience. UK has a lot to offer good young talent.
the
what we need is exactly what CM said when he hired Mummie. he said I need a RP leading our football team. Well today in 2015 we need a young Cal (a Umass mid 90s Cal) to bring that energy but most of all that Gritty toughness almost cocky arrogant young guy to get in here and give us a personality and face for this program. the owe shucks good guy personality of Stoops in my opinion is not going to be successful here or even in the sec. gotta kind be a arrogant prick. works for Saban.

just want to see a coach with some fire. not a cheater or irrational self centered guy who seems like he is only out for himself. but a fiery coach that if pushed or challenged he will bow up and fight back. then the young men take on that fighters attitude of the coach and we're off. just hate this goody two shoes stuff. sitting a player for a aggressive play, constant confusion and uncertainty from the coaching staff, coaches coming off like jerks in interviews almost talking down to the fans. a lot of it seemed like immaturity from our staff. sorry about the rant but I truly believe we can have a good football team at UK with the right guy heading it up. not a no win like in the past.

Atleast according to this website. Interesting to look at salaries and results
I cannot understand the desire to coach in the sec. For arguments sake, let's say it is the best conference ever.

But 5 of those coaches sec coaches. Vandy's coach has done well at an academic school. Aubrun and LSU and TAMU have been in national championship discussions.

Why would those coaches be on any hotseat?

The money is crazy. no coach in the sec makes less then 2 million. the lowest I seen was 2.4. Saban clearing 7.5. so as a new coach coming to the sec that's a great place to start negotiations lol.

I can't see a school in the sec even being able to have a coach making less then 2 mill. how can you justify not paying him what every other coach is making in the league. hell you could be the worst paid coach in the sec and still be one of the highest paid in the country. some really good young coaches are making half a mill. you do not think they wouldn't jump at the chance to triple that ?

He has lost a significant portion of the fan base and will likely lose a huge chunk of the recruiting class. UK fans don't expect to win every game but they despise getting squashed every year by Vandy, WKU, and UofL teams that are sub par. We needed OT to beat EKU in Stoops third year. But that is still not the biggest problem. The biggest problem is that his teams regress throughout the year as well as throughout the game. He should get at least one more year to prove or disprove the fact he and his coaching staff appear inept and unqualified.
We won't lose a large chunk of the recruiting class. Stoops gets 5 plus years like it or not so either support the team or go away.

I agree . LSU boosters thought they were going to get Jimbo Fisher . Maybe they would have but I can't imagine why he would leave Fla. St. He will make the playoffs practically every year if he can just beat Clemson , which is about like South Carolina most years . I'm sure he would have gotten a raise but he's making more than Les Miles right now . And he gets to live in Fla with tax advantages and a little better weather .

I agree the money is insane. Coach Saban and Coach Harbaugh (Michigan) EACH make more than the entire head coaches of the MAC and Sunbelt.

I guess I can see the point if a coach is in the lower half of the conferences. If a coach can get a solid buyout and longer termed contract, it makes sense.

Coach Stoop is the lowest paid sec coach at $3.25 M. If he were in the AAC to Sunbelt, it would take him at least 5 years at average (AAC) to earn 1 year's salary (uk).

Conference Average Salary Lowest Salary
SEC $4,246,062 $3,250,000
Big Ten $3,052,093 $915,000
Big 12 $3,431,527 $801,169
ACC $2,715,866 $1,302,721
Pac-12 $2,710,278 $2,000,000
AAC $1,426,705 $648,633
Mt. West $853,082 $540,745
C-USA $623,586 $425,000
Sun Belt $537,097 $360,000
MAC $479,974 $390,150

Mark doesn't know how to coach at all. He never talks to the offense just to the refs during timeouts. If he's not pulling in 4 star guys then he should go. He makes Joker look good IMO.

James Franklin - first head coaching gig was Vandy, but I read on here all the time that the SEC is not a place to learn. And don't forget he had talent when he walked in the door. Turned out to be a great hire.

Duke - Cutcliffe was a failed retread of a head coach. He's been a great hire for them. However, we've also tried that route with no success. He also went 4-8,5-7,3-9, 3-9 in his first four seasons at Duke.

UNC- Fedora came in after a 7-6 season and three straight 8-5 seasons prior to that, I'd say that team had talent. It's hard to compare what he's done to what Stoops is tasked to do. And yes, their success has been greater than ours. A lot easier to hire a coach when you've had success recently, wouldn't you think?

Wake Forest - Prior to that 11-3 season you talk about Grobe went 5-7,5-7,4-7 and had never had a winning record in conference.

What resembles our situation best? Duke and Wake (very little success or talent when the coach arrived) and they had to give their new coaches time. But guys would have fired Grobe and Cutcliffe after 3 years.

I do appreciate your post, the facts that you like to omit completely prove my point.
