High school weight room here has speedometers built into the barbells. Is this necessary? I wasn't going to criticize it because I don't know enough but seems like overkill. Basically they want hypertrophy in the offseason then summer and in-season (football, I'm talking) is all based on speed. If your speed drops they won't let you go up in weight.

I'm still not sure what hypertrophy means. Is it strength or bigger muscles? Is it both? What is the right rep range for it?
"Hypertrophy" training is bodybuilding BS. Your muscles will increase in size in response to steady increases in the weight on the bar; If you are getting stronger, your muscles are getting correspondingly larger, it is simple as that. Any coach that focuses on "hypertrophy" is holding their athletes' progress back. Any coach that holds a athlete back due to some arbitrary target on "bar speed" is a complete moron. You have high school kids with raging hormone levels that are ripe for strength increases and the coach wants to focus on pseudo science and adding gadgets to the bar? That is the kind of horseshit that has ruined the whole industry.
You are born with speed, it isn't developed. You want speed on your team then you recruit it.

I was afraid of this. Many parents of kids on the team are paying big for speed training too. I went and watched a few workouts and while they do view heavy weights as good, the form is just so bad. ESPECIALLY the power cleans.

It ain’t too much different than the stuff that tore up my back in the 90s, they just make it look a lot more athletic.

I actually was a little intimidated getting back in the gym. I’d been on the sidelines for 15 years until I got back in because my kid wanted to go. I was thinking that I didn’t know anything about all this new age stuff, folks filming, etc. Turns out it’s largely smoke and mirrors.

Yep, it is a sad state of affairs. My high school coaches taught us to look up at the ceiling on squats, etc. These kids shouldn't be power cleaning until after they have proven they can do deadlifts correctly. They definitely shouldn't be doing power cleans if the coaches can't even coach it, which is all too common. Nothing makes me cringe more than these ignorant hype videos. There is zero reason for any football player to ever attempt a one rep max on any lift. If they are at a point beyond basic linear progression and need a percentage based program than you just use estimated maxes to build a program. One rep maxes will get these kids hurt, especially with some of the horrific form I see on these videos.

That’s the big thing, the 1,000 lb club. So of course the kids are gunning for that. And they also say that we aren’t lifting to be strong, but to avoid injury. Which is not bad but breeds a sense of inherent safety.
