Rick Stansbury has had a difficult year on and off the court. How do you see the basketball program in the future and moving forward?

SS: We’ve had a good week but obviously we’ve had a lot of challenges, too. The important thing is that we’ve got to make sure those challenges aren’t there going forward. Rick and I talk a lot, just like all of our coaches. I’ll sit down with him at the end of the year. We’ll figure out the direction we need to go, what we’re doing and what the coach’s thoughts are with that. I want to hear what Rick has to say there. Rick’s had a lot of success here, you know? Heck, even in a down year we’re finishing second in our division.

Will he be here next season?

SS: We evaluate everything at the end of the year. Rick’s done a lot of good things here. We’ve got to make sure the challenges we had this year are addressed.

About what I expected. A little surprised he dodged the question of if Stans will be back next year, but I think he definitely doesn't want to see any more of the **** we've had to put up with this year.

I like Scott. I want Scott to be successful. But the guys that have the greatest success in athletics are the guys who absolutely refuse to accept second place in anything. In no way shape form or fashion should 2nd in the west count for ****.

Basically- yeah he is going to be back- but some changes are going to be made so that **** doesnt happen anymore. And if we arent going to fire him- then the next best thing you can ask for is that he make some changes.

The fact is, he doesn't think a repeat of this year is acceptable. And I think we all agree with him on that. But as bad as this year was, it says something that a ****** year still gives us a winning SEC record and a probably NIT bid. There's a lot of teams that would love to have the season we had this year.

I don't think Rick should be allowed to make changes. He hasn't made any in 13 years. He's had every opportunity to do something different and has stubbornly refused. Rick should be the one to fall on the sword. Since he's bound and determined to win with this staff and no other, let him keep the status quo next year and can him then, if you don't have the pair to do it this year like you really should do.

This year is a total disappointment, but as a MSU Bulldog we all seem to have gotten use to it. Do I accept it, hell no I don't, we should have won the West and been solidly in the NCAA tourney right now... But what can we do about it, nothing but complain to the our AD.

they would probably all fall out of their chairs with laughter---would go something like---"you are mississippi state---you have zero basketball tradition other than what you had under mccarthy for an 8 or 9 year run in the 50's, and what you have gotten done with Stansbury---odds are very high that you go back to 3 conference wins/year, and .400 overall records--sure am glad I don't have to worry about msu handing our asses to us anymore"----not saying they would be right about their predictions, but I bet they would unanimously feel that Stansbury is way overachieving at msu.

I'm sure they wonder how he keeps his job. There are not many schools in the SEC that will retain a coach with only 2 NCAA's the last 6 seasons and no Sweet 16's in 13 years.

You are hurtin more than just Linda if you think The Recruiter is the only coach that can play a weak schedule and win some games in the weak SEC West. Its this kind of mentality that made us a loser program in the 70's and 80's

Apparently, he's one of the few who can. Lord knows, none of your favorite coaches have been able to even come close to matching his record. And you can't even begin to compare our basketball program today to the 70s and 80s.

Your Hate of Stansbury has reached an all time high.

You honestly believe that there are coaches out there in college basketballwho are dieing to get the MSU job? Im not saying this to be negative but ourbasketball job is in the bottom third of appealing SEC jobs. Stans is our all time winningest coach, how many schools who have fired their all time winningest coach have immediately had success shortly after????

So the attitude that has our program where it is now, which is light-years ahead of where it was in the 70's and 80's, is what will lead back to where we were in the 70's and 80's. That's not even remotely logical.

I would fall out of my chair from surprise ifGrant or Fox or whomever had any damn clue about the details of our program from 30, 40,and 50 years ago.
Mostly because thedistant past has NOTHING AT ALL TO DO WITH THE PRESENT OR THE FUTURE. And what they care about is the here and now and how that will affect the future.

And if they fired him- not much he could really say....I think he should have had made an NCAA by now as well....he's made the program better, but at some point he has to take the next step.

I just want a better basketball coach. Period. Hell, I said way worse things about Crooms (I know I called him a stupid mf'er a few times), but nobody said I hated him- why is that?

And yes, I think there are good coaches out there that want to make 1.3-1.5 million a season to coach basketball in one of the major basketball conferences. That will put them in the top 25% of college basketball in both salary and budget. Especially at a school where people like you think an NIT bid is a good season and the expectations arent very high. Coaches see that The Recruiter didnt make a Sweet 16 in 13 years and kept his job- they would kill for that kind of job security.

People seem to forget all about the year before the Final Four.. Our coach now can't even sniff the second weekend of the NCAA Tourney.......

Seriously, this is ridiculous. In my experience, when a poster starts attributing false statements to others, that's when their argument is falling apart. And this is why so many people simply can't buy so much of the anti-Stans hatred on here. You guys make such HUGE leaps in your proclamations, you usually leave reality somewhere lost in the mix.

You guys say Stans is the worst coach in the league. Not true by a long shot.
You guys say Stans never coaches up players. The list of players that have improved under Stans is huge.
Due to one season of poor rebounding and defense, you guys say Stans teams never play with intensity. Talk about being short-sighted.
You guys say Stans has "never sniffed the 2nd weekend in the dance". Stans teams have been within a couple of baskets at least twice of being there.

It's for these very reasons why this Stans debate is never going to be cut and dry. He has done enough, albeit barely, to keep his job. But he hasn't done enough to shut up the detractors either. And until that tipping point is reached, either by him finally making into the second round, or finally completely losing it (you guys had your dreams it would be this season, but just couldn't quite get there) we'll have to endure this debate every year.

for Stans to look successful when the SEC switches to one division for basketball and we're placing 4-6 each year overall vs 1 or 2 in the west.

Please. The Stans haters on this board just love to make things up about him. We have made the NCAA tournament 6 times in 12 years under Stans. 4 of those years we made it to the second round. Two of our second round losses were by four points or less (4-point loss to Texas in Dallas in 2003, and a 3 point loss to No. 1 seed Memphis in 2008.) Our other loss was a 9-point loss to No. 1 seed Duke in 2005. The final score of that game was inflated due to Duke hitting some late free throws. The game was played evenly throughout. The only blowout loss we had in the second round was to Xavier in 2004. So to say we have never sniffed the second weekend under Stans is an outright lie. Come on people, lets deal in facts here.

when we were so damn close in those games and lost all of them! I'm not a Stans hater at all, but I have to admit the way this season played out has raised my eyebrows a bit.
