Stupid rule... Excessive Celebration

touchdowns where the player drew an excessive celebration penalty before he crossed the goal line. I can understand that if he crosses the goal line and then excessively celebrates, it's a dead ball penalty and the TD counts. But if it's a live ball foul, why wouldn't it be like every other live ball foul and either be penalized from the line of scrimmage or from the point of the infraction?

If, by some chance, they do decide to change the rule to take away the TD, I guarantee the rule will only last one year before it gets shot down, much like a lot of the clock rule changes.

Also, if they treat it as a live ball foul, do they penalize from the end zone backing you up to the 15, or do they penalize from the original line of scrimmage? Reason I ask that is, what happens in a situation like Anthony Johnson's INT return against Bama in 2007 if he had gotten a celebration penalty on the play? Hypothetically, where would you bring the ball back out to?

Or, on Mike Wallace's TD catch right before halftime in the Egg Bowl. It was a 77 yard TD catch with a celebration penalty. Do they bring it out to the 15, or would they penalize us starting from our own 23?

I can see a number of ways where this would be an awful rule idea. When they changed the rule so that you could choose to take the penalty on the try or on the kickoff, I think that is good enough. Having to kick off from the 15 yardline is punishment enough.

They would all get called back for excessive celebration and then they would eventually have to kick a field goal.

Won't get into politics here - just pointing out the root of this stupid proposal. I mean, really. Its the same school of thought as extra punishment when a crime is driven by hate. Maybe next, he'll want double-yardage penalties for rivaly games -since they're all emotional and stuff.

The first thing they tell the players is to get a touchdown, hand the ball back to the ref, then either go to the sidelines or line up for the extra point. There's plenty of time to celebrate after the game.

unfortunate duty to be chair of the committee. The Oregon teams are, generally speaking, smack-talking, dirty-playing, pissy little ********. Granted about 80% of the OU and OSU teams are kids from Southern California, so take that for what it is worth.

I suspect that this rule change is being driven by teams with a history of losing who are tired of watching celebrations. It doesn't seem likely that teams who find the endzone with regularity are concerned about what their players do before or after they arrive there.

Genespage, circa 2001.

Hey, USCreb- do you find it funny that State fans were schmoozing up to Oregon fans, who are much more like Ole Miss fans when compared to Oregon State fans?

I sure did.

We're both Tier 3 schools with reasonably limited research dollars. Oregon is a Tier One institution with world-class research programs across all of there colleges, and Oregon State is a Tier 3 school in the traditional land grant mode.

While we like to brag that we are so much better than than you academically, but there is really very little difference between us. Oregon is clearly a superior academic institution. As a result, there is actually a little less antagonism between the students other than the Civil War.
