Substitutions on a run?

Pike has got to know better
Players don’t get tired or winded on a 10-run…you’re running on air and pure adrenaline…feeling no pain
There was ZERO reason to substitute while you’ve got all the momentum in a huge game…ride it out.

Truth. And fouls had absolutely no factor in the decision which makes it hurt all the more.

As soon as I saw Mulcahy and Omoruyi both going to the bench with us up 10, I started yelling "no no no no no no!" at the screen.

It's been a recurring theme throughout the year that Pike will try to steal some time with oddball lineups in the middle of the 1st half... but those combinations have mostly not been good. Need to do better resting one guy at a time than sticking with one lineup for a long stretch, then subbing 2-3 guys at once.

It wasn't just the substitution, but at one point three subs were on the court at once on a team with little offense to begin with. Head scratcher for sure.

Most infuriating part of the game. I knew Michigan would come back and the Rutgers strategy is always take a million horrible 3's as soon as you get the lead, until the other team ties it. Does Pike not understand subbing in Reiber is handing them 10 points? I have no clue what he's thinking. Turning point of the game and we never recovered. Awful.

I disagree. To think 13-3 which was based on super high energy at the outset was going to just magically continue indefinitely isn’t realistic.
You seem intent on dying on this hill. Could not disagree with you more… runs are an important part of any game and you don’t kill them prematurely with dumb wholesale substitutions. You don’t know how long they’ll last but let them end on their own. Not thru a coaching error.

When Reiber came in I could see Dickinson begin to drool in anticipation. Pike‘s asinine Substitutions of Reiber and Simpson sucked the life out of the team and crowd. What a gift for Michigan which was then losing 13-3. They then went on a 12-0 run. Way to go coach.

Completely agree - all of us couldn't belive we took 3 starters out up 13-3 with the building rocking and a chance to step on the other team's neck and really open up the lead to 15 or more. Love Pike, but this was a bad decision, whereas Pike can't shoot FTs - could've easily gone down to the wire if we hit our normal 73-74%.

Biggest thing was taking Cliff out. Reiber replaced him and was eaten alive by Dickinson. Plus he turned the ball over twice.
Why Pike would trust Dean to cover Dickinson was a head scratcher. Take Cliff out when Dickinson comes out.

Personally, I didnt understand pulling out Cliff 5 minutes into the game with Dickinson still on the floor. This would have the time to matchup Cliff on him whenever hes out there

So what happens if starters are left in game and Michigan claws back to 15-11 then what do all the Monday Morning QBs do?

There is NEVER a good time with this team to use the bench, but it HAS to be done.
Sub like you have to anyway.
I understand criticism aimed at Pike is not received well on this board.

I’d rather that happen with our best lineup out there than to slam on our breaks while we have the run of play, energy and building in tow

Substitutions are a big problem because the bench players are mediocre on defense and offense. The lack of talent was once again exposed in this game. The abysmal first half foul shooting was the reason Rutgers loss momentum which allowed Michigan to control the outcome of the game.Scoring only 45 points in a forty minute gain is unacceptable but not surprising.Scoring has been in a downward trend since the Mag injury.Bottom line a over achieving team has now reached the crossroads and they are heading in the wrong direction .

Who said it was going to magically continue indefinitely?
When it ends you sub.
What constitutes an end?

I agree with you a bit in some situations but I would personally save this kind of path depending subbing for the 2nd half. Also the 13-3 to start the game was built on good play, yes, but also on Michigan missing a bunch of fairly open shots. The 13 points weren't scored that fast.

Coaches get stubborn and stuck in their ways. You can legit pick out the times during the game that Pike plans on subbing. Its not based on flow or momentum, rather, based on time. I am not a fan of that bc it can kill momentum big time and in a game of runs can really hurt you. Also, its not like we are making 1 change here or there, rather, its 3 players coming in at once...very tough

I have been saying over and over all year. Especially in wins. I am very worried how much will be in the tank at the end of the year.

Matt painter and Tom Izzo would have done EXACTLY what Pike did. They put an artificial cap in minutes. You must use the media timeouts to aid with rest. Players have junk strapped to their body optimizing this stuff.

Was Caleb substituted in the middle of all this? Was that a mistake? Only certain substitutions are OK?

Some players have good games is losses and some players have bad games in wins. The same goes for coaches.

Every single loss is not about coaching.
