I think we have had this discussion before and I might have answered it differently then but now, I say Play and lose.

At that point, I don't see that it matters. You're still considered part of a successful organization.

But more than likely, I'd rather be playing, but not for the typical reasons. It'd be because starters make more money than backups, in general.

Would you rather answer a hypothetical question or only think about an actual question?

Put me in the ride the bench and win category.

This hypothetical doesn't accurately sum up what's really going on in the Kaepernick vs Smith....

In Smith's situation, I'd rather play and lose. Smith had the starting job taken from him in an odd way. It was his job and an unfortunate injury opened the door for Kaepernick. SF then proceeds to take the reigns off of the offense and let's CK make many more plays than Smith even got the chance to make.

In Boobie's situation, I'd rather ride the pine and win.

Well this isn't near the level of the SuperBowl but I played in and lost a State Champ in high school. I have nothing to show for it but the occasional replaying what I could have done different to change the outcome. I'm sure some freshmen from the other team who rode the bench and now has a ring doesn't replay what he could have done different to get in the game.

Put me on the ride the bench side. You're still part of the excitement of the whole process and at the end of the day you get the ring. Years later when you're concocting a story to some chick about how you scored the game winning touchdown, she won't figure out you lied until you've already moved on.

Going on the high school state championship. My school won a basketball state championship when i was a junior. I was about the second guy off the bench. Played in the state game and had 4 points. So it wadnt like i was the star, actually closer to the bench warmer, but i am still to this day just as proud as our star player.

So i would say ride the bench and win a super bowl in my opinion.

In HS, we lost to Oxford in the State Championship my JR year. I didn't play much throughout the year but started in game 2. I would've rather sat the bench and had us win the series than play and lose.

while i agree with your reasoning, i totally disagree about your implication that smith just didn't get the chance to make the plays kaepernick did. i think smith is a nice QB who would be an upgrade for about 1/3 of the league, but he's a game manager. he's smart and doesn't turn the ball over, but he doesn't have great speed, he doesn't have a great arm, and he doesn't have "it". kaepernick does. he throws rockets, he runs fast, he has that "it" that makes you watch him whenever he's on, and he's still smart with the ball. he just adds another level to the offense that smith is/was incapable of adding. maybe harbough did restrain the offense a bit under smith, but he's an incredibly smart coach, and i'll trust that in practice and film study, he knows smith's limitations, and he knows kaepernick's potential. smith's injury was just the right reason he needed to make the switch.

Totally agree that CK appears to be the better QB... but I do think Smith had some reigns on him. Smith wasn't running much of the pistol stuff that CK is doing. Smith was in the Meyer/Mullen spread... so he knows how to do that. Is he as good of a runner as CK? No... but he's plenty adequate enough to get the job done (in my opinion).

Smith was some bad special teams plays away from a Super Bowl last year.

I think the results bear out that the right decision was made. Sort of like the decision of a certain JUCO QB from Texas in 2010, as much as we don't like to admit it.

I do think it's very awkward for Smith. He's probably even a little bitter about it. I would be, but he can't be mad at Harbaugh or Kaepernick. Is what it is. Best thing he can do is keep a good attitude about it, and help the team. Nothing helps him by pouting and rooting for the team to lose. He's gone next year anyway.

I lost a State Champ as a starter in HS and also was on the winning team another year while being out with an injury.

I'll win from the bench all day long. Losing just sucks too bad, especially at the championship level.

It's the right decision bc they're in the Super Bowl..

but you can't necessarily say they wouldn't still be there with Smith at QB. They were 2 botched punt returns from going last year

Can't say that we would have surely won the title with Cam Newton either. But you CAN say that Auburn did, just like you CAN say that San Francisco is in the Super Bowl with Kaepernick.

Pretty black and white, IMO.
