Starts today, which sucks! Baseball got no coach, no spring game, it's all kinda pointless. Softball is today and tomorrow early so working folks can't go to the biggest series in a very long time. State can 17 up a wet dream!
Sad, I live in Starkville and assumed it was a few weeks ago.

I know no one will agree with me, but without the spring game SBW is a big whomp whomp. I think Lebby didn't want to have the spring game after the transfer portal closed and so late in the semester.

It used to be my favorite non-Fall weekend of the year. But baseball and football sucking made it easy to miss the past couple years.

The Spring game every year is the biggest whomp whomp of the year regarding football played in the stadium (unless you get beat by Maine or 3-2 by Auburn but I digress, its just another practice and increasingly one where coaches don't want to show anything. I enjoyed them as a kid, but now the refs have quick whistles for most any call, its a bunch of unfamiliar players wearing unfamiliar numbers, and is usually a practice dominated by the defense. Look for them to disappear altogether in coming years.

Wait until he screws up the baseball hire.

I'm just hopeful, at this point, that we just get extremely lucky and the hire turns out to be good. Because I know there won't be any reasonable thought put into it, and he won't have any decent plan or process.

I think you'd be hard pressed to find someone with prior experiences to say the past 5 or 6 SBWs were even good. I've been to many, and I believe the best ones by a large margin were between 85-95. Spring football game, good baseball series (several with Saturday doubleheaders), various festivals downtown, BBQ contests, Saturday night concerts...

It shouldn’t be hard to make a good baseball hire. So I have hope Selmon might not screw it up.

We do have a baseball coach. He might be interim but I submit he will be 10X more well received that they guy he replaced.

Tanya Tucker '85! My Dad and uncles were excited. Delta Dawn was the only song I knew. And then LSU I think that night.

I would just like to know the reasoning behind not trying to coordinate one big weekend in the spring. I know it's work, but it just seems like it would do a lot for recruitment if we had a big weekend where people came because they knew things would be going on and other people would be coming. I can understand why hotels would want to space out the events, but just seem slike a no brainer for the university.

Are we not able to lock in a time on an SEC weekend because of TV or something?

I remember going to one of the SBW BBQs in the 90's and wondering "Am I eating the last place pork in the contest?"
I used to do the SBW BBQ competitions. Guy that won fairly regularly cooked on two giant Weber Kettles. Most interesting setup was a couple of guys cooking whole hog on a grill made out of a Waste Management dumpster. They even had it painted green.

I also competed a few years towards the end. An older man would walk around with a baby pig telling everyone he’s just getting him used to the environment he will compete in next year.

Anyone else remember the late 90s where the university would sell SBW tickets that included Saturdays game, a tshirt and BBQ plate from the contest? They would gather all the meat together from each competitor and serve to the ticket holders. 1 year someone severely undercooked the pork and when it was all mixed in thousands got food poisoning. I remember signing a waiver at the health center in exchange for free treatment. Going forward you had to actually go on your own to each tent to get food.

I missed the food poisoning episode, thank god. after 40 years of cooking I still have a fear of serving someone undercooked chicken or pork. You’ll never eat a piece of meat that I’ve cooked that hasn’t been checked by a good instant read thermometer.

I can’t speak for the older crowd, but SBWs were legendary well into the 2000s for anyone around college age. We’d dang near plan our entire Spring around them, and we had friends all the way from Memphis and OM down to Bama and Southern come to stay with us.

Crawfish boils, volleyball and pool party at college station, Spring game, baseball, Afroman, U.S., and 17th floor… some of the best times of my life

Now we have…. wiener dogs

So why has this weekend been allowed to collapse? Seriously.
Mostly schedule, other option was Easter, and basically the end of spring games. I doubt we see SBW anymore unless they decide to have a big concert at the football field.

So there are only two weekends in the spring? Even if we have no spring game, why can we not have a big weekend like Bulldawg bash?

They could do baseball and a concert. Not sure if softball fell on the same weekend to allow it or not. But let's be honest, we should be hosting concerts in the summer anyway.

Starkville needs people in the summer. Other than some ball tournaments, it's a ghost town for businesses. I don't think you can have a huge concert with school in, but some in the Hump would be nice or at The Dude. I loved the Hardy concert there.

I live in Starkville. If the Weiner Race wasn’t this weekend, I don’t think I’d know that SBW was even this weekend.

You could do one in the summer as well, but the university should have a big party weekend each semester. Make it so extravagant it’s called “Super Weekend” or something similar

I don't get it either, brother. Forgetting about wins and losses for a minute, there is absolutely zero juice surrounding MSU athletics right now, and I don't get why we continue to kill what little excitement prior administrations were able to drum up.

If Selmon were to post an online poll right now with one simple question, "Are you excited about State athletics?", the approval rating might be < 20%

I still remember back in '96 walking through the SBW BBQ cookoff area and a couple of the competitors were just handing out their food to us po', starvin', college students. One guy gave us a full bacon-wrapped pork loin he cooked (bless you, kind sir). I always loved the full event with the spring game, BBQ cookoff, baseball, etc. It was OUR event.

SBW used to always fall on our anniversary the first weekend of April. It did that for years and we never missed it. Then for some unexplained reason they always had it on Easter weekend and that was often a Th, Fr, Sat series. I think that killed it as much as anything.
