OT; I want to thank Jackson's city leaders(?) for all their efforts to keep Southwest Airlines in Jackdon . •••

Pathetic

Not one bit of fight has been put up since this was announced. Some members of the Jackson City council are too busy attending "stop the violence" rallies to even care.

meanwhile, they have changed the mayor's name on the sign at the entrance to the airport. I guess that is more important than keeping Southwest.

Jackson City Council members don't have any pull when it comes to dealing with a company as big as Southwest. I'm highly disappointed with our state leaders for not stepping up to the plate here. We know who they are.

I've flown both Southwest and United several times in the last month to and from Houston. The service on Southwest has honestly gotten so bad that I don't care. I flew United twice and it was much better. Every Southwest flight was late. United was on time every time

City leadership is powerless in this. When SW first wanted to do this several years back, the congressional delegation stopped it, with Cochran playing a huge role.

If you people think there hasn't been a fight to keep Southwest, you're crazy. There has been. Not just at the local level, but at the state level as well. But it was a fight we had no chance of winning. Southwest has been wanting to pull out for years.

Haley, Thad, Wicker, Pickering and maybe Harper (can't remember if he had taken over for Chip by then) were very active in keeping SW in place for as long as we had them. Dirk is one of the best execs in the industry. I hate we are losing SW, but hopefully another carrier or two will step up.

Frontier most likely. Jackson has had flights to Denver before that lasted about 3 years. Frontier is a true low fare carrier like Southwest used to be. I like Frontier.

Southwest really wasn't any cheaper than any of the other airlines the last several years. I hate to see them leave, but the Southwest of today is not the same airline it used to be.

Biggest concern is what United flights will cost to Houston once the Southwest competition effect wears off. I doubt they jack the price up massively immediately, but over time I think you will see higher fares on that route.

What sucks the most is Jackson loses service to Hobby airport, (which Southwest owns) and it's near downtown and M.D. Anderson medical center. Now United will be the only airline to fly from Jackson to Houston, with no possibility of any future competition.

Random question: why did southwest want to leave Jackson? Not enough business there?

With the merger with AirTran they have starting some shifting of services.

They have left some cities and added some as well.

Nah. I'm AList Preffered on SW and have status on several other airlines. SW is the usually reliable over a long enough sample.

If an airline is running late, there's usually an airport to blame.

I bet the prices do go way, way up once SW is gone. If you look at what happened on the Houston to Memphis direct flights, that should tell you what to expect. When United was the onky Houston to Memohis, tickets were roughly $500 round trip. Once SW became active, the prices are about half that now.

It depends on where you're flying out of and to where.

I flew to San Antonio from Memphis back in January and it was way cheaper than the other airlines, plus our plans got changed and we were able to change our flights for free which was nice. But then in February I flew to DC from Memphis and Delta was a much better value and we had a direct flight.

The problem with Southwest is the scheduling. It's so oddball because they push so many planes out of just a few gates in their non hub cities. It's how they save money but it creates weird layovers and times.

Southwests business in Memphis has already had an effect on the other airline prices. Delta/northwest has always been outrageous and for years Memphis International had some of the highest prices in the country. It also helps Frontier is here now too.

Jackson is the only true Southwest market that has been closed. Branson, and Key West were Airtran markets that Southwest took over during the merger process. They were not original "Southwest" cities. Beaumont, TX is the only market that Southwest has vacated in their 43 year history in which they never returned. Jackson will most likely be the second. They left Denver (Stapleton) before the new Denver airport opened, and San Francisco (SFO), but returned to both markets years later.

I hate to hear that. Now my favorite direct connect from Austin through Houston is gone and I hate Delta. Gotta fly to Atlanta to get to Mississippi?

You can fly United through Houston Intercontinental to get from Jackson to Austin, or American through DFW. Don't have to go through Atlanta.

It was certainly cheaper and more available for me in Houston. 50 minute flight from Houston to Jackson $89 21 days in advance.

Shutting down the ATL AirTran hub is problematic as well. Delta is gouging that route. The direct business routes are > $600. Get within a week or two and they are > $800. All to fly 330 miles. Unreal. Somebody has to come along and pick up that route to give Delta some competition.

If I recall correctly, it wasn't so much the lack of business in Jackson but that they have a limited number of gates at other airports and didn't want to dedicate gate time to flights to and from Jackson. Just other more lucrative markets they want to serve with their limited gate time, even if being in the Jackson market was reasonably profitable itself.
