Largest gamble I take nowadays is going to sleep with the expectation of waking up again. I lost enough in my younger days to eliminate any "thrill" gambling provides.

The only gambling related thing I do anymore is playing fantasy football. I used to play poker in casinos a fair bit but COVID killed all the poker rooms for long enough that I lost interest in it. Haven't stepped foot in a casino in probably 5 years and have no desire to.

I'm the guy who always wanted to play poker with poker chips in college and have no real money on the table (that rarely earned me any friends). I hate losing more than I like winning, so I never gamble. I get no joy from it.

I'm not wired for gambling, fortunately. The low of losing hurts way more than the high I get from winning. I'm pissed if I lose 100. I'm whatever if I win 10x that.

Occasional casino trip is fun if you view it as entertainment only and assume you are going to lose while getting "free" drinks, people watching, and all that.

When I was here in college I had a roommate for one year that bet every night on whichever sport was in season. I watched him totally living out of control. He would bet the early games and lose, so on the late games he'd double down to try and make it back. If he won on the early games he'd bet all that on the late games. On a lot of occasions he'd lose on early and late games. Some days he'd win, huge amounts, and he would live large, until he was broke again. Before the year was up he had sold or pawned everything he had in our house i.e. stereo, tv, golf clubs, school books, everything but his car and clothes to pay off debts to the bookie. Eventually he'd go home on weekends and bring back things from home to sell or pawn. He took a bunch of power tools from their house and when his mom called him about it he denied knowing anything about it and they reported a burglary to the cops. The bookie had guys coming to our house looking for him so he started living w/ his girlfriend and dropped out of school. I had to unplug the phone in my own house because the damn bookie and the bookies boss were calling daily and started threatening me to give him up. I told them he'd moved back home (out of state) which was kind of right and that I was pissed because of them I wasn't getting any rent money from him and to leave me the hell alone because I didn't want to have to tell anybody about where I had taken my old roommate to pay for his debts or pick up his winnings. They finally left me alone but asked that I let them know if I heard from him. I saw the old roomie last season at a home football game here at an alumni gathering but didn't talk to him and I haven't seen or heard from him otherwise since 1984.

Needless to say, I was heavily influenced by all that and don't and haven't bet on anything. I'll go to a casino to see a show or eat a decent meal but otherwise they have no appeal to me.

I do Fantasy Football. My main league is with my family and there is no money on the line. Just a tremendous trophy. I do the College Pickem' and I am not putting any money on the line. I have been doing the PGA SPS golf pools and do put in money. I never gambled on the golf course. That's pretty much it.

I only gamble when I'm in Las Vegas which is maybe once or twice a year for work. I take a set amount of cash and play blackjack. If I lose it then I leave.

I don't gamble on sports anymore... I already have enough to piss me off in day to day life without watching sports with money on the line.

Any major success stories? Or major regrets? I regret not gambling on Bitcoin back in 2011 or so when I first heard of the absurd gamble. If it had been easy and to purchase and sell then, I would have...but then likely would have sold it in like 2015...which would have just changed my major regret to regretting that I sold way too soon.

I have just begun to dabble in sports betting. I’m using ai to handicap games and find value. I’m not claiming to have found something successful but I am 30-15 over the last 7 days.

I know it is going to sound silly but there’s a site where you can essentially learn to gamble for free. It’s called sportsplays.com and it gives you a tiny bankroll to begin of 1.50.

I am required to have homeowners insurance because I have a mortgage.
I am required to have car insurance because I have a state tagged car.

Neither example is gambling, it is following the rules.


As for life insurance, that also isnt gambling.
I am not betting I will die before my insurer thinks I will die. I am ensuring there will be money for my family to live comfortably if I die before my kids are grown and fully on their own.

Insurance is paying an agreed-upon sum (premium) to a third party (insurance entity) to assume a financial risk that you are unwilling to assume. I guess it is "gambling" in the sense that, without insurance, one is at financial risk of loss. Not much upside to a bad gamble, if you ask me.

I gambled significantly while in college which was insane because I was broke and paying my own way through school. I will say that I won the majority of the time, I thought it was that was because I was consumed with sports and followed it heavily, so I knew who to bet on. Ignorance was bliss, as I've gotten older I've come to realize that I was just extremely lucky, that no matter how well you know a team or a matchup, strange things are a possible outcome. I'll give an example, I believe it was a Monday Night matchup between the Packers and the Chargers, in those days both just lit up the scoreboard and neither played defense so I bet the over, Well I had a Monday night class and my roommate misunderstood me and bet the under for me. I had bet money I didn't have and was like oh ****, but an un-forecast snow storm rolled through Green Bay that night and saved my tail. 40 some odd years later I still remember that like yesterday and has changed my outlook on gambling. No longer gamble.

I like to go to a casino once in a while (like every 3 or 4 years) but the only thing I know how to do is the slot machines. They never pay off, so it's just very occasional entertainment.

I play Hold ‘Em. I’ve made money in in person cash games, lost on in person tournaments, and lost online (this is recent and only micro stakes).

I once sat down at a table with a bunch of people I’d never played with before. I had $500 playing 1/3 NL. Second hand I got pocket Aces while still setting my chips up. Two other guys with deep-ish stacks are playing, and it came to me after a 3-bet and a 4-bet. Long story short… I got them all in by the flop and won a $1000 pot right away. Played another 3 hours and walked away with $1900. One of the guys I was playing against everyone knew and kept calling Adam. After I left, I realized it was Adam Morrison, the Gonzaga player. He had short hair and no mustache, and he was one of the guys I'd gotten all in.

I've never done sports, but I may start doing $5 parlays just to make some of the college games more interesting to me. I don't care enough about some of them, and I want to be invested in them all day

Same. I have more than enough other bad habits already. I can see how anyone with an inclination to gamble is truly 17'd now that you can legally bet on most anything, anytime, from your phone.

I was in LV on a work trip a couple years ago and bet $100 on the Cowboys and watched the game from the front row of the Circa sportsbook, with the 3-story screen. Front row was walk-up free seating. I was by myself so it wasn't too hard to get a single seat. It was a fun event and I really enjoyed it - especially since I won the bet. It paid most of what I spent on beer watching the game.

I won a quarter of the pot on one of those Super Bowl score-by-quarters boards one time.

That's about it for me gambling though.

I'd argue that not buying insurance is gambling. Buying it makes your financial future less volatile.
