At least Cal seems to now be after guys who can shoot the ball.
Mind blowing that it took so long to realize the ball going in the basket is ultimately the entire concept of the game. Everything else is built around that. I.e stop the other guy from scoring, handle the ball or pass the ball to get in better position to score, rebound the ball to gain more possessions to score, etc

That's why the team with the most points wins. Not the team with the most rebounds or blocks or assist or steals or most "total stats" in an "overall" kenpom style stat or sum of all categories.

But you also have to stop the other team from scoring and that’s a tough combo to find, an elite three point shooter and defender

You only have to stop the other team from scoring...as much as you score. Again, since the determining factor of winning is scoring more points, defense is simply a supporting dynamic to scoring more points than the other team. Thus, being more efficient on offense allows more room for error.

And yes, if you're strictly looking for elite 3 pt shooters then sometimes it is tough to find solid perimeter defenders as well (although that is exactly what Baylor currently has). But I was just referencing scoring and shooting in general. Plethora of ways to put the ball in the whole but you need guys who can create and put their selves or their teammates in positions to score. Over emphasis on length and athleticism to bolster shot blocking or defense at the cost of guys who are efficient on the offensive end is how you get the rock fight style and constantly in close games. It can work but offensive efficiency makes everything else easier.

Sidebar: I'd argue our over emphasis on shot blockers and blocking shots from the help defender gives up just as many weak side wide open put-backs or second attempts even if we "lead the nation in blocked shots". If the on ball guy can challenge block it then great but I'd rather everyone else block out and secure the miss. Help D should just be for if you're sliding over bc the other man is beat, not to have 2 (sometimes 3) guys all challenging the same shot like we do on a consistent basis.

I think the reason we give up so many easy buckets because of help defense is because we have been getting beaten off the dribble so badly. It’s one thing to use a help defender to take away an angle and another thing to have him be the only thing between a guard and a wide open layup.

I think out of everyone mentioned the last few days he may be most likely. He's close with Lucas. I watched him a few weeks back against Montverde and he looked better than anybody on the court. Lead in scoring with 17 and 3/6 from 3.

Ok so Jai was the lead recruiter for him. That’s a good sign. He’s from KC too somewhat close to me. I’m sure Counzo will be in his ear.

I like the breakdown about his game.
I can live with Cuonzo being in his ear but we're in trouble if Cuonzo ends up in his wallet.

Ain't that right, Jaylen?

I checked this out yesterday. I was trying to find out if Jai was his recruiter.

A talented shooter, Bates averaged 22.1 points and 5.0 rebounds per game during his junior season. Bates had developed a good relationship with UT assistant Jai Lucas, who is expected to leave his position for Kentucky. Neither UT nor Kentucky have made the announcement official, though.

Still, Bates said he wanted to play “for a Black head coach with everything that is going on.”

“It was very important and I feel like I can help get something started.,” Bates said. “It was important to me to show that I am actually going to do it. I feel like Black coaches don’t get the same opportunities to get good players at their schools. I want to go and start something at Texas and bring back the winning tradition.”

He's ranked 61 on 247. He was going to be a 3-4 year guy at Texas. Will be awesome to see him come here and develop over the next 3-4 years.
You just jinxed it lol he will be a lottery pick now if he comes here hahaha

I don't think we are in the running...

Statement is about 8 months old so not sure if he still feels this way.

That’s why Cal hired Bruiser! He thought of this months before it happened! Cal’s playing chess while we’re playing checkers.

If Bates ultimate goal is 2 make a difference about equality then he should get to know Grady who is already campaigning for change and has created an organization to do that
